  1. Hi Guys, Anybody here knows what the Chennai RTO slabs are for fancy numbers (or do you have link to any online chart of the TN transport dept) as i could only find a govt chart for the MH transport dept. The MH chart clearly states what type of numbers and lists the actual numbers with a general slab rate for that group of numbers. The slabs start at 5k and go right upto 1 lakh etc. Unable to find a chart like that on the TN state govt site. Tried calling the RTO and speaking but they only said its a % of the vehicle value (which is true) and you can pay that and pick ANY number ! Im sure the person who answered has missed out something since i know a single number 9 and a 9009 has a difference in cost or in this case the percentage might be different dpending on which slab type (such as single number '9' '7', palindromic mirror numbers '9009' '1001' etc). Can anyone shed some light on the slabs ? Thanks
  2. What !!!!! No edit button to even edit my spelling errors a minute after posting ???
  3. Just 18 months down the line and my nano battery is dead beyond revival. Im having a nightmare with this car. Compared to my Zen and My EECO. Will soon be giving a 2 yrs of ownership review of the car. I called the service center and they either dont want to tell or dont know whether i can put in an AMARON battery. The Amaron helpline confirms i can put in a 35AH 12v battery. But the problem here is that the battery that comes with the car (that is the one that's now dead) is a 25AH battery from exide. So can i use a 35AH battery from amaron ? Has anyone used such a battery in the Nano. Some say it can be used with no problems. Some say you cant. Can any of you comment ?
  4. Nano - Battery Replacement. Can i install a 35AH Batt ?

I will use the above refilling procedure at least next time onwards.
  5. Nano - Battery Replacement. Can i install a 35AH Batt ?

Thank you for taking the time to explain. This will definitely be of use. But i think is an intricate and cumbersome job though. But i read this just after i bought the new battery. Fixed the 35ah amaron battery. Wtih extreme diufficulty. The battery guy gave up and said he cannot fix the clamp back. Its true as its really in a craped place stuck under 2 solid iron bars and its like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. So had to start it with the new battery but lose rods and went to NANO authorised service station. Took the engineer 1 Hr solid to figure out how to put it in. That too cramping himself between the seats lying half outside the vehicle and half inside. This is the position the battery has been placed in the 'wonderful' vehicle. He himself agreed that its near impossible to put the battery back. And sweat pouring in the sweltering heat, he was trying and trying and then finally another service guy had to go in and do it. And throughout they were asking me "where did u change the battery" again n again. As if we damaged it or what. Its in brand new condition and its obvious its been design by a foolish company. And its like as if i dont have the right to change my own battery or what ? My advise is dont buy a Nano. Most people giving good reviews about a nano are first time car users and are highly kicked up about the vehicle and feels it great, because theyve probably not used a well designed car. Using an eeco and zen and the nano makes you want to ram it into the wall.
  6. Nano - Battery Replacement. Can i install a 35AH Batt ?

Its out of warranty. 18 months right. The Nano orginal battery has only a measly 1 year warranty on it. So they are offering just 300-400 bucks adjustment on take back.
  7. Nano - Battery Replacement. Can i install a 35AH Batt ?

Only issue i can say is that i sometimes leave the car for a week or 10 days. Since im using the EECO then. Cant help it because i have to juggle and use to give both some exercise. To further explain what happened, the battery went flat recently after not using the car for just 7 days. So i called a local exide shop and asked him to recharge it and also check water levels. When he brought back the battery. There was water (or something like water) oozing down it onto a newspaper that we kept the battery on. So when i looked closer, the battery was sweating (for lack of a better word), and i wiped it and mounted it into the car. After mounting it in i tried starting and the entire dashboard was flickering like a strobe light with a very audible high speed KRRRRRR electrical kind of noise (not mechanical) which was matching the console panel flickering. And the speedometer was rattling away against its resting pin while the car was in neutral and stationary. And the the engine would chug and chug and then start. Took it to the nano service center and he didnt know anything and was blank. He checked it with a multimeter and said its delivering the correct voltage but yet behaving like this and he doesnt know why. He will have to keep the car for a day or 2 to research and find out. Which i dread !!!. They will ruin and break the vehicle and give it to me (based on past experience, more details in my upcoming nano review). On a sidenote, nowadays car dealers greatly help make your vehicle get the USED or OLD look. They cant stand customers who have the car without a single hairline scratch and in brand new condition. The car came back from first service looking like a grisly bear lived in it for 2 days. Complete dashboard scratched and abrased. Perfectionists like me will die of heart bleed. Is it possible he poured tap water into the battery given the train of events ? If yes is it possible to revive the battery or better to change it to be on the safe side ?
  8. Hi, Have any of you asked to see your cars oil change being done ? Some service stations dont drain the oil fully etc and ive had friends experience things like this. With all the awareness of consumer rights doing the rounds, i guess how they still refuse to let you see them working on YOUR car. Do share your thoughts. Thanks
  9. Hi Hersch, I just spoke to them at Concorde Motors, Chennai Ambattur and they declined to have me inspect the vehicle, even from a distance. Thats a little shady. I wonder why ? Then he was trying to tell me he will try and get special permission etc but still feels they wont allow it.
  10. Hi Guys, Ive been an avid user of maruti cars for the past 20 years. Owed 6 Zens and now, a Zen, an Eeco and a Nano. I have never bought a 2nd hand car before and lack experience in that avenue. Im planning to buy a used Ford Icon, Flair, 2004 Model, Driven 46,000 Kms. I inspected the vehicle and the body seems decent and newish. Its still got the orginal factory paint. But for small parking scratches etc on the bumpers theres nothing i can see obviously wrong with the body. I have no experience with Fords and want to ask all of you of if this is a reasonable buy at the final negotiated price of Rs.1 lac. The vehicle seemed ok to drive. Smooth engine. One touch start. But i could only drive it at 10kmph inside an apartment because of heavy traffic on the outside unsuitable for a test drive. The brake pedal was extremely hard. I mean it wouldnt depress and had a wooden grip feel which makes it feel as if your driving without any brake drums. Theres no grip. It just slides and then slows down without a firm immediate response. The owner says its just a problem with the brake oil flow and he will get this fixed before delivery if im taking the car. I also asked local prominent brand service station if they will do a bumper to bumper check on the vehicle before i buy it and they agreed. Now this vehicle will primarily be used by my wife who is a first time driver and has just learned to drive. We were on the lookout for a car within a lac for her as a first time car since our cars are all brand new. What are your opinions on this scenario ? Your suggestions would help me a lot in my decision. Thanks
  11. Sorry but i have to add, i also found an impeccable condition 2002 lancer. Its been maintained by a guy that loves cars obviously since i had a chat with him. Hes quoted about 1.75 lacs. Its black and the body is perfect. The boot looks clean and well maintained too. Single owner. brand new battery etc etc.
  12. We found a 2005 model M800 which was in OK condition. The front bumper etc isnt perfectly aligned etc. But then im a perfectionist and have maintained my vehicles with immense difficulty. I remember replacing bumpers and doors to brand new ones because the original got a small dent in it and i didnt wanta tinkered door. My 10 year old zen looks just like it rolled out of the showroom till date. So maybe i cannot be appeased easily. He's asking for 1.15 lac for the car. But might come down to about 1.05. Would it be ok to buy ? Its not a 5 speed car. This is the 4 speed version. We could hardly find a good Wagon R of 2005 or later within 1.3 lacs etc. Also the other honda city cars etc were qouted much more than what some of our friends here have mentioned. But maybe they pitch high to start with. But the honda city is a large car and my wife might definitely meet with some small scratches or maybe worse and replacements would cost much more than a maruti, so thats one thing to keep in mind. Also i have another doubt. Many of the cars are all with open TO papers. Meaning the seller has got the TO signed by the previous owner and has been happily using it without implementing the name transfer for god know how long and its hard to tell transpired during that tenure. And i found this to be the case with 7 out of 10 cars. Any opinions on this please ? Thanks
  13. Sorry to go off topic but may i know where the edit button is, if i want to correct a post that ive just submitted a moment back ? Seems elusive or is it non existant ?
  14. Hi, Yes a lot of folks are recommending the hyundai accent also as a relatively trouble free car. We are in Chennai city. Regards
  15. Hi Guys, Thanks for all your feedback. I think i will dump the Ford Ikon idea. From the beginning i was tuned to a maruti. There are some pretty good conditioned Maruti 800s etc. What do you feel about an 800/Santro to just learn driving for a ladyand then give away ? Would those also be good options ? If its a Maruti 800/Wagon R/Alto etc, how old a car is ok to take ? upto 2000 model is a safe bet ? What about Hyundai Accent, how far back a model is safe to go for ? Upto 2000 again ? Thanks
  16. I wonder why theres not even an edit button available to correct typos and other errors ? Kindly pardon my typographical/grammatical errors if any. I just wanted to add that this is the Petrol version and that we are buying this because the other cars at home are impeccable in every sense of the word and we wouldnt want to see them scratched etc. Also are ford icons very troublesome and do they cost too much to maintain or for parts replacement ?
  17. Hello Guys, I just bought a Nano CX - BS4 in addition to the Zen and Eeco which i already have. I bought it just for the fuel efficiency touted. My first tank full to tank full test shows 20kmpl. With mixed city and highway driving of equal proportions. Always driven only with Ac on. I will be doing a detailed feedback/review of the car shortly. As of now my main question is : On the front windshield theres a sticker mentioning a running in period which says for the first 1000kms or so to keep within these speed limits..... "Gear 1 - max 10 kmph. Gear 2 - max 25 kmph, Gear 3 - max 40 kmph and Gear 4 - max 60 kmph". I have kept within these limits for the last 300kms of driving. Now i need to take this car on a long drive of 1200kms total. WIll there be an issue if i drive it on the highway at slightly 60+ ? Like say about 65-70kmph max ? Will even this slight deviation ruin the engine or its fuel efficiency in some way ? Please do let me know asap. Thank You.
  18. My New Nano, small question regarding the running in period.

I used normal unleaded petrol for more than half the journey because of non-availability of speed petrol. WOuld this have also had a toll on the FE drop for the second half of the journey ?
  19. My New Nano, small question regarding the running in period.

Dr.Nishu, Yes the jump from powerful cars to this might be the reason. The clutch ratio to which im used to is very subtle. I will be doing an indepth ownership review of the new car since ive driven it for 1800 kms now.
  20. My New Nano, small question regarding the running in period.

Hello Dr.Nishu, I think only my city mileage is bad. Been driving for a very long time. I have never ever revved a vehicle at all. And nobody knows when i change gears due to the fluidity in shifting gears. I always punch the ac compressor button off when standing at signals or moving. Only after i change back to 5th gear in my zen etc do i push the button back on. Also when its chilly enuf i push off the button till needed again. Ive never ever driven my cars without ac though. I just like maintaining my vehicles in immaculate condition and cant stand dust and polutants harming the vehicle and my lungs probably. Only recently ive made it a habit to atleast once a month wind down the window glasses and then immediately back up again since they get stuck and never open when it goes for service . All three cars if you try opening the window, ull find them stuck hard due to never being put into service. Keeps the interior of the car newer and clean. And i touch very softly on the accelerator. My heart will bleed if i hear the engine revving. This is why the nano, being 2 cylinder and beaty in engine switches off often for me since i very softly accelerate and release clutch. Im known for very gentle take offs . But i think the nano in first gear needs a tad bit of revving to start off. I immediately shift into 2nd when the vehicle has just moved.
  21. My New Nano, small question regarding the running in period.

Hi Librankur, I bit the bullet and made the trip. I got a FE of 27 kmpl upjourney and 23.5 kmpl returning to Chennai. It was just me + 1 passenger + baggage with the rear seat folded down. Though it was pretty boring considering i always used to touch 80-90 but never more in my Zen. My Eeco hasnt run much at all, just 1800 km on the odo and its going to be 2 years old though its in brand new showroom condition. I did keep within 60-70 kmpl green bandwidth of the speedometer for the up journey and half the return trip. During half the rturn trip i had crossed the 1200 km mark so i occasionally touched 80 but not continuously. I guess that explains why i got lesser FE. Ride quality is ok given the price of the vehicle. You get what you pay for. Seats are stiff and not too suited for long drives. You need to stop and stretch at least once every 100 km. One huge problem i faced was getting speed petrol. Speed isnt available at any of the bunks after Trichy. So i had no other go but to use normal unleaded petrol for the uphill climb and thereafter till i returned to Chennai. Over the past 20 years ive only used speed since it was released and prior to that, only unleaded. Always opted for the best option. I dont know if this figures in my bad FE. But people say that because the Nano is a 2 cylinder engine it doesnt matter if its normal unleaded or speed fuel. Is this true. It has no bearing on FE and engine life and smoothness of the engine ? Plz let me know and i will stick to normal petrol. Totally the Nano consumed about 61 ltrs of petrol for a trip of 1392 km (600 kms Chennai > Munnar, 192 kms of sightseeing within Munnar, 600 kms return to Chennai) which totals up to 22.8 kmpl. But this is only a ballpark figure since the up journey returned a different mileage compared to the return journey. The hill climbing and slopes must've also had their toll on the mileage. In which case on sea level driving it should probably offer about 25 kmpl. FWIW The forest dept check posts dont ask for any documents. Just that you sign in a register at about 5-6 points as you ascend uphill. Occasionally they only ask for one document sheepishly. The one with gandhiji's head on it. 20-30 should be ok. Though smiling and ignoring them also works .
  22. My New Nano, small question regarding the running in period.

Actually i might take the journey tomorrow. Like you said. Thats a presise guesstimate that youve made. With 50/50 city/Highway driving a yield of 20kmpl is decent. So techincally a 100% highway drive should give me the promised 25kmpl of highway FE. Another quick question is that i dont have my original RC book since the vehicle is just 5 days old and they said the original RC gets issued and will reach the showroom only after a month from purchase date. Will the forest dept or any check posts need this when passing thru marayoor etc ? Thanks
  23. My New Nano, small question regarding the running in period.

Had to call off the trip. Due to the NANO actually. I was planning the trip itself just to give the NANO a test run. Im very disappointed to have found out by a tank full to tank full test that the nano is now giving me 12.5 kmpl in city with ac switched off half the time. Ride quality is horrible to say the least, but more of that in my forthcoming review. I was anyway not venting about all these inconveniences due to the fact that i bought this just for the mileage. The first tank full test it yielded 20kmpl with 50% city and 50% highway driving. The second tank full reveals that im now getting only 12.5 kmpl because there was no highway driving. Thats horrible given its queer looks and autorickshaw styled sound which it does produce. I really regret having bought this car and even just called off the trip because this was such a let down. Whats the fun of going in this when i can drive with my super spacious Eeco 5 seater minus the queer look of the poor mans car with the same mileage !!! Also the engine feel is never consistent like my Zen / Eeco. The car keeps on switching off in traffic and refuses to restart immediately. 6-7 shut offs in every small 12+12 km trip. And now finally this mileage. I know the mileage 'might' improve in the next service (not guaranteed though). But what improvement might i see, 2-3 kms ? Not worth it.
  24. Is it imperative that the oil should be changed during the 3rd fee service of my EECO. Its done only1700km. When i called the service centre they said they should change the oil and oil filter ? Is this true and needed or are they just trying to ensure you spend some cash instead of doing everything free ? Thanks
  25. Maruti Eeco, 3rd Free Service - Oil change is compulsory ?

Thanks for your inputs. Im going to try Kapico Maruti in Ambattur Chennai. Any body have experience with their service.
