  1. Spy shots of the Hyundai Elantra facelift have surfaced online. The front bumper and the foglamps are likely to be revised. Headlamps get new detailing which look more premium than that of the current car. As with most facelifts, the alloy wheel pattern has changed to a more interesting design. The rear of the car also gets slight revisions with the combination lamp getting new elements. The interior would not undergo any drastic changes while the same applies to the hardware as well. The Indian Elantra would continue to use the 1.6 litre 126bhp diesel and the 1.8 litre 147 bhp petrol engines mated to 6-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. These are the first leaked photographs of the next-generation Toyota Corolla.Toyota had showcased a saloon concept called the Corolla Furia at January’s Detroit Motor Show, which was believed to preview the new Corolla’s styling. From these first pictures it seems that although much of the aggressive detailing has been toned down for production, the car’s basic shape and sharp lines have remained faithful to the concept. The styling also appears to be heavily influenced by Toyota’s other recently launched international models – the Rav4 and Auris, and there are hints of the new Camry in there as well.   3. Introduction Its been just over 2 months since I bought the Tata Aria. It was a tough decision since there were so many options in the market one will be spoilt for choice. I still did some research and narrowed down to six cars with Tata Aria, MS Ertiga, Toyota Innova, 2014 Mahindra Scorpio, Chevy Enjoy, Safari Storme. I expelled the Enjoy for its dated cabin and poor quality, next to go was the Storme just because it was so similar to the old safari, next in line to go was the Innova for its taxi image. I narrowed down to 3 options and then deducted the Scorpio because I already owned a 2012 Scorpio and this one was too similar. With the last 2 contender the Tata Aria seemed to be a better contender on parameter of space, practicality and goods on offer in the car. Exterior One would be amazed by looking at its gigantic proportions with a close to 5 meters of length its definitely long. From the front you see a resemblance to other Tata products with vertically slotted sharp headlamps and the smiling grill being the prominent features in the front. Move on to the side and you’re bound to notice the huge proportions of the vehicle. Although the side is pretty much plain you have some design cues such as blacked out B & C pillars and Aria decal running on the side of the car. On the rear it’s the same familiar Tata look with vertical pillar stacked tail lamps with clear lenses. I would like to mention that the panel gaps are prominent in this car although not as drastic and one will be finding these in the bonnet shut lines and the hatch shut lining in the rear, all the other places have almost no panel gaps. The car is quite high and moving in and out of the car is a bit of a task. Also the ORVM are awkwardly designed and are about a feet excess to the car's width. Interior Interior quality is decent but not upto the mark of say a Toyota Innova. One can find some panel gaps although have to mention that the fit and finish is decent and you get a faint resemblance of a range rover dashboard. You get a lot of kit with the car as seen in the pictures which include one touch power down on all windows, Leather upholstery, 3 Rows of AC with independent controls, etc. One thing that might be a sore eye are the ergonomics of the car. For example, there are almost no cubby holes in the car, the twin glove boxes are so shallow that they cant even house the cars own user manual, front passenger footwell is intruded by the 4X4 transfer box, cup holders on the center stack are practically useless as you end up spilling coffee on your gear knob. One saving grace is the size of door pockets which are big enough to have a 2 litre bottle in them and even then have enough space for a harry potter book. Also the bolstering on these seats are not the most efficient and broad frame people will have a problem fitting in them. Middle row is very comfortable with good underthigh support and a reclining backrest and 4 AC vents to keep you cool. Last row is miserable with not enough space for even 5 footer although you have 2 AC vents and enough space for nic nacks. The rear hatch door houses a dedicated subwoofer housing with bracket and boot has an amplifier housing although it’s small, this housing can also be utilized to keep small but necessary things. AC vents are one thing that are in abundance and hence you get 10 AC vents. The armrest does not come in the base model and the one here is a custom made one. Performance and Ride Quality Tata tweaked the engine to make it more refine and up the power to 150 PS and so it’s a good cruiser. The power is there when you want if you keep it in 1500 – 3000 RPM range. Although in lower RPM it showcases a turbo lag. The NVH level of the car are decent considering it to be a single mass flywheel although higher models have a very good NVH level with a dual mass flywheel. The car gives a mileage of 13 in city with AC and 17 on highways with AC and these are good enough for a car in Mumbai. It cruises in peace at about 120Kmph but feels out of place and pushed hard at over 120Kmph. The ride is very leveled with only crater sized potholes filtering into the cabin. It feels at home on highways because car is about 2.5 tonnes it sticks to the tarmac on high speeds and does not wobble. Its sometimes strange to drive of these enormous proportions with this ease. Verdict Many said that I was taking a wrong step in going for a Tata but it was a heart over mind decision and I don’t regret it, although the after sales are very poor and unpremium and regular services take a lifetime to get done let alone the change of parts and Tata is synonymous with poor reliability, but in all due respect I shall say that I will wait and see it for myself how this Tata delivers.   5. I have been looking at buying a diesel family sedan for the last month or so. I already own a M800 for the last 9 years and it takes care of most of my commuting requirements. However as highways get better I feel the M800 looks out of place in highways. Also it is tiring as you get old to make long trips in a M800. Cars I had test driven/researched 1. Skoda Rapid TDI: Pro's 1. Simple and elegant design and interiors. 2. Good drivability and comfort. 3. Rear A/c - nice to have if you happen to drive in Chennai. 4. Superb stability at high speeds Con's 1. Only one dealer in Chennai or Hyderabad - Read a lot of not so nice reviews. 2. 12 lac + price for the top variant (do not see this as value for money) 3. Limited service options if I happen to drive in smaller towns. Decided to skip for the price and dealership reviews 2. Hyundai Verna Pro's 1. Nice design. Best looking sedan for me by a mile. 2. Hyundai CRDI - Been around for long and can be trusted. 3. Lot's of goodies come standard. Con's 1. Only one and that is the vehicle stability at high speeds. Was there in the last 2 but lost out. 3. Honda City Pro's 1. Honda brand and reliability 2. Re-sale value Con's 1. Might be I am one of the very few Indians who likes minimalist designs. And for me the Chrome in 2014 model is too much to bear. The previous Honda City design might have tilted the scale if it was available in diesel now. 4. Ford Classic 2014 TDCI Titanium Pro's 1. My dad already owns a petrol Fiesta and I know more than what I do not know. 2. Good drivability - especially in highways where the surface is not always flat (non-divided highways). 3. Has some of the aesthetics I like in a car. Con's 1. Some parts are real expensive - Had one of the headlamp assembly in my dad's Fiesta broken by a tempo backing up on our car. The OEM part costs about 15k. 2. Low speed torque/power is not ideal for city driving. Having weighed the pro's and con's I have decided to go ahead with the Classic diesel and have made the booking advance and down payment for 1.5 lac. The biggest factor going in this car's favor is the top end variant with nice safety features (ABS, Airbags, EBD) being available for a good price. The on road price was 8.5 lac including bumper to bumper insurance and accessories (floor mat, boot mat, mud flaps and car cover). Price does not include extended warranty. I have got an approval from SBI for 80% finance @ 10.95% (through dealer). I still need to sign the papers with the bank. I was provided with the VIN number upon booking and it looks like they have the car on the way to Secunderabad from the factory. I went for the diamond white and the display car in the showroom had complete black interiors. Will be interesting to see whether I get a one with black (preferred) or Camel brown interiors (hard to maintain with a young kid on board). I checked to see if the VIN is from recent months but looks like I will be guessing on this. None of the websites I checked so far have the details up for 2014 and I do not know if there is any change in Ford's notation for VIN numbers. My guess is that it is from July 2014. Waiting to proceed with the next steps in the coming days. Will keep you posted.

  8. The 6th Generation Honda City is just around the corner and Honda dealers in India are clearing their inventory of the outgoing model by giving discounts of as much as Rs.40,000 on the vehicle!! The Next Gen Honda City will be unveiled in India on the 25th of November 2013. The unveil of the Honda City will be the global showcasing of this car. Apart from the Indian car market, Honda has plans of selling the Next Gen City in many other car markets across the world including many South East Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Previous generations of the City sold here in India have been made available only with petrol engines. As a result, the City lost a huge chunk of its market share to new diesel powered entrants such as the Hyundai Fluidic Verna and the Volkswagen Vento. Honda got a taste of success when it launched the Amaze with a diesel option. Hence, in an attempt to regain and maintain its leadership in the midsized sedan segment the Next Gen City will be powered by the same oil burner that powers the Amaze. However, it is expected that the motor would get a Variable Geometry Turbocharger and hence would have at least 118PS of max power and is likely to have around 225Nm of peak torque. Alongside the diesel, it is expected that the car will come with a 1.5 Liter 4 cylinder Direct Injection petrol engine option which was showcased last year. The new petrol motor produces 127 Bhp of max power and 154 Nm of peak torque. The new 1.5 litre Direct injection petrol motor comes laden with various new technologies such as High-tumble port, Low-tension piston rings, Patterned piston coating, Mass EGR, 2-stage relief oil pump, Lightweight engine block construction and Start-Stop system. This new motor comes under the banner of the much publicised Honda Earth Dreams Technology, and will have high fuel economy and low emissions. But as per Autocar India, the outgoing City’s 1.5 litre i-VTEC engine is likely to be carried over with some minor tweaks to improve power and efficiency. The Next Gen City will be built on the same platform as the upcoming next generation Jazz and both ot these vehicles will be locally assembled. The car could take some design inspiration from the new Crider sedan. It is also expected that the car would grow marginally in size. The Next Gen City is likely to be packed with a host of new features like automatic climate control, bluetooth connectivity, etc. as Honda will be trying its best to keep up with growing demands of the C-segment sedan buyers. Combined with the fantastic interior packaging efforts seen in Honda’s recent cars, the new City could very well set a new class benchmark for cabin space. The interiors will be upgraded too with a more upmarket ambience and more equipment, one of the current car’s shortcomings. Though the car will be unveiled on the 25th of November 2013, deliveries are expected to begin only in January 2014.   10. The iconic Stingray name is back. Chevrolet took the covers of the 2014 Corvette at the Detroit Motor Show and has given it the Stingray name. The new Vette will be powered by a 6.2 liter V8 engine churning out 450 bhp. Transmission will either be a 7 speed manual and a six speed auto box with paddleshifts. What do you feel?   11. Ambassador hatchback coming in 2014

    The Ambassador refuses to die and next year it will be back in a new avtaar as a hatchback. Buoyed by recent sales growth, the C K Birla group company has taken up an ambitious project to introduce the hatchback Ambassador by the end of 2013-14. "We have just started the R&D (research and development) work. This hatchback version of the Ambassador will have all kinds of features and better interior, which a new-age customer looks for," Uttam Bose, managing director and chief executive officer of HM, told Business standard. The car, which is at the "designing stage", will be built on the existing Ambassador platform at its Uttarpara plant. "The brand name Ambassador will be used for the car. There may or may not be a sub-brand," Bose said. Before that, in the second quarter of the next financial year, HM will introduce a sub-four metre Ambassador. "In the coming June, we will launch the BS IV-compliant diesel variant of the Ambassador. This will be a replica of the existing model Ambassador, just changing the engine,” he said. At present, the Ambassador has BS-III emission norms-compliant diesel engine. The company is still selling these models in Kolkata, the biggest market for the Ambassador cars, as the state government has exempted the model from BS-IV norms, for now.   12. Hyundai revealed the Grand i10 in India and at the same time has revealed the new i10 for Europe. Both the cars looks pretty similar except for a few details like DRLs on the front of the European model and the roof rails are missing as well. The 2014 i10 for Europe is longer than the current i10 by 80mm, wider by 65mm and lower by 50mm. The wheelbase sees an extension of 5mm. The Grand i10 for India is even larger than the 2014 Euro i10, though the official specifications aren’t out yet. For Europe, Hyundai will use the 1.0-liter 3-cylinder petrol and the 1.2-liter Kappa2 petrol. A diesel engine hasn’t been confirmed yet.   13. The next generation Mercedes-Benz S-class will be revealed in Hamburg on 15 May, Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche has revealed. The next generation Merc S-class following the failure of Maybach. Zetsche said that Mercedes would "broaden the portfolio of the S-class" to make more luxurious versions aimed at the Rolls-Royce Ghost. He also confirmed the next generation C-class would be revealed next year. The new model, along with the recently revised E-class, are crucial for Mercedes in China if it is to close the gap on Audi and BMW, according to Zetsche. The new C-class and S-class are new Mercedes not included in Mercedes' plan to launch 13 new models without a predecessor by 2020, but three of the five models - CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA SUV - to be spun off the A-class platform were. Looking at it from an India, angle Im very eager to see if the new S Class will bring back the glory that it has somehow lost in recent times to the other Germans in India. Only time will tell.   14. Here are a couple of spy pics of the next gen 2014 SX4 which has started testing in China. The new Suzuki SX4 is a huge improvement over its predecessor which was jointly developed with Fiat. The successor was previewed by the S-Cross concept at last year’s Paris Motor Show. The car is powered by 1.6 litre petrol and diesel engines. Suzuki continues to source diesel engines from Fiat. The crossover sports a newly developed All Grip 4WD system. Styling wise, the car is a typical Suzuki and has features like daytime LED running lights and the world’s first double sunroof.   15. Jeep has revealed the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT8. The SRT gets a new front grille, LED headlamps, and a new rear spoiler and alloys. the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT8 features a new launch control feature and a tweaked Selec-Track system which is now sending more torque to the rear wheels for improved performance whilst Track Mode is turned on. The most significant change is the addition of an 8-speed, quick-shifting automatic transmission which should lower fuel consumption and enhance performance. The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine has the same 470 hp (350 kW) and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm), but the SUV should be quicker in the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) with the new gearbox.   16. The all new Fiat Grande Punto will make its debut in 2014 and hopefully come to India in the same year. Grande Punto though being a good car has not able to turn Fiat’s fortune in India. The lack of after sales service and marketing by Fiat has costed the beautiful and well built car suffer in competition with half baked Japanese, American and Indian cars. The next generation Grande Punto will have a much more dynamic design and come with latest technologies from Fiat. The more advance Multi-jet engine is also expected to come through the new Grande Punto. With a good design, more interior space and higher ground clearance, the next generation Grande Punto has something promising for the future in India, and of course Fiat has to work really hard on the marketing and after sales service.
