Tata Tiago - Hitting the right notes

Recommended Posts

Tata-Indica-eV2-Right-Side-61315.jpg?wm=0

After a long time we see a product from Tata stable which looks capable and also has got a killer price tag Rs.3.20 - 5.54 lakh.

With the help of Tiago it seems like Tata is trying to gain the lost grip in the passenger vehicles segment and the best part of it is the price.

Indica gained the acceptance but could not stand against the competition due to lots of issues and inexperience of Tata Motors in small passenger vehicle segment.

Tata Bolt could not bring the confidence in the customer due to brand "TATA" and steep price.

Now Tiago has all the right elements that can attract a buyer to opt for the same such as

exterior design

interiors design

features

interior space

and the most importantly the price.

Only low point about Tiago is the after sales service. So it's a gamble that a customer have to play while taking decision about Tiago. People who have experience 1st Gen Tata Indica may come back to TATA again.

If we keep aside specs related to engine the following specs of Tiago are impressive at the price it is offered as compared some other hatch.

I feel grand i10 is still safe from competition from Tiago due to it's premiumness and the brand Hyundai hold more value than other.

After comparing with competition it seems Tata Tiago is a big hatch at a small price.

Add to that the excellent pricing they had come up with.

It's only the brand image at play here.

Give this car a Maruti / Hyundai logo and see how it does.

Tata is into a vicious circle, they want people to try their new products to experience their improvement. But people are keeping away from them for their not so good legacy. But then until they try these products, their opinion will never change about Tata.

Tata has to get everything right with this car.

Their design and production team have delivered a good car. Now up to the sales and marketing team to sell it well and the after sales team to keep up with the changed image.

Very less seems to be happening around the after sales issues. Car not being looked after well, shoddy job of changing oil and filters, customer issues not being addressed are very common comments I hear from friends who have Tata cars. Most have shifted to known local mechanics to get the job done. Tata should try to target this area as an immediate improvement area and ensure that there is an image uplift here.

Tiago definitely seems to be a good car. But it is the after sales that can script the story for good or worse now.

Saw this on the roads a few times and it definitely is a head turner. You don't mistake this for some other car easily.

"Cute" or "Nice" are the words you say unknowingly. It's dimensions are definitely around Celerio but it has much better road presence.

I would like to test drive it to know how it really works. What is weird though that they have made a new revotron 3 cyl 1.2 engine when they had a 4 cyl one in the Bolt. Team BHP reviews are very average for the petrol unit but okay-good for the diesel.

I also saw couple of Tiago on road and it's a pleasant surprise to see a TATA Car matching it's design with famous cars like Grand i10 otherwise we see most of IndigoCS and Indica with "T" badge or the oversized Manza.

I agree Neeraj. Reviews about petrol engine is not something to talk about but may be Tata must have focussed more on "Fuel Economy". Interiors of Tiago is quite acceptable at the price at which it is starting.

Received this image as a Whatsapp forward... looks like Tata is readying a hotter Tiago as ACI had reported a a while ago: http://www.autocarindia.com/auto-news/scoop-tata-to-launch-sport-version-of-tiago-402773.aspx

Tata Motors has shelved the launch of the Bolt Sport in favour of a sport version of the Tiago.

The Bolt Sport, which was officially unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo was ready for a market introduction later this year, but poor sales of the regular Bolt has raised doubts about the acceptance of a more expensive and less fuel-efficient Bolt Sport.

Though the price of the Bolt Sport was not officially announced, Tata Motors was targeting a price-tag of below Rs eight lakh to undercut the Fiat Punto Abarth by a substantial margin. However, Tata Motors would have to sell at least 2,000 Bolt Sport units a year, to make the hot hatch financially viable at that price point, according to company sources. In the last financial year (2014-15), Tata Motors could only manage to sell around 8,800 Bolts and hence, expecting the Bolt Sport to account for over 20 percent of the total sales would be a very tall order.

“The hot hatch market is still in a nascent stage and given the low base for the standard Bolt, we don’t believe we can achieve the necessary volumes to make the Bolt Sport a success” said a source.
Tata Motors has switched focus and is now planning to develop a hot-hatch variant of the all-new Tiago. This change of strategy has been prompted by the very encouraging market response to Tata’s latest hatchback, which is fast gaining acceptance amongst budget car buyers. However, Tata's brand image is still a big weakness and the company feels halo models like the Tiago Sport would go a long way in making this hatchback, which Tata is betting big on, more aspirational.

The Tiago Sport won’t get the 1.2-litre, four-cylinder Revotron from the Bolt, but will instead use a turbocharged version of the current 1.2, three-cylinder motor, which is primarily being developed for the upcoming Nexon compact SUV. However, the estimated power output of 105hp for the Nexon motor may not be enough for the Tiago Sport, especially since the now defunct Bolt Sport was developing closer to 120hp. It’s likely that Tata Motors may bump up the Tiago Sport to beyond 120hp by using a bigger turbo and changes to the electronics, to make it a credible rival to the other hot hatches like the Punto Abarth and upcoming Baleno RS.

Apart from a more powerful engine, the Tiago Sport is expected to come with a lowered suspension, stiffer damping and an aggressive looking body kit to distinguish it from the regular Tiago.

Unlike the Bolt, which was essentially a face-lifted version of the older Vista, the Tiago is a completely new model and the first of a fresh range of products that Tata Motors has invested heavily in. In July 2016, Tata Motors sold over 5,000 Tiagos, making it, just within three months of its launch, the best-selling car in the entire Tata Motors' range.
