the perfect car for India!

Recommended Posts

just opened the Autocar India buyers guide the other day and realised that there are a decent number of options for a new car buyer. so i started wondering which would be the perfect car for the Indian 'janata'. i started eliminating the cars one by one, based on various factors:

1.cost below Rs.10 lakh, coz that's what maximum most Indians can afford.

2.fuel economy, VERY VERY important, which means diesel engines preferred.

3.decent space for 5 people, so i am leaving out the joint families.

4.good ride quality and strong build, to withstand our roads.

5.company image, which means for eg. Maruti and Honda are more loved in India than Ford and Fiat.

6.Our crowded city roads and lack of parking space.

etc etc etc.

thus, i ended up with a list, a surprisingly long one at that, which is as follows:

1.Chevrolet Aveo U-VA

2.Optra Magnum Diesel

3.Ford Fiesta Diesel

4.Ford Fusion Diesel

5.Honda City

6.Hyundai Getz Diesel

7.Hyundai Verna Diesel

8.Mahindra-Renault Logan Diesel

9.Mahindra Scorpio

10.Maruti Swift Petrol/Diesel

11.Maruti Versa (surprised, think about it....)

12.Skoda Octavia/Combi diesel

13.Skoda Laura (i know it costs more than 10 lakh, but it fits the requirements pretty well otherwise)

14.Tata Indica Diesel

15.Tata Indigo/Marina Diesel

lets dicuss this topic and try and pick just one car on which everyone agrees (easier said than done ,eh.....)

of the 15 i would narrow the list to :Chevrolet Aveo U-VA

Optra Magnum Diesel

Ford Fiesta Diesel

Honda City

Hyundai Getz Diesel

Hyundai Verna Diesel

Mahindra-Renault Logan Diesel

Mahindra Scorpio

Maruti Swift Petrol/Diesel

Tata Indica Diesel/Tata Indigo/Marina Diesel

reasons for not choosing:

Fusion-expensive and interiors bland/mileage??

Versa -cant think of any positive

Skoda Octavia+Skoda Laura -u said it..its expensive, out of budget for most if not for the maximum crowd.

amonh all the above i would choose....but wait what about the SX4,

ok, lets leave out the Octavia and Laura on the grounds of being too expensive to buy.and the Versa too on account of having 'zero' image.

i left out the SX4 from the list because of its not-so-fuel-efficient 1.6ltr petrol motor; and also the Innova as it is too big to drive and park in the city.

so the list now reads as follows:

1.Chevrolet Aveo U-VA

2.Optra Magnum Diesel

3.Ford Fiesta Diesel

4.Ford Fusion Diesel

5.Honda City

6.Hyundai Getz Diesel

7.Hyundai Verna Diesel

8.Mahindra-Renault Logan Diesel

9.Mahindra Scorpio

10.Maruti Swift Petrol/Diesel

11.Tata Indica Diesel

12.Tata Indigo/Marina Diesel

also, my aim is to finally chose just ONE car and not the best option in each segment.

I think we cannot deny the fact that most of the cars above 5L below 10L would be for urban people, who are increasing concious about the power, coupled with better highways with lane systems. So, we should add a few parameters as well:

7. Best pulling power (torque)

8. ABS/EBD for fast drivers.

9. Decent bootspace (It will take sometime before Indians quit the habit of travelling heavy all the time).

lets leave out the Indica also (since you can have the Indigo with a boot for not much more) and the Marina (station wagon concept hasnt caught up in India).

the Ford Fusion is also left out as it doesnt seem to provide VFM. and lets add the new Skoda Fabia Diesel to the list.

1.Chevrolet Aveo U-VA

2.Optra Magnum Diesel

3.Ford Fiesta Diesel

4.Honda City

5.Hyundai Getz Diesel

6.Hyundai Verna Diesel

7.Mahindra-Renault Logan Diesel

8.Mahindra Scorpio

9.Maruti Swift Petrol/Diesel

10.Skoda Fabia Diesel

11.Tata Indigo Diesel
