  1. I wont recommend you Apollo tyres. I strongly suggest you to abstain from apollos. They are prone to manufacturing defects and tyre busts. I have 5 friends in my circle who had problem with apollos or a tyre bust . One of my friends met with an accident when his magnums tyre busted at high speed. The other had tyre bust twice on his swift . I will suggest you to go for other reputed brand . Even bridgestone gets hard after 30,000 as they proceed towrds their end of life and starts making noice. You can try a yokohama A drive if you want to spend more or can go for MRF ZVTS or Goodyear Duraplus . You can also go for 176/70 R13 upgrade . It will be a decent upgrade .
  2. The reviews about bosch brake pads are positive. One of my friends is using these on his Ritz VDI. In his opinion the braking effieciency is good and the blackening of alloys has decreased in comparison to stock brake pads which were TVS . He is a rash driver and his brake pads last maximum 20,000 kms
  3. There are many additives available in the market. The most easily available at local petrol stations for instance at Bharat petroleum stations , you can find System G for petrol and System D for diesel by Intex. I am not sure how much improvement will it make to your cars performance but it will help to clear deposits in fuel injection system. But be cautious to add recommended level and not to exceed them as it can corrode metal parts in fuel line resulting into obstructing something. It can corrode and decay rubber parts if used in excess. Other caution : Pour additive in well ventilated area and avoid storage in car cabin or rear boot. A spill in the car can be hazardous for health.
  4. I think it wont be a wrong choice either to go with VXI instead of ZXI considering the price difference. You should go with it , it will be a fine choice . If you are spending around 5 lac on this car , you can also test drive Celerio AMT , it will also be fun to drive for you and a reletively fresh face . But due to long waiting period for delivery it is far from being a good alternate option. Good luck ! Those accessories you are planning will be cool option to enhance its looks! But be cautious from where you buy it. Dont compromise on quality and dont spend without giving a thought. Check your local vendors for stuff and you will discover a good price difference in quotations . Be careful on that. As per your spoiler if its already painted , its fine or else you need a good paint job .
  5. To win this jackpot, pandey ji , you have to with the audience poll. I think ComputerG lock kar diya , your only suggested option Celerio. When there are so many learned minds suggesting you celerio above, how can i deviate. Go with it and you will be a hapy man !
  6. Friends and fellows , in this thread i wish everyone to share their practical experiences about engine swaps. What swap you made and from where you sourced and cost incurred on such experiments. I hope it could be beneficial to others . Kindly contribute with pictures even if its your friends cars...
  7. The maruti suzuki zen came with a electronic power steering orignally fitted by manufacturer. There was an issue with the electronic steerings in zen which failed at some stage in many cars due to water getting in the circuit due to washing as owners were unaware or at other times that circuit failed . But that small circuit , the size resembling the bigger homelight matchbox , also failed at other times out of unknown reasons. The electronic power steering mainly composed of that circuit control i mentioned above which costs around from Rs 3500 to Rs 5000 depending upon its repaired or orignal , available with disposal shops and the motor around Rs 8000 in the disposal market. Its good if you could find a company that does the job OR the otherway is if you could source one from disposal market complete set . I guess it should cost you below Rs 15000 and your mechanic should be able to install it with the help of electrician.
  8. Mahindra 2.5 engine is a quite efficient engine and i dont understand what kind of performance you want to extract out it. Since you think its not giving you power surge , you should take a test drive of other competitors of same segment like innova and you will feel mahindra engine is more responsive. Still you can go with modifications , the simplest of all being the air intake , you can fix some free flow air filter like K & N . I am not sure of compatible filter availability but it wont be an issue. Again if you are in dusty conditions your stock filtration is best. Spending more you will have to check for ECM remapping and that has to be an expert job and money pouring in . Your car is a decent car , i will suggest you not to tamper it.
  9. hello friend, i have read your query. I observe you have 3 cars on mind. Every opinion is based on personal experiences. Let me tell you that i will advocate a suzuki car and try to suggest you with other options as well. i10grand: I will suggest you to refrain from hyundai unless you have a special taste for it. Hyundai cars are fun to drive with very smooth pedals and equipment, a better plastic quality then rivals but i have noticed that the metal used is prone to rusting. You can notice rusting body underneath hood and boot and also underbody especially in front of rear wheels on older accents and santro . Its a pain . You have mentioned REASONABLE COST OF OWNERSHIP as your priority . Though suzuki cars are no longer cheap but yet the cost of maintenance is less comparatively. This suggestion is out of previous ownership of a hyundai accent crdi and santro. Ecosport : Unless you are a fan of the looks of ecosport or wish to buy a SUV style car with low price tag, i will strongly suggest not to buy ford as parts availability in open market is less and they cost you a fortune. The biggest drawback with ford is they suffer parts failure with time without wear and tear. They demand parts replacements and the cost is relatively high. Above suggestion is out of experience with ownership of a ford icon 1.3 petrol. Swift : I will suggest you to go with a suzuki Swift . When it will come to longterm ownership , suzuki will cost you less and as per your priority i will consider this parameter. The parts are widely and locally available in case of urgency. The quality of swift has been considerably improved. The swift faced a braking efficiency issue on older models and on new swift ABS has improved braking capabilities. Resale: When we count on this Swift will again score high in comparison to hyundai and ford. Though Hyundai also has a good resale in India. Diesel/Petrol: As per your current driving pattern, i suggest to buy a petrol version of any car . Lets take example of swift . Diesel swift costs 1 lac over petrol ( top variants). As your daily driving distance is 10 kms presently and lets take a hypothetical situation for same distance. If you drive daily 10 kms like this and both the car ( petrol-diesel) deliver you an overall efficiency of 15 kmpl in actual driving conditions for start stop short distance, then at present fuel prices ( diesel 55 rs /lt and petrol 80 rs / lt ) , it turns out to be a cost difference of rs 2 per km in which case you will take another 13 years to recover the cost difference of 1 lac rs without calculating the interest and lets keep the cost difference in spares of petrol- diesel plus battery aside and service cost aside. Other options: I will suggest you to consider other options in same price tag also considering your budget of 5-7 lac rs. EX-Showroom price as per maruti suzuki official website in Chandigarh: Swift ZDI : 6.71 lac OR Ertiga VXI ABS: 6.71 OR Dzire AMT: 6.63 lac OR Dzire ZXI : 6.34 lac OR Dzire VDI: 6.51 L( approx.) Swift ZXI : 5.70 lac OR Swift VDI : 5.95 OR Ertiga LXI: 5.95 lac OR Dzire LDI : 5.95 lac OR Dzire VXI : 5.44 lac ( approx.) Swift VXI : 4.89 lac OR Swift LDI : 5.48 OR Dzire LXI :4.89 lac OR Celerio VXI AMT : 4.49 lac approx. LXI,VXI,ZXI : PETROL LDI,VDI,ZDI: DIESEL AMT: FOR SEMI AUTO TRANSMISSION ( only for understanding, not exact ) CONCLUSION: You should consider other options also in the same price tag. I have tried to classify them. You can consider new auto transmission celerio if you want a hatch back as you have a short distance to drive and it shall cost you 5.30 lac on road and it will be easier for short drives. You should also give a thought to DZire due to practicality of boot space. Its a heaven when you have a boot at rear to use. On occasional family trips you will realize its worth. As a collegian i always preferred sedan with a boot over a hatch, its really necessary. In context to your ecosport you should give a serious thought and test drive Ertiga. It has high seating drives like a MUV. Has a very soft ride and comfortable suspension and is a very practical car. It gives you a feel of bigger car with better brakes and lot of space. Good Luck!
  10. Congrats for your new companion. I can imagine how confusing the period is before buying a car and how joyful it is after owning a car. Its like a big addition to a family , like a new born brought to home . Wish you safe driving and luck on road. We will wait for your reviews in the future!
  11. Appreciate your work. Keep it up. Observing your passion why dont you try this with other materials . I have noticed vintage car models handcrafted with steel as a work of art at various showrooms as decor. Those distorted shaped car models and even tank models are sold as high as 3 to 6 thousand. And they even dont involve minute and exact meausrements. You can give a thought . Atleast for your home decor. Good luck!
  12. I feel LeoRahi has answered your questions to satisfaction. I agree with his reply. ABS should be made compulsory in present scenario as it enhances the steering control to a great extent. ABS also has its drw backs. Its due to poor construction quality of roads with loose gravel and pot holes. Example : ABS is anti locking braking system, it wont lock your brakes and car doesnt skid under hard braking and you can maneuver the vehicle and escape accident. BUT if there is loose gravel on road or you hit a pothole or one tyre is on kaccha portion of road, ABS will work decrasing the stopping distance of vehicle and chance of hitting increases. CRASH TEST: There is a responsibilty on part of manufacturers also . You can find an article on internet about major companies cars failing crash tests in india. Its again a big ? DRIVER: Human role is significant. LeoRahi has mentioned drunken driving already so wont mention same things. Obtaining driving license without proper channel is a big reason for ignorant and unaware drivers on load, a direct threat to other commuters. Plus they remove the head rests on car seats for style but doesnt know how fatal that activity is. In short they cannot predict the consequences of their acts. The list is endless , lets other enlightened minds contribute.
  13. Here it is my friends ... and thanks brother for instructing me on picture uploads.
  14. Well never expected this discussion! But its tasty to discuss it. Nice cuisine you are having out there. Well i had my chicken salad . Wish i could post a picture. I dont know actually how to post one. Its a salad of chicken garlic tikka cut into pieces with broccoli and lettuce with a thick creamy base of yogurt and mayo with salt and black pepper sprinkled with lemon juice and virgin olive oil and strawberries on top. Most important i made it myself. Sounds yummy!
  15. In my opinion its just another edited old car. Do you remember the days when maruti used to launch a new model with just chrome handles and door kits , i mean nothing except like adding another spoon of sugar to your shake. Since consumer has matured a bit , now theres another trend of these crossovers . Etios cross didn't appeal to me much . It gives rather a look of cheap plastic outside and more a toy like look. I tried to discover something macho in it but didnt really find it. On my morning walks i often see a palio cross and an opel corsa cross and yet those are compatible with their shapes, looks more a natural design and not a exaggerated fitments. Maybe they didnt fair well because they were introductions before time . This is also a problem with Indian market that anything introduced before time and late in market wont get a desirable response. End of the day , lets see how it copes with the market conditions. Indian auto market is a place where you can find customer for every type of car. Thats why its written in school history books : Unity in Diversity.
  16. Safety is the best policy. Drive carefully!

  17. If you have a old ripped jean , that doeanot serve your purpose and you are reluctant to wear it . Just wear those jeans with casual Ts and new loafers and you will see that those old worn out jeans looks like latest fashion. Its the shoes that made the difference. In my taste , adding good brand tyres with decent alloys will add a grace to the looks of your old car. If you want cathy add chrome multi spoke or else silver alloys in 13 inch size with good brand tyres atleast 165/70 or 175/ 65 whatever. And add rubber plugs to lift the rear suspension a little bit very wisely. Get her done rubbing and use your amway wash with polish . I am sure you will love cleaning her next time. To add to taste upgrade your tube lights and horns with a relay and change your seat covers with economical new ones. And there you will have a new car . Best to drive to markets for groccery pickups. Moreover you can keep your old 12 inch rims and tyres that if your mind changes lateron , shift your new rim tyres to any other car. Goodluck!
  18. Tempering digital odometer is almost 30 min process. Maybe an expert takes even less time. It requires opening your odometer by removing the steering wheel and the circuit of odometer is attached to a pc where you can change the reading to your desired number through a special computer software. And you fit it back. The charges may vary from 500 to 1500 rs depending upon the market value or resale value of the vehicle. And you cannot discover it until you unscrew and open the meter again. CATCH: Now i will give you a trick to catch the tempered odometer . Its simple but maynot work on few cars. I tried it on authorized second hand dealership cars and found it worked. Normaly the speedometer hand rests on zero kmph mark on a car with engine off and it wont shake or move even if you hit the meter from above. But on a tampered odometer the speedometer needle/ hand tends to jump a bit if you hit hard on dashboard with your hand above the odometer console. This is a trick to catch a cheat. Good luck!
  19. Hi, this is a normal practise all over car washing stations to use hair shampoo for cars. Hair shampoo vs detergent bar: In my opinion the car washing stations use two products hair shampoo and detergent soaps. While the detergent is ok with muddy tyres, it wont be friendly with your paint and make it rough. Now hair shampoo is still better then detergents. Hair shampoo vs car wash : Hair shampoo is specifically designed to lather away dirt from your hairs and hair are basically a protein structure while your car paint is not a protein, therefore the cleansing efficiency will vary. Since hair shampoo is mild it wont harm your paint but will not clean mudd on tyres and bird residue on paint well and may leave water spots . In contrast if you use car wash it will better lift dust and residue on paint and will also give some lustre without much water spots. I use amway car wash and polish its easily available with amway agents and peace of mind that you are not buying fakes of reputed brands. Additionaly use a microfibre absorbing cloth to prevent water droplets spotting, costs around rs 70 / 80. End of the day no one will use car shampoo over his hair But vice versa is still ok!
  20. I have got a reply from MSIL and they have quoted following: Refferred to your query we would like to inform you that: 1. Recommended engine oil grade for Ertiga is 5W40 (Castrol, Mobil, Petronas). 2. Cost of 5W40 engine oil recommedned at MSIL authorized service centres is Rs. 625/- per litre. 3. Packing of oil is available both in barrel (drum) as well as in sealed cans. 4. Customers are not encouraged to souce the any spare part/lubricant from market. It has direct impact on warranty of vehicles. In case customer vehicle is under warranty period and he is using local parts/lubricants then the warranty stands null on related parts/vehicle systems.
  21. My friend , i would not have started this thread if MASS would have given me a satisfactory answer. Moreover, there are many friends who are unaware of the oil factor. If this thread reaches a fruitful conclusion , it may be helpful to many who have similar questions in mind. The quality of experience and service varies by a big difference from a merc to maruti. So i feel this discussion wont be vainless. I am thankful for your opinion, i will appreciate more if you can share something from your valuable experience. Thanku friend.
  22. As per your budget my suggestions are listed below. Since you didn't mention a sedan or a SUV , i will list both as far as my knowledge is concerned. SEDAN: Honda city: The diesel is relatively new to our market. The autocar has covered a detailed review of this car in previous issues this year and you can refer that . If you can adjust with the Indian style bookings and delivery system this could be decent car in 10/12 lac price bracket. You will get the joy of luxury and build quality of honda is still better then rivals. Customers are cautious of diesel clatter of engine in cabin , so consider this point and check in person before you go for this. Cruze: Though a long time in market , its a good looking car with road presence . You will get performance and looks . You can try it but i feel personally that its a bit tight as far as sitting and cabin space is concerned. Then you should also consider the resale . Chevy does not have a very strong resale i think. New altis: You should definitely pay a visit to dealership to check this car . This can prove a mix of comfort and class with reliability . The previous altis had a fair fuel efficiency but the engine was not as responsive if you want a performance oriented car. Personally i would have gone for this due to its reputation . It also carries a insignia of urban elite class using this car and it will give you a decent road presence if not very strong. SUV: Duster/ Terrano : These are two softroaders have a strong road presence and good fuel efficiency. They are not pure SUVs and we can call them soft roaders and not off roaders and these cars have been designed to look big then they really are. If you are a daily user then this can deliver you fuel economy of 18 plus kmpl and feeling of driving a SUV. Only cons are i feel price has been bit exaggerated and spares are a problem in local market, even dealerships do not have sufficient spares in case a car meets an accident. Thats a practical point to consider. XUV: Mahindra has a better reliable network for sale and service. Local market spares are still an issue but dealerships wont have such problem. This car has been loaded with almost every type of sensor and gives you a over equipped feeling. The suspension is hard and will fair well on off-road capabilities in comparison to duster. The engine is more powerful and fuel economy is around 13 kmpl. The car can be a good choice . Only cons are that the car does not have a very strong road presence with cheeta inspired looks. It could have carried a classic evergreen look and would look more bold and dominating. The other thing is the quality of plastics is not very appealing. Safari Storm: This car has a better road presence as the previous generation. Though it is claimed to be a different design inspired from rover looks but it does not look very different from previous safari. The car has good performance and sufficient space. It has less sensors and givers you regular feeling . The car carries previous heredity of off-road capability and road presence. Some people will prefer this over mahindra XUV . End of the day you can have a test drive and consider your innerself because i dont trust tatas quality of manufacturing and longevity. MPV: Innova: Now here my personal bias would play a role. In 15 lac i would have considered a variant of innova. Its a very very comfortable vehicle. When it comes to utility it pays you back the money spent on it. The seating and car has been designed so well that you dont feel tired on long drives and serve family purpose well too. I have driven this for 8/9 hours at single stretch and never felt tired. Plus points are that its a very practical vehicle with a very strong resale value. Engine runs far 3 lac kms. Delivers 12/13 kmpl fuel economy. The negative point is only one the exaggerated price has pushed it into next category of vehicles , the top variant fairs in 17.5 lac on road approx. This is not justifiable. But you should consider this as an option and you wont repent spending money on this i bet. These are my opinions. You can go for your friends advice who have previously owned these vehicles. End of the day do what your heart says. Good luck.
  23. I have mailed my query to MSIL regarding their policy on the engine oil recommendations and distribution system and also their policy on outsourcing oil if dissatisfied with the authorized service centre. i am waiting for their reply. i shall disclose the same as soon as i get one and if thats a relevant reply.
  24. Sure, the cost factor is the major determining factor and i completely agree with you. i will try doing some practical market research and make sure what it turns to be. i will also enlist the approximate quotation and if i go for this kind of thing then the actual costs incurred. If that exceeds the cost of a a good engine swap then its not wise to do so. The only reason was to keep documentation non tempered . Thanks for posting. Always new creations are result of healthy discussions
  25. Well ! I agree with the grievances of our fellow member. Though i am posting this very late on this thread as its from 2009 but i thought it relevant to back his cause of worry. I too have a verna 2010 crdi model . I faced a problem with the temperature gauge as it was not working. I checked the coolant level in coolant tank and it was ok , near full mark . I drove it over 200 kms without difficulty ,went to hyundai dealership and got it serviced in month of jan 2013 . I brought this problem to their notice but it was not looked into nor brought on record as they said their electrician would check it who was absent that day. I drove another 200 kms at moderate speed and got back home. Just after 2 days i started a trip to Jaipur in Rajasthan from Faridkot royal city in Punjab . To add to my woes the engine ceased in middle of dessert on highway driving at 130 kmph. I felt a sudden loss of power and the temp monitor boiled. The engine rattled and jammed as the speed decreased . It was like a nightmare in the day. Only luck/ gods help was it ceased near a toll plaza. Parked the car there . Called Hyundai and i was denied roadside assistance. Hired a innova and went to Jaipur for work. After 4 days on coming back as no hyundai dealership was ready to rescue nearby. I got a iron rod customized myself with bent hooks and all to fix it at innovas rear and verna front as brakes were not working and towed it 300 kms back to Punjab. This all happened at 58,000 kms on odometer. And only thing left working on car was odometer. As the dealer realized by now that i was a stubborn customer and would make all hue and cry for warranty. The defect was found to be leaked radiator due to manufacturing defect. I dont remember exactly what i paid unless i check the bills and i am not sure whether they did all repair honestly but for sure the radiator and piston rings were changed with head gasket. My fault was that i even repent today why i didn't check the radiator opening the cap and relied on coolant level in tank. I got this car serviced at authorized dealership only. Where as i personally check my accent crdi for minute fixes and get oil changes at local mechanic shop and it clocked 1,65,000 kms for now and things are working fine. Overall experience with verna is not very good. Maybe this will help somebody that i posted.
