  2. I've been using this car since July 2012 (all thanks to my boss! )and yes this is my company car- a 2009 Tata Nano LX. Regular readers of the Autocar India magazine would recognize this one instantly! Here's why.. This is the car that was one of the first Nano's to roll off the showrooms and we gave you a full dealership and buying experience when we bought it. AND this is the car that was featured in numerous reviews, road test, long term tests in Autocar India. YES! This is the car that did the epic trip from Singur to Sanad. and Yes (If i am not wrong!) This is one of the very few Nano's that can proudly be called as "Made in Singur"! One of my best experiences with this car was in December last year when I took the car for a routine service at Tata Motors' workshop in Worli Mumbai. A young chap of around 20 was curiously checking out this golden nano. I saw him seeing the car for almost ten mins from various angles. Feeling suspicious, I went near him and seeing me, he raised a question, sir, is this your car? I said yes, Its a company car. But may I i know why do you ask? He said yes, I remember this one, 4068. Its Autocar India's Nano! I remember this one very well. This is the one that made me take the happy decision of buying my first car and then he pointed out towards a yellow one that he had brought for servicing. Hearing all this from him made me proud of the iconic little wonder that I get to use daily and also the publication I work for. This is just one story, I have come accross some more people who remember the cute 4068 very well. One of my colleagues who was part of the Singur to Sanand Drive also bought a similar Nano as a personal car and there are many more! Will come up with more of my experiences with the Nano soon. Its indeed "Khushiyo ki Chaabi" for many Indians! and yes it has more features ( little things that matter) which are not available in the newer 800cc cars! So today (17/2/2013) I took the car to Motoshines, Saki Naka for a steam wash and interior cleaning. Now let the pictures do the talking! This is the place I went to get the car cleaned, Motoshines, Saki Naka, Mumbai The car before cleaning treatment The floor-mats getting cleaned Interior gets a through vacuum done Clean interior for sure Steam wash process starts and more steam wash and some more Ozone treatment starts, this is a treatment done to remove all foul odor from the interior of the car. Total time for the Ozone treatment was 15 mins. The tyres getting the "shine treatment" Clean, real clean interiors and seats. The dash got a mild wax polish done too! Ready to go! Total time for this process, approx 45min to one hour. Approxmate cost: Rs 500 for both steam wash and interior treatment.
  3. Nissan today launched the Nissan Safety Driving Forum in India. This is to create awareness for road safety and educate people on the importance of safety features in cars today. The event was launched in Mumbai today in the parking lot of InOrbit Mall Malad, Mumbai, where it will go on for the 16th and 17th of February 2013. The event is open for general public. This will be followed by events in Delhi and Chennai as well. Mr Takayuki Ishida, the M.D. and CEO of Nissan India and Mr Nitish Tipnis Director Sales and Marketing for Hover Automotive were present at the event. Mr Tipnis made it clear that there will be no compromise on safety in any of Nissan’s models or variant and that even the entry level base models will come with important safety features. There were 3 simulators that were kept at the event for every one to try. One specific one I would to mention is the simulator to emphasize seat belt importance where you would sit in a Nissan Micra and it would be flipped 360 degrees of course in slow motion thus illustrating how important belting up is today in the event of a rollover. Apart from that there were displays on road safety as well as the body shell of a Nissan Micra as well. Simulators focusing on Airbags and Braking systems were also seen. I did try the simulators myself and found them quite interesting In my opinion, this is an excellent initiative by Nissan. There should be more such event by manufacturers in the future More pictures in the next post
  4. Instead of usual fanfare, Japanese car maker Isuzu has gone ahead and silently opened bookings of the MU-7 SUV and the D Max pickup in single and double cab configurations. The first dealership has come up in Hyderabad and a second one will be coming up soon in Coimbatore Prices: Ex Showroom Hyderabad MU-7 SUV - Rs 23.75 lakhs D Max Single Cab - Rs 6.87 lakhs D Max Double Cab - Rs 8.09 lakhs Pretty steep pricing if you ask me. The D Max will surely have a tough time competing against the established, tried and tested Mahindra products
  5. Honda has launched the fourth-generation CR-V in India. The new CR-V is based on an all-new platform and comes with a blend of both quirky yet modern details. The new car is slightly shorter than the one it replaces, but thanks to some clever interior packaging, it offers a wider and more spacious cabin with more storage spaces. two engine options are on offer – a 2.0-litre petrol and a 185bhp 2.4-litre petrol, mated to a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic gearbox. The carmaker claims to have tweaked both engines for better fuel economy and performance. The smaller motor will be offered with a six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic. 6. It was announced in December that Chrysler will be entering India with the Jeep brand. And now here we have a scoop picture of the Jeep models which are slated to be launched in India. This pic was taken by an Autocar India reader. The first Jeep product to hit our shores will be the iconic Wrangler. The Jeep Wrangler made its debut in 1987 as the successor to the famous World War II Jeep, also known as Willys CJ (Civilian Jeep). The latest-generation Wrangler (code: JK), like the original CJ, uses front and rear live-axles. Fiat is testing the short as well as the long wheelbase versions, and is likely to launch both in India. The Jeep Wrangler arriving here is expected to be powered by a 2.8-litre common-rail diesel engine that’s good for 197bhp. The next Jeep model seen in the spy picture is the Grand Cherokee. Codenamed WK2, this is the fourth-gen Grand Cherokee, powered by a 3.0-litre common-rail diesel that makes 237bhp and is a proper luxury SUV. The Grand Cherokee was recently given a facelift that included some cosmetic as well as mechanical upgrades such as an 8-speed gearbox. Although this looks like the pre-facelift version, we expect Jeep to launch the updated model in India. The Grand Cherokee is based on the Mercedes-Benz M-class – it is thoroughly modern and promises to offer superb off-road ability with plush, comfortable interiors. Initially, both the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee will be offered as CBUs. Chrysler has already set up an R&D centre in Chennai that houses about 1,000 employees and is the third-largest Chrysler R&D facility worldwide.

While petrol variants are priced from Rs 4.99 - 6.41 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the diesel variants are on offer from Rs 6.29 - 7.51 lakh. The Sail saloon is the second model in India from the GM-SAIC joint venture. The Sail saloon is powered by a 79bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel motor. The diesel motor comes mated to the F17 gearbox whose ratios are tuned specifically for India. The company's claimed fuel efficiency figures are 18.2kpl for the petrol and 22.1kpl for the diesel motor. The base trim-level comes with power steering, front power windows, power mirrors, tilt steering, a digital tachometer, engine immobilizer and a 12V power outlet. 8. Looks like the hatch market will see another addition soon South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor will be launching an all-new compact car in India to take on Maruti Suzuki's Ritz and Swift, Codenamed BA, the new small car will come in its highly accepted fluidic design language and will be positioned between i10 and i20, as against the notion that it will replace the i10. Four people close to the developmentsaid that the new car will co-exist with the i10 in India and will be powered by a 1.1-litre diesel engine and 1.2-litre petrol engine. The project has been developed out of South Korea and over 100 Indian engineers have visited the R&D centre to work on this project. The car is currently undergoing testing in South Korea and is likely to hit the market just ahead of the festive season this year. The new small car is expected to have peak annual volumes of 1.5 lakh units within two years. 9. Made by South Louisiana-based Marine Turbine Technologies (MTT), the Y2K has nothing less than a Rolls-Royce Allison 250-series gas turbine engine, usually found in, erm, helicopters. Unleashed on the world way back in 2000, the original Y2K hyperbike, the yellow one in the inset, had a 320-horsepower engine that, the brochure claims, made peak power at no less than 54,000rpm (compressor speed) and churned out more torque than a Lamborghini Gallardo. All in a motorcycle that weighed 30kg less than a Hayabusa! It even had 200-section rear tyres mounted on carbon-fibre wheels. Performance, as you might have already guessed, was off the charts. In the time it takes a Veyron to do 180kph, the Y2K would do 320kph (5.4sec, and we’re wondering how the rider hung on!) and top speed was an eye-watering 402kph. Then, since that absurd top speed and 320bhp simply wasn’t enough for everybody, MTT introduced a 420bhp version called the Y2K Streetfighter. This one had a larger swingarm, wider 240-section rear tyres, bigger fuel tank and an enhanced cooling system. Cut to the present and MTT is working on the red bike you see. Due for its launch in the United Kingdom in mid-2013, it’s the latest version of the Y2K that uses a Rolls-Royce 250 C-20B gas turbine engine rated to 420bhp and a claimed, if yet unproven, top speed of 440kph. It is currently undergoing wind-tunnel testing in the UK to determine what changes should be made to allow the bike to run at such speeds without, you know, taking off. The best bit is that MTT is currently thinking of selling it in India. It has, in fact, imported one example of the Y2K here via its distributor, Viva Motorsports, to gauge Indian interest. It will be on display at The India Bike Week in Goa on the 2nd and 3rd of February 2013, so us mere mortals can eyeball it and hopefully hear its fighter-jet-like exhaust note as well. As for the money, the Y2K retails for Rs 1 crore in the US of A, so expect it to cost roughly twice that if and when it comes to India. The Y2k was recently showcased at the Parx and Autocar Supercar Show in Mumbai. Here is a video of the startup at the show
  10. Here are pictures of the new Mercedes GL (codename X166) being tested in India sent by a reader of Autocar India As seen from the pictures, the GL spotted is the GL 350 BlueTEC diesel version. The distinct front bumper and additional trim-bits on the exterior point it to be as an AMG sport version of the GL. The AMG Sport package consists of 21-inch alloy wheels, perforated 19 inch disc brakes, custom front and rare AMG bumpers, flared wheel-arch extensions and illuminated running boards. The GL 350 BlueTEC is powered by a 2987cc turbo-common rail diesel motor which is good for 255bhp and 63.2kgm of torque mated to a 7-speed G-Tronic automatic gearbox. Initially, all GL will be imported as completely built units. Like the smaller M-Class, Mercedes plans to assemble the GL in India from SKD kits imported from the USA by end of this year.
  11. Jaguar has launched the XF with a 2.2 four cylinder diesel engine putting out 187 bhp. The XF is now being assembled at the Chakan plant in Pune where the Freelander is also assembled making it the second JLR product to see local assembly. Looks wise the distinguishing factors from the 3.0 litre model is the single exhaust pipe and the absence of the 'S' badge on the boot. But it does get a lot of goodies like satellite navigation and a switch that allows rear passengers to slide the front passenger seat back and forth. Other small but significant additions to an equipment list that also includes a reverse camera, dual-zone climate control, paddle-shifters, keyless go, a sunroof, Bluetooth connectivity and USB and aux-in ports. The XF 2.2 is available at a price of Rs. 44.5 lakhs (Ex Showroom Mumbai) Read Autocar India's review on the 2.2 XF here http://www.autocarindia.com/Review/269350,new-jaguar-xf-22-diesel-review-test-drive.aspx/1
  12. Audi today launched the facelifted model of its R8 in India at a price of Rs 1.34 crore (Ex showroom Delhi) for the V8 variant. It will also be available in as a V10. The V10 which is Lamborghini sourced puts out 518 bhp. The single biggest change to the R8 is the gearbox; the single-clutch robotised manual of old has been replaced by a dual-clutch unit. Developed specifically for the R8, the wet twin-clutch unit helps cut the 0-100kph time down by almost half a second, the ton now coming up in a claimed 3.8 seconds. And the top speed is 311kph. With the facelift, Audi has launched a new ‘Plus’ version of the R8 V10 coupé. It uses ultra-light forged wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes, which alone save 2kg. The front splitter is made of light carbon fibre, as are the rear diffuser and the R8’s trademark side blades. It all adds up to shave 50kg off the kerb weight of the standard R8 V10. The engine bay is lined with carbon fibre too, and that jewel of a motor now develops 542bhp. That means it’s finally on par with Lamborghini’s entry-level Gallardo LP550-2. And that is very good news. Here is a link to Autocar India's review http://www.autocarindia.com/Review/329354,audi-r8-facelift-review-test-drive.aspx
  13. Supercars are coming into India quick and how. Just after the global launch, Lamborghini is all set to launch the Aventador Roadster in India on the 25th of January 2013. The Roadster will be similar to the coupe except for a few changes. the rear pillar has been redesigned to offer total support for the removable roof and a new engine hood that features a central "spinal column" with two pairs of hexagonal windows connected at the sides. The new Aventador Roadster is being offered with a two-piece roof made entirely from carbon fiber that can be stored in the front luggage compartment. Rest of the madness remains the same Stay tuned to this thread for more details, prices and pictures.
  14. According to reports, Swedish luxury car maker said it is conducting a feasibility study on setting up car manufacturing facilities in emerging economies, including India, as it targets to nearly double its global sales to 800,000 units by 2020 from present 440,000 units. 15. I have always loved the Duster for its macho and butch looks. And I think it has awesome street presence as well. But I always wished that it came with 4x4 to go with the looks. Looks like things might changed. Renault is looking to launch the 4x4 Duster in India next year in March. Renault apparently exports the Duster from India under the Dacia name. The 4x4 is said to come in only the 110 bhp avtaar and a 6 speed manual tranny. The 4×4 system on the Renault Duster is a selectable system with a knob on the dashboard, just below the AC controls, to the left of the gear lever, allowing the driver to switch between two-wheel drive (2WD), automatic four-wheel drive (where the Duster decides when to transfer power to the rear wheels depending on wheel slip and traction conditions) and 4×4 lock mode – where the Duster can be locked in 4×4 mode for off-road use on sand and snow. 16. Im super thrilled that the Jeep brand is coming to India soon. I remember the time when way back in 1993 the Cherokee was supposed to enter the country through Mahindra. I still dont know why that didnt work out. Now its coming for sure with the Jeep and Chrysler brands now owned by Fiat. But I do have my concerns. Fiat makes great cars but their After Sales Service and Spares network has a bad reputation. Thats the reason for the dismal sale of Fiat products in India. I just hope this is not the case when these two American brands are launched here. Fiat have a lot of work to do on that front. Do you think the launch of Jeep and Chrysler will change Fiats fortunes in India? Will owners get good service? I think only time will . But I cant wait to see the Grand Cherokee officially sold here What do you guys think?
  17. Iveco, trucking arm of Fiat Group is all seraching it's way to the Indian truck market, which abounds with local and global manufacturers who have been surging ahead with new and high performance models. India is the fourth largest truck market in the world and is all set to overtake even the United States which is currently in third position. Many foreign truck manufactures have entered the Indian markets in the past five years. MAN, Scania, Foton and Volvo have all brought in their models into the country and even set up exclusive dealerships and service centers to cater to the needs of local buyers. Iveco, of the Italian Fiat Group is all set to enter India along with a local partner. It is rumored that Iveco has been holding rounds of talks with major truck companies in India along with Tata Motors. Iveco was also in partnership in the country providing technical support for Ashok Leyland in which they held a 15% share which they later sold to Hinduja Group in 2006 for Rs.600 crores. Progress for Iveco has been slow. The company has been in talks with Tata Motors since 2007 and is still trying to make its way into Indian markets, which is seeing increased growth in the past few years. Future growth to the tune of 8% to 10% is predicted with sales reaching well over the 3 lakh unit per annum mark which is why major trucking companies are heading in this direction.
  18. The Maruti D'zire has enjoyed super success in the Indian market. The Maruti brand name, a very fuel efficient diesel engine and stellar after sales service makes it unbeatable. But things could change with the Honda Amaze on the horizon. A sub 4 metre sedan based on the Brio with a diesel engine, Hondas first for India will take the fight directly to the Dzire. All Honda needs to do is price it right. Word is that there will be heavy localisation from day 1 itself and being sub 4 metre will get the Amaze added benefits too. Should Maruti be a worried lot? Will the Amaze be the car that will be a game changer for Honda ? What do you think? Read Honda Amaze review here Read Swift Dzire review here
  19. After Tata Motors picking up JLR few years ago, another iconic British marque may also come under India ownership. According to news on bloomberg.com, Aston Martin’s controlling shareholder, Investment Dar Co., has approached potential buyers for the maker of luxury sports cars featured in James Bond movies, said five people with knowledge of the matter. The Kuwaiti company, which owns 64 percent of Gaydon, U.K.- based Aston Martin, has hired Rothschild to advise on the sale, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (MM), the Indian automaker, is among potential suitors Investment Dar has approached in recent few months, two of the people said. 21. Honda has given a teaser of it upcoming Brio based sedan (Black car) . This car is said to hit the Indian market in 2013 and will be powered by a 1.5 litre diesel engine. It is also said that it will be a sub 4 meter sedan which will give it excise benefits. Honda seems to have a winner on its hands and this has everything to become the king of its segment. And atlast from the teaser pic it seems to be a decent looker as well Question is is this car the ace up Honda's sleeve which can turn out to be a Dzire , Verito and Indigo CS killer? With a right price I feel so Last pic credit and source: IndianAutosBlog
  22. Hyundai is looking to get the new Santa Fe to India by 2013. It will be powered by a 2.2 litre diesel motor with 194 bhp on tap. Internationally, two versions of the new Santa Fe exist. There’s the normal 4689mm (2700mm wheelbase) version for markets where urban agility is more important, and a long, 4905mm (2800mm wheelbase) version that replaces the Veracruz in the USA. Despite our infatuation with imposing road presence and acres of cabin space when it comes to SUVs, we are likely to get the shorter version, currently being produced in the USA. This is the third gen Santa Fe and also carries the Fludic Design philosophy seen in other Hyundai models on our roads. However it gets its own design dialect called 'Storm Edge' Hyundai will be looking to price the new Santa Fe between Rs. 24 to 25 lakhs. Things seem to be hotting up in the premium SUV market with many players joining the game. This is only good news for the customer who will get spoilt for choice.
  23. Here are scoop pics of the Nissan Urvan caught testing in Chennai sent to us by an Autocar India reader . Looks like we might see a launch soon. The Urvan is sold as commercial cargo mover as well as micro bus with seating configurations from 8 seater to 14 seater in Asian markets. In the Philippines, the Urvan comes with a 3.0 litre 4 cylinder diesel engine putting out 105 horsepower and 209 Nm of torque. Lets see what engine comes to India.
  24. Mercedes launched a new variant of its new ML SUV, the 250CDi for Rs. 46.5 lakhs Ex showroom Delhi. This makes it cheaper than the 350 by around Rs. 10.4 lakhs. This makes it go directly against the X3 from BMW and Audi's Q5. Mercedes has lost out big time against its rivals in recent times. Can this new variant grab a slice of the big German pie? Whats your pick of the three SUVs?
  25. Toyota recently held a boot camp Delhi for Fortuner owners.
