  1. The Duster has got Renault great success in the Indian market. So now they are thinking of launching an MPV from the Dacia portfolio, the Lodgy. This 7-seat, three row MPV would be a direct competitor of the Maruti Ertiga, the compact MPV which has opened up an all-new segment in the Indian market. It could be launched here in 2014. The Lodgy would relatively be easy to manufacture in India as it borrows a lot of its mechanicals from the Duster. It will be powered by the venerable Renault 1.5 diesel K9K that is now the staple engine for most Renault-Nissan products in India. However, keeping the practical characteristics of the Lodgy in mind, Renault is likely to offer just the 84bhp version of the K9K motor, which would be less expensive and more fuel efficient than the 110bhp option that comes in the Duster. The Duster’s 1.6 petrol engine is likely to power the entry level Lodgy. If it is priced between 7 to 10 lakh rupees, Renault will have another winner on its hands in India.
  2. Volvo has confirmed its new V40 Cross Country will make it to Indian shores by March 2013. This new contender in the premium crossover/soft-roader market will compete with the likes of the BMW X1 and Mercedes B-class. In my opinion it looks the best of the lot.   3. So finally Volkswagen has finally confirmed that they will introduce a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder diesel engine in the Polo but dont rejoice just yet. This will happen not before 2014. Two years to go. What do you think this car will be priced at? Pricing is definitely going to be crucial for this version of the Polo to succeed. Opinions?
  4. A Gearheads.in member ‘Mr Ace’ has brought forward images of the Honda Brio Automatic caught in what appears to be a stockyard. Considering the AT box is caught on a model with alloys and fog lamps, there is a very good chance that it will be only offered on a top-of-line variant. The Honda Brio is already offered with a 4-speed CVT in Thailand and Indonesia. We are expecting the same unit to hit the Indian shores. The Honda Brio AT will compete against the automatic variants of A Star and Hyundai i10. It will be priced at around Rs. 60,000 more than the manual version. (Gearheads.in/IAB)
  5. The Aveo U-VA never really took off when it was launched. It was a very ordinary car with dull interiors and poor plastics. Wasnt fun to drive either so eventually it failed to gather a good sales figure for GM in India. Now Chevy is back in a second innings with an all new hatchback the Sail U-VA. (The 'Sail' name reminds one of the Opel Corsa hatchback) It is actually going to be the first locally produced and re engineered for India Chinese car. From the pictures, the looks are not very modern or new age . It looks just like an ordinary hatch. The same can be said about the interiors. However the Sail is going to come with the option of a diesel engine which was missed in the Aveo U-VA. No prizes for guessing what powerplant it will use. Yes, its our National engine the Fiat 1.3 MJD. The petrol will have a 1.2 liter unit. With competitors like the Swift, Figo, Liva and the Micra, the Sail will surely have its work cut out. Do you think the Sail hatch will bring in the volumes for Chevrolet, something which the predecessor couldnt? Or will it turn out to be another sales dud?
  6. After huge hype including showcasing the car at showrooms and at the Buddh International Circuit, Mercedes has finally launched the cheapest Mercedes in their range in India. The B Class. It is the first Merc to be based on a new front wheel drive platform (MFA). The B will be sold as the B180 in petrol only and will be available in two variants: B180 : Rs 21.49 lakhs B180 Sport: Rs 24.87 lakhs (All prices Ex Showroom Delhi) The Sport in addition gets 17 inch alloys, chrome slats on the grille, twin pipe exhausts, sporty pedals, sporty leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel and bi-Xenon lamps. The B Class' direct competitors will be the BMW X1 and the Q3. The advantage the latter two have is that they come with diesel motors while the B come with only a petrol. It was a high revving Sunday for Mumbai as the finale of the week long Vodafone Speedfest took place at the BKC in Mumbai. 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton took to the streets in his Mclaren Mercedes F1 car and treated enthusiasts by doing what he does best. Going fast. This is the 5th time that Lewis is visiting India. The evening started off with a parade with dancers and jugglers brought down especially for the show. Hosts for the evening Manish Paul and Mandira Bedi interacted with the crowd till the sun set. The best part about this event was that it was an F1 run under the lights and to make it even more exciting the rain gods also played a part by showering rain just before the start of Lewis run. The flag off was done by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and PWD Minister Chagan Bhujbal. The screamed and shouted as Lewis started off with his runs on intermediate tyres. Though he really didnt go as flat out as he would have liked he entertained the crowd by doing 360 degree donut much to the awe of the viewing public. Later he took some contest winners for a spin in the Mercedes C63 AMG . He also did a round of the whole venue in a truck interacting with the crowd and giving out merchandise. And to please everyone a little more, he did one final run in the Mclaren before saying goodbye this time on slick dry weather tyres. Overall it was a good event and its not everyday that you get to see something like this. I feel more and more F1 teams should look at doing road shows like this considering we now have an Indian GP and F1 awareness has grown leaps and bounds.   8. Mercedes’ new baby-CLS, which will could be called the CLA, has been for the first time caught completely undisguised. This new car is based on the Mercedes Concept Style Coupe (CSC) which was unveiled earlier this year at the Beijing motor show; it is tipped to go into production in 2013. It evolves the look of the F800 concept from 2010, which has led the way for Mercedes' latest design direction. The new CLA uses Mercedes' new MFA platform and has been seen so far on the A-class and B-class. Also planned to come off this platform is a small SUV called GLC, and a shooting brake version of the CLA. Power is said to come from the same turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that appeared in the new A-Class at the Geneva motor show in March. It produces 208bhp.   9. The soon to be launched Quanto from Mahindra has created quite a huge buzz right from the time the first test mules appeared to the more recent undisguised photos. Mahindra is looking at opening up a whole new segment with this launch. There has been a lot of speculation on the price and if at all it is a true 7 seater. Coming back to the point.   10. There have been very few rivalries in the automotive world as that between the two Italian giants from Santa Agata and Maranello respectively. Yes of course Im talking about Lamborghini and Ferrari. The cars from these two marques have been the object of desire of many a young boy, yours truly included. And there is no better way to start a weekend if you get to play with something from the Prancing Horse and the Raging Bull stables. Here I was in the wee hours of a Saturday morning waking up Mumbai city to the tune of a 1000 plus horsepower. What followed was a couple of hours of madness and my toys were Lamborghini’s race car for the road, the Super Trofeo Stradale and Ferrari’s 458 Italia which is today called by most as the best sports car in the world. The Gallardo has been around for almost 10 years now and has seen many models upgrades and limited editions. The Super Trofeo Stradale is the road going version of the race car which runs in the racing series bearing the same name in Europe called the Blancpain Super Trofeo. The huge rear spoiler is the first indication of what this car is about. The body has a light weight construction using aluminum and carbon fibre. Weight reduction is evident with the carbon fibre mirrors and diffuser. Even the engine cover is made out of carbon composite material and is completely removable and comes with a quick release system. The STS comes with light weight 19 inch alloys and while “Rosso Mars” red is the definitive paint for this car, the one I drove was painted in “Bianco Monocerus”. The Super Trofeo Stradale is 70 kg lighter than a standard LP560-4 Gallardo .On the other hand, the 458 is a completely new design from scratch by Ferrari. Styled by Pininfarina the new car does not have any styling similarities to the F430. A completely new design right out of the box, the 458’s looks seem to be showcase the Ferrari design philosophy for the next era. Gone is the smiling look of the F430 and in its place the 458 comes with an aggressive and angry looking stance. There are two flexible wings in the front bumper one on each side. When the car is going fast, these wings lower automatically allowing more air to flow from beneath the car giving it more downforce. There is also an air vent each next to each headlight but they are not there just for cosmetic reasons. According to Ferrari, there is a lot of high air pressure generated in the wheel wells when the car is going fast. These air vents allow the air from the wheel wells to flow out from above the car pushing it to the ground. The twin circular tail lights are replaced by a single round unit on each side. Unlike other previous Ferraris, the Italia gets triple pipe exhausts which are mounted right at the centre of the rear in between the rear diffuser. The classic glass engine bay cover revealing the glorious V8 remains unchanged from the F430. The interiors of the Stradale although similar to that of a normal Gallardo has seen some weight loss too. The inside door pads are complete carbon fibre with a leather strap taking the place of the regular door handle. Lamborghini has a used a combination of red and black Alcantara for doing up the upholstery in the STS. The steering wheel is gets black suede with red stitching. The steering really has a nice touch feel to it. Lambo has equipped the car with full racing seats also done up in Alcantara. A fire extinguisher finds a place behind the seats. Other bits on the STS can also be ordered in carbon fibre. Coming to the Ferrari, the interior is unlike any other you’ve seen before. The dash has been sculpted like a cockpit. The instrument cluster houses the big prominent tacho right in the centre. This can be ordered in any colour you like. The gear indicator display is also located in the tacho. 2 TFT screens one on either side of the tacho complete the layout. The right TFT screen shows a virtual analog speedometer, navigation and in car entertainment functions, while the left screen displays various info about the car like the temperature, fuel, and the mode your car is running in. A digital speedo is also displayed in the left TFT. The steering wheel of the Italia is a revelation and Im sure this pattern will make its way to the other Ferraris as well. Ferrari has done away with the stalks for the windshield wipers and the indicators. Instead, they have been incorporated on the steering wheel itself. The gear shift paddles are also more bigger in the 458. The horn buttons have been integrated into the top half of the steering wheel. That way, you can use the horn without having to let go of the steering. The indicator buttons on the steering feel convenient to use because of their placement. Just a light touch is all you need. The steering wheel also has the button for suspension settings, the Manettino (or drive mode control switch) and the engine start button. As an optional extra for a few more bucks, Ferrari can give you Engine RPM LEDs on you steering wheel too for the complete F1 experience The mid mounted monsterous naturally aspirated V10 on the STS pumps out 570 horses at 8000 rpm. Max torque figured stand at 540 Nm at 6500 rpm. With the kind of weight loss on the STS, you can be assured of insane performance. The STS flies hits the 100 mark in 3.4 seconds and goes on to do a top whack of 320 kph. Lamborghini’s 6 speed E-gear with paddles is standard. While it is pretty smooth are low and normal speeds, as you go onto higher speeds. So what about the Ferrari? The 458 comes with a 4.5 litre V8 unit. Extremely high revving, it produces 562 horses @ a staggering 9000 rpm !!! Peak torque of 540 Nm is achieved at 6000 rpm. The Italia has a 7 Speed dual clutch gearbox developed by Getrag. The presence of two clutches works wonders in the shifting department. Even in the auto mode you don’t experience any lag. All you need to do keep the throttle pedal pressed and the tranny does the gear changes in milliseconds before you can even blink an eye. No jerks at all. The old F430 did have slight jerks between gear changes. The 458 box is easily the best I have experienced in any of the super cars Ive driven so far. The 458 does the 0 to 100 kph dash in 3.4 seconds, quarter mile in 11.3 seconds and has a mind boggling top speed of 325 kph. The top whack in the Lamborghini STS is 320 kph but theres hardly a chance you would get to experience those speeds anywhere in Munbai city. The ride quality in he 458 is simply outstanding for a super car. The car’s suspension settings are fantastic. In comfort and sport mode there is none of the stiffness you would other wise experience in such a car. The 458 takes uneven roads very well making it hard to believe that it is riding on 20 inch wheels. This is an area where the Lamborghini falters . The ride is so hard that it hurts your vertebra every time you go over a bad patch of road. As if the violent gear changes weren’t enough. Both the Lambo and Ferrari come with optional Front Lift suspension which makes going over the torturous speed breakers a piece of cake. To summarize, there is very little to choose between these two beasts honestly. Both have their pros and cons. While the Ferrari feels built to perfection, the Lambo gives you that thrill and feel of raw power. Where the Ferrari has its share of complicated electronics, the baby Lambo is fairly easy to operate. But at the end of the day, I feel the Horse edges out the Bull for overall being a brilliant package altogether but at the same time it is more expensive than its nemesis. The replacement for the Gallardo is surely worth waiting for. As for me, all I can say is that it was indeed one of the best ways I could have spent a weekend. But the lust to drive a Ferrari F355 still remains.

  12. Renault has launched the Duster SUV. The India-bound Duster is slightly different from the one that was showcased at the Auto Expo earlier this year. The India-spec SUV’s lower-part front bumper gets a black finish, as opposed to the body-coloured one seen earlier. The wing mirrors are part-black, part-body-coloured, while the car seen at the Expo had a part-chrome, part-body-coloured setup. Other trim bits such as the headlights, grille and alloys are the same. The Duster comes in eight trims and three engine options, which include a base 1.6-litre petrol at a starting price of Rs 7.19 lakh, and the 1.5-litre diesel that currently powers the Fluence. The diesel engine is available in two states of tune — an entry-level 84bhp version and a top of the line 108.5bhp variant. The 108.5bhp motor is the ‘Step 4’ version of the K9K engine. The base RXE petrol variant is priced at Rs 7.19 lakh while the up-market RXL petrol costs Rs 8.19 lakh.   13. Audi has already overtaken Mercedes in the Indian market and is currently second to BMW. The recently launched Audi Q3 has been a run away hit with 500 cars being sold. It looks like a proper SUV as compared to the X1 which looks more like a 3 Series station Wagon. Do you think the Q3 will catapult Audi to the Nummer Eins spot in India? Or does BMW have an ace up its sleeve with the upcoming new 3 Series sedan? Lets have your opinions
  14. Hitesh Kalra, a reader of Autocar India sent in this picture to us. This is the Ford Fiesta Hatch and was spotted by him at Delhi Airport. Looks much better than the sedan in my opinion. Would make a nice premium hatch if Ford would launch this in India. Even the wheels look like 17 inchers. For sure this is a better looker than the sedan. What do you think? Would something like this sell considering the Optra SRV didnt find too many takers?
  15. Chevrolet has launched the new Captiva with a facelift and a new engine as well starting at Rs. 18.74 lakhs. However the new 2.2 litre 186.5 bhp diesel will be available on the AWD Automatic only and that comes at Rs. 24.59 lakhs Ex Showroom Delhi. I have always liked the Captiva as a car but somehow I feel this new one is a tad overpriced. Cant wait to try it out though. What do you guys feel? Will the new Captiva work at this price?
