The original Sumo was a big hit with private buyers and the yellow plate market alike. It was one of Tata's best seller by far. But the same cannot be said of the Grande which didnt sell that much and was outdone by better products from rival companies. Now Tata Motors is set to give the Sumo Grand a makeover and design cues are said to be coming from the new Range Rover / Land Rover SUVs. Things will remain same under the hood, the 2.2 Liter DICOR turbo diesel engine with the variable geometry turbo charger will be retained, along with the rear wheel drive layout that the current version of the Grande comes with. It is also said that all of Tatas products will take engineering inputs from LR which I think is a way in the right direction. Here are some design sketches of the Sumo Grande facelift Source: indiancarbikes.in
The gorgeous Evoque may have stolen its thunder but the new freshened up Freelander 2 takes care of that to some extent. The new Freelander 2 has new colours, exterior design features, upgraded equipment levels. The exterior design details have been revamped including a more contemporary lights front and rear using the LED technology and a new signature graphic in the front running lights. The XS model gains all-new 17-inch alloy wheels and an enhanced bodystyling pack. The new colours are Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue. The grille and fog lamp bezels now sport a bright finish and there are paint detailing changes to the front grille surround, insert bars and fender vent to harmonise the different elements. The interiors see the bigger changes including a brand new centre console. A new instrument cluster with a 5-inch screen displaying primary vehicle-related information, such as temperature and fuel levels, gear positions and Terrain Response mode, now sits between the dials across the Freelander model range, complemented with steering wheel toggle switches to operate the clearest of drop down menus and vehicle set-up details. Cabin space and safety are improved with the introduction of an intelligent electric parking brake which adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. The system takes into account whether the brakes are hot or cold. If hot, the system 'wakes up' periodically to ensure clamping force is not lost as the brakes cool down. Despite being operated by a single switch, the electric parking brake may still be used as an emergency brake, automatically selecting the most stable braking method by employing skid prevention techniques. An additional safety feature ensures the brake cannot be released unless the driving seat is occupied. Another new feature for Land Rover Freelander 2 is rear view camera capability. The view from the back of the vehicle is displayed on the Infotainment screen with dynamic lines representing the boundaries of the vehicle and your predicted path as you reverse. The system also incorporates 'Hitch Assist', a graphic superimposed on the camera showing the position of the tow ball. Engine wise the petrol has been changed but has no relevance to the Indian market as the diesel is sold because diesel engines are of high importance in our market and though the petrol will be a good addition to the range do not have high hopes to get this engine in India. The new Freelander 2 will come next year as Land Rover has just launched the new Range Rover in our market and we expect this to come in the starting of the next financial year. When it comes to price do not expect a massive price change and Land Rover would like to keep it competitive as possible ro compete with the Audi Q3 and others. (Source : www.Gaadi.com)
Land Rover has embarked on a massive new model blitz that could more than double its annual sales by 2020. It is almost certainly the biggest investment that the UK car industry has ever seen. Land Rover’s future model line-up will fully cover the three main areas of the booming global SUV market — luxury, leisure and utility. According to Land Rover’s design director Gerry McGovern, the brand is set to expand all three of its model families. The plans include additional models for the Range Rover line-up, a new Defender family and a radical expansion of the Freelander range that will create four new ‘leisure’ SUVs during the next seven years. Land Rover sources refuse to estimate the potential size of the car-maker once the seven-year plan has been introduced. However, market data suggests the global SUV market will reach 22 million units by 2020. If, by radically expanding its line-up, Land Rover captured around three per cent of that market, it would be close to producing 600,000 vehicles annually. Land Rover is set to unveil the facelift Freelander at the upcoming Moscow Motor Show. These are the first pictures of the new car. The subtle exterior tweaks include new re-profiled front and rear lights that feature the latest in Xenon and LED technology. The grille also gets a new finish. The interior is where all the major changes are seen. The chief addition is an all-new centre console. This houses a new 7-inch touchscreen that incorporates the audio controls for the all-new Meridian audio system. This upmarket audio system will also be available in the all-new Range Rover. The dial of the Terrain Response system behind the gear lever is replaced by a series of switches, which also frees up additional storage space. The parking brake is now electrically operated. There is a new 5-inch colour screen that sits between the instrument dials in the instrument panel, while the docking station for the key has been replaced by a keyless go system, which allows the engine to be started as long as the key is present in the car. There is also the addition of a new Dynamic trim in some global markets. This new variant comes with 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, a bodykit and gloss black trim for exterior detailing. The Freelander’s engine range carries over unchanged from before, and will be powered by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel producing 148bhp (SD) and 187bhp (HSE). Hope to see JLR get this to India superquick. I assume it will be assembled at the Pune facility
