PrancingHorse posted a topic in Indian CarsMercedes has started to roll out the GL SUV from its plant at Chakan, Pune. India is the first plant to start local production of the GL outside the Mercedes SUV plant in Tuscaloosa in the USA. Mercedes first started operations in India in 1995 with the E Class. This was followed by the S Class, C Class and then the M Class. The GL is the fifth model from the Mercedes line up to be assembled locally. The GL350 CDI is powered by a V6 diesel motor producing 258 bhp @3600 rpm and torque of 619 Nm between 1600 – 2400rpm. It goes from 0 to 100 kph in 7.9 seconds and goes to a top speed of 220 kph. The GL comes with a 7 Gtronic Plus automatic gearbox. It is longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model.I attended this roll out event at the Mercedes Plant in Pune. PrancingHorse posted a topic in Indian CarsThe news is just in that Jaguar is launching a 2.0 litre EcoBoost petrol variant of its XJ luxo barge in India. Power will be around 237 bhp and price is said to be Rs. 1.16 crore ex Showroom Delhi which makes it 14 lakhs cheaper than the 3.0 V6 I think Jaguar should go the CKD way with this XJ variant because it still costs more than its rivals. Going CKD will bring down the price further and should be awesome if it came under the 1 crore mark Ex showroom. JLR already assembles the Freelander and XF 2.2 at Pune so this would be a good idea. Opinions?
PrancingHorse posted a topic in Indian BikesLooks like duty hike is prompting everyone to go the CKD route. Honda is the latest to join that club. Honda already sells the CB1000R, CBR1000RR Fireblade, VFR1200F and VT 1300 CX (Fury) in the Indian market, all of which are brought down via the CBU route. Just recently, the Indian government hiked duties on CBU motorcycles, resulting in these products getting even more expensive. Thus Honda is now planning to set up an assembly plant for its high-end motorcycles. Bringing bikes through the CKD route will result in prices dropping by a considerable amount, which will bring the big bike bream more closer to bike lovers and enthusiasts. Keep watching this space.
