Ambitious 2014 Maruti plans: 1.6 Multijet Diesel & Crossover on cards

With its own diesel engine family still under development and the need felt for more powerful engines for upcoming SUV models, Maruti Suzuki now plans to import Fiat's 1.6-litre 'multijet' diesel engine from Italy starting next year, sources told FE.

To be first offered with the new SX4 Crossover (CUV) when it is launched in early-2015, the new diesel engine will help the car market leader be more competitive especially in the entry utility vehicle (UV) segment where diesel engines account for over 80% of sales and rivals like Ford and Honda already have larger and more powerful engines available.

"The upcoming SX4 crossover, which has already been launched in Europe, will be available with both a 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engines in India. The first is already made here, so the plan is to initially import the 1.6-litre diesel engine from Fiat and if the volumes are significantly high, then locally manufacture it afterwards depending on the licence agreement with Fiat. This engine will later be introduced in other sedans and UVs as well," a source close to the development said. Incidentally, parent Suzuki already sources the same 1.6-litre diesel engine for the SX4 S-Cross model made its European plant in Hungary.

I think the move is sensible for both Fiat and Maruti since Fiat is going to launch the 1.6lt multijet in new linea but the volumes aren't justified for its sales but if the XL7 and new linea being tested are with 1.6 multijet then Fiat can manufacture it in their plant and supply maruti with the same engine which seems logical.

Seems like it is going to be good time buy plan until MSIL has its own engines. However, it would be worth waiting for to see how good customer response is going to be for a compact crossover which is priced near to 10L or beyond.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross likely to come with Peugeot sourced DV6 1.6 litre HDi Diesel engine in India:

Working to create out the diversity & uniqueness within product Portfolio, Maruti Suzuki likely seems to be ringing the bell of previous Diesel engine partner -Peugeot again.

Based on feedback & competition, for heavy & bigger upcoming cars its most likely that Maruti Suzuki is going to source the Diesel engine from its previous partner & for upcoming S-cross crossover they're likely to be coming up with 1.6 litre HDi/DV6 Common rail diesel engine to fight the rivals like Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Ford Ecosport & others.

An excerpt from source article says,

Maruti Suzuki showcased the SX4 S-Cross at the 2014 Auto Expo and this vehicle will be launched in the Indian market next year. This is a proper crossover unlike the Skoda Fabia Scout and Volkswagen Cross Polo. It has been widely speculated that the new S-Cross will feature a 1.6-litre diesel engine sourced from Fiat but now it is time to kill this rumour. It has been learnt that Maruti Suzuki has been testing the SX4 S-Cross with a 1.6-litre diesel engine sourced from Peugeot.

This engine has been jointly developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen and Ford and it is used by the latter in some of its vehicles too. This DV6 1.6-litre CRDI diesel engine is available in two states of tune – 90 HP FGT and 110 HP VGT. Since the SX4 Cross will be positioned as a premium vehicle, we can expect it to come with the 110 HP state of tune. The MINI Cooper Diesel is also powered by the same engine. The engine uses a relatively large turbocharger. The plumbing comes with big plastic covers and the intercooler carries a strange design.

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross scored a 5-star rating in Euro NCAP tests and it also comes with ALLGRIP technology.

For many reasons Maruti Suzuki is most probably skipping the FIAT based Multijet engine this time, as 1.6 Multijet which was rumored much to make entry in Suzuki S-cross crossover & All-new Ciaz sedan(SX4 replacement). Reason can be anything, maybe cost, engine performance, rights issue or anything else.

Lets see further for the final or official information to arrive for its complete details.
