Pics: Bullet proof Duster as an Army vehicle in Romania. Should the Indian Army get these?

Recommended Posts

Romania has converted and modified the Dacia Duster (Renault in India) to be used as an Army vehicle. the Duster military vehicle complies with NATO standards and with the Romanian Army’s transport necessities.

The vehicle is fitted with a series of special features including an armoring system, additional underbody protection for the engine, gearbox, fuel tank and rear differential, removable winch, anchoring system for air transport, capability to tow military trailers, “black out” and camouflaged lighting systems, plus exterior 12V and 24V sockets.

The most obvious feature is without a doubt the machine gun mounted on top of the car, on a roll cage-like structure. No details were offered about this feature, but it’s not hard to figure out what it’s for. We don’t know whether the engine accepted any modifications, but since the car is armored and heavier, extra output would be needed.

India has modified Scorpios which many of us have seen on the road. Should such modified Dusters be added to the fleet of the army? Here are the pics

The car looks great and macho!! But I don't think that a light weight platform is suitable for an armored vehicle per se. Also there must have been extensive modification to the 1.5 engine or may be they might have fit in a 2.0lt TDi in it.

Why would army invest in Duster when it get more offroad friendly Gypsy for around 5 lakhs. Duster is cheap to manufacturer but in India the pricing is on expensive side, also renault India still haven't given us 4WD powertrain which will be more expensive since most of the 4WD mechanical need to be imported.

You have valid points rssh but you know that Renault manufactures the 4x4 Duster at Chennai for export markets. Agree about the Gypsy but Im sure the army can get these at a a much lesser price than what it is sold for to us customers. About the weight Im sure there are heavy mods done before being put to army duty.

For an armored car Duster is not suitable the chassis need lots of strengthening to carry that additional weight, but army doesn't always needs armored cars they need a good off-road vehicle (like Trax) which have excellent credentials of ramp over angles and long suspension travel ,which car be hard to implement on Duster. For ferrying officers etc Duster is a fine vehicle but it ain't robust, the torsion rigidity of V platform is not so great (gypsy even less but its a ladder frame). Also the outer roll-cage on the picture shown above is mainly to support the automatic turret system since it cannot be mounted directly on the roof.

Scorpio chassis is already being used as armored vehicle in Mumbai atleast. I spoke to one of its driver and he said the power is around 150 bhp and it weight a lot, and delivers only 5-6kpl in city.
