Jeep engine modification from indirect to direct injection MD-2350

Mahindra MD 2350 diesel engine are low speed diesel engines debuted in 70s and 80s which have low power 38 bhp probably and low fuel efficiency of 8/9 kmpl in actual driving conditions. Here MD stood for mahindra diesel and 2350 was the top rpm of the engine. Probably the top speed was 70-75 kmph for the same engine.

Later on to improve fuel economy this was converted to direct injection engine which had no woes of starting as previous engine had issues with heat plugs and delivered a fair fuel efficiency of 16-18 kmpl as per my knowledge.

Here comes my question, i have heard that its possible to convert indirect injection older engine to direct injection engine by changing head and other equipment. does anybody have first hand experience at this?

If this is done there wont be problem with rto issues and insurance of vehicle as engine swap would change the engine number.and here the engine no. shall remain same.There is a big no. of such jeeps from 80s in harayana, rajasthan and uttar pradesh.

Mahindra fixed a simple turbo to DI engines to meet pollution norms. I have seen a plain turbo fixed with no inter-cooler but a thin pipe for lubrication. If the above is possible then maybe you can turbo charge it too.

This might give us a performance oriented modification with narrow escape from legal issues with modification by not violating renewal process of RCs and insurance too.

Yes you can convert IDI to TDI. They are easy to do because the stroke and bore are the same as the TDI. It is just a matter of swapping pistons and cylinder head plus a mechanical injection pump. But maybe price out all that stuff before you go crazy. Also a good mechanical TDI pump will cost about 60k approx.

But maybe price out all that stuff before you go crazy. Also a good mechanical TDI pump will cost about 60k approx.

Sure, the cost factor is the major determining factor and i completely agree with you. i will try doing some practical market research and make sure what it turns to be. i will also enlist the approximate quotation and if i go for this kind of thing then the actual costs incurred.

If that exceeds the cost of a a good engine swap then its not wise to do so. The only reason was to keep documentation non tempered . Thanks for posting. Always new creations are result of healthy discussions
