Ownership Review: Ford Classic 2014 - Moondust Silver

Another tank gulped at a decent 17.5 kmpl with AC...

Tanked up for Rs. 3000 (45.18 ltr) after a run of 790 kms. Not bad at all...

Just have a question here.

My first service is scheduled at 5000 kms in Aug. I've come to know that no oil change will happen at this service.

The oil change is scheduled at 10000 kms. Since this is the first oil that'll have a lot of iron particles and other impurities from the first run, is it advisable to keep this oil for 10000 kms or should it be changed now that I've run the car for like 2400 kms already?

Thats a awesome mileage you are getting neeraj, I am not so lucky I have done about 1000kms till date and I am not getting more than 13.5kmpl (with 70%AC) in city driving. I tanked up to the brim (48.3lts) and could drive only 640kms till the DTE showed 6kms to empty. Any idea why I am getting low mileage?

@HT, I got a 15.8 kmpl on the first tank which I was very disappointed with.

The fuel economy will improve when you use up your second tank.

BTW, my fuel efficiency figures are with 100% AC. I never roll down my windows.. and I do get frowns for not doing so :P

I'm expecting no less than 19 kmpl when the first oil change happens. Lets see...

Nice review. Keep it up and congratulations, you will be a father soon...

A friend is asking my suggestion on Fiesta classic petrol Titanium. This car was never on his list but the price point is just so attractive that he cannot write it off.

I just got a heart attack today, filled up my second full tank today upto the brim, drove it for 101kms exact and then refuelled again till the brim, it took 9.3 litres which makes a effective mileage of 10.8!! :o

frustrated and highly disappointed, I drive it normally and neve took it above 80 till now, any idea why so low mileage and is there anything I need to check?

@HT - are you sure your's is a diesel? :P

Jokes apart.. 10.8 to a liter is really bad even for a car which is supposed to run in completely.

If the car is mechanically perfect, it may be your driving style... try driving with a light foot.. and change gears within 2000 RPM.

Be spirited only if you need to be..

And anyway, the Classic's engine does not give you a thrust of power when you try to drive pedal to metal. So doing that every time for the fun of it will definitely use a lot of fuel.

Dear HT, I would suggest you don't go over 80kmph now as it's the running in period. Also change gear below 2000rpm. Try not to give extra pressure to the engine. Drive with a light foot as Neeraj said.

It'll increase gradually, be patient ;) Though it's a bit too low as of now.

I'm a little skeptical about the average fuel consumption of my car now... gives me a 17 - 17.5 kmpl with AC.. but i can give a benefit of doubt here .. its rainy season and I spend almost twice the amount of time in my car than usual to reach office and home everyday.. the traffic, i believe, has a major role to play.

I filled in Shell diesel this time.. thats a whopping Rs. 6 more to a liter that the regular one.

The good part I noticed - their fuel does not smell of kerosene. Also, i had almost emptied my tank before refuelling.. so will be able to understand what kind of average fuel consumption figure my car will return with a premium quality of fuel.

To start with, the car has become a lot smoother.. the engine noise has gone down already in the first 100 kms I've driven it.

I used shell for the first full tank after I purchased the car. Somehow I felt there is not much difference and the cost difference is definitely not worth it, though the engine felt a tad smoother.

And about my mileage figures, it has improved a lot, last time i got 720 kms for a full tank with 70% AC driving (fuel was normal diesel from indian oil)

And neeraj, how much kms do u clock on a full tank of fuel (include the DTE figure) and while fueling, do u fuel up to the auto cut off or fuel further and fill up to the brim?

Thanks Alex.

@ HT - I usually fill in regular diesel.. I refill the tank to its brim - beyond the auto cut-off.

My odometer reading at that time shows a DTE of ~100-140 kms and my trip meter shows ~750 kms done. 45-46 ltr is what it takes.

Getting a tank full range of ~850 kms overall - that is, if I run it dry.

The Shell fuel is not doing any good to the efficiency at least until now. Will observe until the next tank up. Even I have to refuel about 50-80 kms beyond what I usually do, I'll switch to Shell as I would at least be assured of good quality fuel. The extra Rs. 6 will make sense only then.

I really feel a little low right now when I came to know that the facelift Fiesta base variant.. which is just shy of the music system and alloys but comes with a driver's side airbag and ABS with all other functions the same - is just about 50k more than the car what I paid for...

My current expressions are something like this.. <_<:(:o:wacko:

I just verified the amount of fuel I have consumed for the number of kilometers on my odo.

My odo reads 3556 kms now which has gulped down 4 full tanks and the fifth tank just a little less than half consumed.

That gives me a staggering average consumption of 18 kms to a liter... not bad right!! ;)

Got my first service done... 0 bill.. those guys are not supposed to change anything though.. so not so much of a difference when the car was delivered to me.. cleaner.. thats it.

I had a couple complaints though - there was a strange cranking noise of the suspension (rear left) which got rectified to a great extent.. still not satisfied as the car makes that noise sometimes... not sure what that is.

And one of my organization's directors had come down for a visit to our Pune office. Took him out for lunch in my car... and the way he banged the door... it started making a consistent rattling noise.. turned out it was some rivet loose.. but got that sorted too...

Tanked up with Shell again. Paying 71.75 to a liter is a little too expensive.. but overall the car feels much smoother to drive.. it was confirmed by the Service Manager at Ford as well. He recommended me to use the same if I was okay to spend a little more.

@hari, I've already included my first service details here. And I will continue adding all details of expense spent on the car in the meanwhile.

For now, I tanked up at 860 kms earlier and 874 kms for about 45 ltr and 46.5 ltr. Thats an astonishing efficiency of 18.5 kmpl in city traffic - 100% AC.

Btw... crossed 6000 kms on the odo already - 5 months. Its a little less of driving to actually feel the benefits of diesel. But hey, my trips to the fuel station have gone down and so have my fuel bills.. so not complaining.

Adding an update after a long, long time... was tied up with work all along and my kid keeps me a lot busy too ;)

The Ford's done about just 14,500 kms till date.. that's just like a 1000 kms a month. The reason to this is my changed job which is now just about 3 kms from where I stay. It was 25 kms one way until Jan.

There are clearly no benefits of owning a diesel now for me. But I'm optimistic that a job change  or even long trips would make it worth.

So, I've done 2 servicing rounds so far. The first one absolutely free came up in Nov 2014. Just regular check-up and wheel balancing.

The second came in the month of May 2015. Paid one. But cost me around 2800/-

One thing I dislike about the car is that even though it has the same engine of the Figo, the service intervals are pegged at 6 months while Figo owners enjoy once a year ownership. When asked to the dealership about this, a very funny answer I got - "Sir, the Classic is used mostly for commercial purposes. Their monthly runs are way more than an average Figo owner would run in a quarter or even 6 months."

And what happens if I miss my scheduled service? Warranty voids!! Not so good considering its a Ford. So I have to stick to the intervals for 3 years! Yeah, I opted for the extended warranty too... what was I thinking! Had to pay 12k more for that

I like the way it swallows my kid's stroller and a good 2 full sized travel bags. There is enough room in the rear and front although under-thigh support could have been better.

Anyway, Ownership experience has been really good so far. No niggles, no issues with the car whatsoever.

My kid's about 10 months old now and we plan to do a road trip in Nov-Dec to maybe around Gujrat.

Regular runs to Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala and sister's in-laws Kolhapur keep happening.. and the fuel economy just astonishes you every time! How can a car be so frugal to give you about 20 kmpl all the time with maintenance so low! I know there are a lot many cars that can match this (Manza, Etios, Dzire etc.) But this one actually adds to the fun in terms of handling - family not in the car and I can't keep myself from pushing this car around the corners. Just brings a grin on my face.

Feels a little bad that I could not afford the latest sedan then.. it sure does look old in front of the new cars. Coarse diesel, doesn't sound that refined and power delivery is not as punchy as the any other modern diesel. But hey, it's not my last car. Not sad with this buy at all. And I feel good I opted for the Titanium variant with the airbags and ABS and other little gadgetry.

Hope to cover a lot many miles with this good workhorse. That's what everyone who owns one or has owned one calls it - a Workhorse.. :)
