Rains lash Mumbai; Help for stranded motorists

Buses go through

the low-lying area near Grant Road station, in Mumbai.

Heavy rains continued to lash Mumbai on Sunday for the second consecutive day causing water-logging in many areas.Most city dwellers chose not to step out with heavy rains being witnessed across the city.

There

was water-logging in many parts of the city. However, road traffic

remained largely unaffected due to a low number of vehicles on roads.

Services

on the suburban rail lines were also affected with trains running

late. But there has been no stoppage due to the rain yet, said the

railway police.

Relief for stranded motorists:

Motorists

stuck in traffic jams following heavy rains in the city may soon be

able to wheel their cars to strategic parking locations along arterial

routes and come back to claim them during calmer weather.

"We

have asked the police to finalise 20 such locations for vehicles, which

can be parked if the roads are clogged due to heavy rains," Chief

Secretary Johnny Joseph said.

The

plots for parking would be located on arterial routes like highways and

other important routes used by vehicular traffic and could be utilised

by private vehicle owners, he said.

Most

motor traffic movement in the city either exists in the north-south

corridors, between the suburbs to south Mumbai where most offices and

businesses are located, or between the eastern to western suburbs.

Joseph

said the idea of having such parking plots was thought of after the

deluge on July 26, 2005 when hundreds of motorists abandoned their

vehicles on highways due to water-logging, resulting in a lot of time

being spent in clearing roads clogged with parked vehicles.

"The

police will identify the plots and the access for the same will either

be provided by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) or the

authority in charge of the plot," Joseph said.

The

plots would be made available only during emergency circumstances and

not on a daily basis, as parking lots are in short supply in many parts

of the city.

The

motorists who park their cars would be expected to use public or other

private modes of transport to get to their destination.

Yours Truly's comments: The July 26, 2005 rains and flooding in the metropolis has given nightmares to many Mumbaikars.Lets hope the same is not repeated due to civic negligence and lackadaisical attitude of the city fathers. Other than playing with our lives, these flood waters simply play havoc with automobiles causing tremendous damage.

In my colony due to modernization work more parking space and elevation of garden to 4ft above road has made the dirt clog the gutters and we always have 3ft flood and my zen always get flooded .I was angr y so decide to off road it and parked it on the garden .Will post the picture tomorrow.

This must be more to do with drastic climatic changes...these torrential rains have become a regular feature in Mumbai, whereas in Chennai we are regularily starved of rains: monsoons have been regularily giving us the miss. Chennai is famous for its water scarcity...

When it rains in Mumbai, it pours

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai

throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning, bringing traffic to a

virtual standstill in many parts of the city.

According to the Regional Meteorological Department,

Colaba in South Mumbai recorded a heavy rainfall of 200 mm while

Santacruz (suburbs) recorded 142.9 mm.

Water logging up to one and a half feet was reported in Bandra, Sion, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Andheri and several low lying areas.

The Mumbai civic body's website, which authorities

had promised would display updated data on the rainfall and flooding

across the city, did not do so, leaving city residents to rely on the

media for information.Many schools stayed shut and students were sent

home. Some officegoers also preferred the comfort of their homes to

braving the journey to their workplaces.

Reminds us again and again of the dreaded July 26, 2005, when

rains virtually flooded the metro bringing  life 

to a standstill for a few days. I was told that Peter Mukherjea, then CEO Star TV was stranded near Bandra. He had to leave back his Toyota Landcruiser and wade through waist deep water. There were thousands of such cases.

Hmmm! now its a common site of my car getting water inside it , I can't help it ,though I am happy that my car doesnot have any electrical part getting damaged as central lockeing choked up 2 years ago and music system is always kept in my house , only thing that I am scared of is that if we buy a car with lots of accessories and it is stuck in this kind of water then all the money is washed. I couldn't post flooded pics of my car because if I did water will get inside the camera.

Its high time that BMC should put the water pumping system in place. The media reports suggests that the money for this has already been sanctioned. And this was only due to approx 170 of rainfall.. while mumbaikar's have witnessed even 800 rainfall.

it is the most disgusing city of Maharashtra. The BMC is the only reason for the city's decay.

They are just not been able to stay with the citys developement from 1970 till date. The never ending mass of people just keeps on piling with no headway in infrastructure what so every. The Worli bridge is just a picinic spot for people now.

Storm water drains end in to the sea, if the goddamn sea water enters these drains and the back pressure chokes up the drains what are the BMC's plans on alternate remedy, not a thing.

the water is bound to collect in low lying areas any retarded will know that, but not doing any thing to stop this problem is because the whole of BMC seems to be retarded by not having any concrete plans in place.

The situation was not so in the early 1980's even.

The haphazard growth of the city has made it a mess.

I could barely work in that city for 3 months, better off out of it.

Again Mumbai is in the news as heavy rains (03/07/2010) have affected normal life.The localities Hindmata, Dadar, Sion and Wadala are water logged.Trains in the Central and Western lines are running late.Road traffic was badly hit in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Eastern Express Highway and S.V. Road.

'Wade' ability quotient comes to the fore in Mumbai, come the monsoon season. Probably, I think SUV maker's can use this as a marketing tack. A photo of the Scorpio progressing amongst stranded cars must make a great USP for the vehicle.

True. But one must still be very careful if the road is not well known (given that bottomless pits, drains and dug up trenches are everywhere).

Like the Safari wading in that picture. I feel SUV's are really cool for such slushy roads and during monsoons.
