FuelRunGod 200 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 @dtandon: What is the source of this information? Because it doesn't have a variomatic transmission. FRG
dtandon 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 Its an article on the economic times website - the link is in my previous post (2n'd line) in bold. I think Tata's had announced that the nano would be a "variomatic" way back in 2008.
FuelRunGod 200 Report post Posted March 16, 2009 Well it hasn't transformed into reality, would have probably been too costly anyway. It is my view that Ratan Tata wanted a proper car, giving it a variomatic transmission would give a two wheeler somewhat compromised feel. It will feature a 4-speed manual transmission initially and rest assured, this one is worth waiting for. FRG

akj53in 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2009 Finally the Nano has started rolling off the production line from Tata Motor's Pantnagar factory. This is probably the most discussed and most awaited car in the world. Conceived and designed by Indians, brimming with new ideas and new technology, Nano is set to introduce a new auto segment altogether. Hats off to Mr. Ratan Tata for conceiving this car and his entire team of Tata Motors for bringing this to production stage, despite competitors and politicians combine did their best to kill the project. Now the Common Man carrying his 2 children and their mother on a scooter in pouring rain, will also get a chance to carry his family in comfort and safety. I congratulate all the Tata team including their vendors and wish all the best to Nano. akj53in2009-03-17 14:40:

anjan_c2007 1 Report post Posted March 17, 2009 Some tech specs and other details of the Nano (source Rediffnews) The Tata Nano will initially be available in three models -- the Nano (base model), the CX (mid-level model) and LX (top-end model). The cost of the base model will not exceed Rs 1 lakh (ex-factory). Booking forms will be available at SBI, Westside, Croma stores and, of course, 400-odd Tata Motors dealerships. Booking forms will be available for only 14 days. Nano merchandise, including Nano phones and watches, will be marketed through various outlets. To begin with, only the petrol engine version will beavailable. The 624-cc two-cylinder petrol engine with a single balancer shaft (to avoid excessive vibrations) will have four valves. It will develop 35 bhp at 5,500 rpm and 4.8 kgm of torque at 3,000 rpm. The Nano should crack 60 kph in eight seconds and will have a top speed of 105 kph. The Nano will be available in BS II and BS III variants. The Nano will weigh 600 kg without load. The Nano will have only one spare tyre and it can be usedto repair only the front tyres, since the rear tyre is of a different size. However, the car can be driven slowly even after a puncture (and should be repaired as soon as possible). The Nano will have four forward gears and one reverse gear. The Nano will have a 15-litre fuel tank. With an expectedmileage of slightly over 20 kpl, a full-tank will take you over 300 km. Only the driver's seat will be adjustable in the base model. The Nano CX model will have air conditioning with a heater. The LX model will have power windows, central locking and fog lamps. The Nano will come with a warranty of 18 months or 24,000 km(Subject to changes at the company's discretion)

anijog 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2009 It is amazing to see the detailing the Europa has got for it's europe launch, guess the europeans are a pampered lot. When will we receive such pampering, or rather when will car makers think that we also are of the same status like the GORAs. It goes to show that a Indian company also thinks that the Indian customer does not require pampering. I just hope that is not the case with Tata and they will provide the same interiors and finish as seen on the EUROPA, at least as a option. The car will come with CVT i understand, the CVT is being perfected by Kinetic motors Ltd, so bound to have the same rubberband effect with the Nano when driven. The Head lamp treatment on the Nano has really put it in a different league althogether, me think! The stictched effect of the seats and the door panels is wow, also the alloys, now to wait for a cracker of a HYBRID or ELECTRIC!!
sanzgod 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2009 Little Nano carries a big burden for Tata (Source : TOI) SANAND: What a difference a year makes. In early 2008, Tata Motors unveiled its Nano to a rapturous media reception as the snub-nosed, 4-seater with a Rs 100,000 ($1,945) price tag created a new category of super-cheap cars for the masses. Just weeks later, Tata Motors acquired the Jaguar and Land Rover brands for $2.3 billion from Ford Motor Co in a blaze of glory, and the company revelled in the global spotlight. But Tata, India's top vehicle maker, next week rolls out the Nano six months behind schedule, amid worries that an economic downturn and production constraints may spoil the success of the world's cheapest car. Since the Nano was first shown, the main production plant had to be moved following land protests, Tata Motors posted a first loss in seven years as sales slumped, and its shares have dropped 75 percent. On top of that, Tata Motors' credit rating was downgraded as its debt-fuelled expansion binge left it exposed to the financial crisis. "In the last 12 months, Tata has been hit by a perfect storm," said Ashvin Chotai, managing director at consultancy Intelligence Automotive Asia in London. "At the time, it was unimaginable that the venerable Tata would have difficulty tapping credit markets. But its resources became stretched from venturing out on so many fronts, and the slump in sales and tighter credit worsened the situation." A bridge loan of $2 billion is due in June, with Standard & Poors warning of another ratings downgrade because of the "extremely adverse" operating environment for Jaguar/Land Rover, Tata's ambitious capex plans and deteriorating cash flow. The high fuel and commodity costs that made the Nano imperative a year ago have faded somewhat, but its place in the history books is still secure, with a popular following that could rival the Beetle, Mini and Fiat 500, analysts say. "The Nano will still create a new segment, bridging the gap between motorbikes and entry-level cars, and it will still be the first of its kind," said Mohit Arora, a director at JD Power Asia-Pacific in Singapore. "Those fundamentals haven't changed."
