Cars which could have been a HIT!...

Ever wondered about some unique cars which just missed the attention they needed, just because they lacked some features.???

Like,

they lacked the outright engine power OR

they where not attractively styled. Outdated interiors OR

they dint have the large boot space OR

they dint have the seating comfort OR

....

These were cars which provided a unique solution, at great VFM. But were a failure due to lack of the competitive edge.

Lets make a thread which compiles all those unique cars and highlighting their unique abilities.  May be, some car designer will make it to good use.

Some examples:

- Maruti Versa (Suzuki every plus)

Pros: Versatile car, Easy to self drive, Seats >5 comfortably.

Cons: suspension, lacks the rock solid build quality, lacks the appeal

- Mahindra Bolero

Pros: Compact dimensions-7 seats, Easy city drive, tolerates abuse, solid build

Cons: Lacks power & refinement, uncomfortable seats, interiors look very basic

- Maruti Gypsy

Pros: Compact 4x4, versatile, tolerates abuse, Easy to drive anywhere

Cons: Old looks, lacks features.

We still see the Gypsy being used by the Indian Military and the Bolero by other Government departments, but there are very less in numbers. But Versa is surely a big flop. I think it is priced very heavily. The on-raod cost of Versa in Bangalore is approx 575000/-(Dual A/C) and 540000/- for the Single A/C and Non A/C costs 470000/-.

Its surely heavily priced. Who will shell out their money for a car which doesn't have the required features and moreover there are other cars available in the market with much better options.

i would like to add the palio also to that!

Palio is a good car until it runs well. If there is a problem later will have to struggle with the poor A.S.S of the Fiat. And for getting it repaired from other than the Company you will have to hunt for spares.

I think the Bolero his a hit.  It is among the top ten selling cars in the month of  February, 2009 (as per AutocarIndia) and the Maruti Gypsy has been around as long as the company has been so that is a good reason to call it a hit.  Only the Versa is the one that is a very slow seller but that is probably because it is vehicle that is neither here nor there.  But it seems to sell well as taxi vehicle in some of the cities of the country.

Please highlight the uniqueness of the cars you are listing.

Well, how many of you have seen a self driven Bolero???? It only a hit in taxi market, like the Omni. But there is no other car which is as compact, sturdy and 7 seater as the Bolero.

Versa is priced Rs. 5.3 lakhs on-road and is also having discounts. Omni has eaten away Versa sales. But versa is much better car than omni.

Gypsy. There is absolutely no competition for this one. Untill Fiat launches its 4x4 Fiat panda, which surely not gonna happen.  Or Ford fusion 4x4. Gypsy is not selling because of its old looks.

And...

I dont feel Baleno, Cedia and Matiz: have anything unique in them. We got similar cars like, Hyundai Accent, Optra, Alto/Santro resp.

Please, do highlight the uniqueness of those cars.

elantra's nose was its killer never understood how in  hell they thought the chrome horizontal grill will be appreciated and how will A-star come into this flock? when it recorded 3247 units just for the month of dec'08 taking it to top ten sales.

chevrolet optra srv

oooo...its a damn comfy car, looks sporty and upmarket and cool!

Let down by a fool's pricing

Daewoo Nexia was the most technologically advanced car in it's time

It had 2 airbags, abs, 16 valve dohc, climate control, auto box, integrated music system and many more creature comforts

I never came to know why this car flopped..........

@Archit- I think Palio was a hit. It did sell quite well in the beginning, so we cant say it could have been hit. Just that it boomed after 3 years.

To me : the Chevy Aveo, Optra , Baleno were quite capable cars. Somehow i fell Aveo should have sold more than todays nos.

@SH- A-Star was killed by Maruti itself- premium price tag along with cramped rear space.
