My ANHC SMT 1 month review

Recommended Posts

Hey guys , it had been a long time since I was yearning for a sedan. Was tired of driving my santro and zen the last couple of years , so finally thought of buying one this summer.

I eventually purchased the SMT (Habanero Red) in delhi which cost me 8.56L on road. Glad I purchased it a week before the 30k+ price hike.

have driven it close to 800kms in a month's time. got the first service done yesterday.

THE BIG DILEMMA

Choosing the right car ? Oh man this was probably the toughest part .

I finally shortlisted the fiesta/sx4/linea.

Since my annual running would have been close to 8-10K kms , so did'nt consider the diesel.

There is'nt a single winner amongst the top 4 cars. Every car had its good and bad points. Considering my priorities , the ANHC suited me the most and picked it over the rest due to the following facts :

Fiesta : Interior space least / Ford A.S.S.

SX4   : Everything about the car is decent. Does'nt excel in any department.

Linea  : 1.4l least fun to drive , average performance , A.S.S. , Resale.

EXTERIORS

Wow , I just love them (sorry if I am a bit biased , but then I am smitten).

The HONDA people have conceptualized the arrow shot form in this car.

The front looks very cool and futuristic. The fog lamps (which they did not providesmiley7.gif) would have surely enhanced the great looks.

Looks are a matter of personal taste and some people did not like the rear , but to me personally they look cool. The side stance is also very elegant.

INTERIORS

The steering wheel first - very cool indeed . Its lifted straight from the civic and its very chunky to hold. The steering mounted controls add to the convenience.

The speedometer looks very classy and is luminescent in the day. The real time mileage indicator helps you to judge your driving style.

The A.C. is effective and cools the big cabin in not much time.

(No A.C.C. - smiley7.gif , cost cutting again ).

There is also no C.D player smiley7.gif , currently the music to my ears comes from the 12 fm channels and my usb. the 4 door mounted speakers serve the purpose very well.

There are a lot of cubbyholes here and there to hold your knick knacks.

Now to the quality - disappointing. The plastics feel very cheap for a car of this segment and are comparable to my santro.

The quality of fabric is also nothing great to write about.

However , the two tone dash and the sweeping curvature makes it look good.

It is very spacious . The old city's wheelbase has been extended by a full 100 mm and the space liberated is thus evident. Also since the fuel tank is centrally mounted , it also liberates further space.

ENGINE

The 1.5L i-VTEC is a gem of an engine and needs to mention. Probably this is where i've paid half the moneysmiley36.gif.

Its the quickest in the segment and the drive is exhilirating. If you love perfromance , you will drool over this car.

All the cars in this segment offer engines with an output ranging between 85-100 bhp. But Honda has taken the game much forward and offered a 118 bhp ! now thats fun. Infact there is not much of a difference between the D segment cars like the civic/altis which belt out 130/132 bhp respectively.

I presume even the power to weight ratios will be almost comparable too.

(though not sure on this one)

MILEAGE

you would expect that a car with this big an engine would be the least frugal , but this is the department where HONDA excels. The i-VTEC offers a good blend of performance and economy. Prior to the 1st service , it returned me 10.6 kms/l with 100%ac in the delhi bumper to bumper traffic. It should improve to 11-11.5 after the service. Cant ask for more than this i guess !

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE CAR

Cool exteriors

Big interior space

Performance

Good FE

WHAT I HATE ABOUT THE CAR

Poor quality of plastics/fabric trim

Missing equipment - ACC / Alloys / Fog Lamps / CD Player

Poor G.C. ( Have scraped speedbreakers twicesmiley19.gif)

VERDICT

Inspite of all the shortcomings and being the least VFM , I still picked up this baby. The hassle free maintenace , the performance oriented i-VTEC engine , big interiors and good resale tilted my decision in the favour of the ANHC.

Will post the pics soon.

Congrats on your purchase.

I am also contemplating buying ANHC vs SX4. You have written that you scaped 2 speedbreakers. Was there any damage. Were they abnormally high speedbreakers. I travel to some remote areas occasionally and am concerned about low GC. Thanks

no buddy ... no damage , just that it scraped through. on the first occasion , i was the only occupant and i thought that the car would glide over an average sized breaker , but it did not.

on the 2nd occasion there were 5 occupants in the car . this time was a bit slow but still the bottom kissed the breaker. guess have to be more careful the next time. the sx4 ofcourse scores on this front thanks to the big 16" tyres.

Thanks for the lovely review Autofreako!

30k is a huge amount to save!

If I were in the market for a car in this range, I would also pick the City.

I too like the exterior design of City but somehow Linea amuses me more. Also, this City looks smaller in profile than most luxury cars!

Honda is certainly going to upgrade the interiors within a year as opposed to usual 2 yrs. time gap.

The steering adjustment for reach is a very good feature according to me.

118bhp is sure in the Corolla's territory, do you have 0-100 figures?

Mileage has always been City's forte!

Poor GC means no low profile/wide tires & body skirts/kit.

Waiting for the pics.

yeah i also love the looks of linea and i think the linea's rear surely looks better than the ANHC but the front looks more cool on the ANHC due to those sleek headlights and the grille.

again looks are subjective and tastes vary. thats my personal opinion.

0-100 for city 10.2 secs , corolla : 9.1 (not altis ) civic : 9.6 secs.

now thats not much of a difference considering that its a comparison between c and d segment cars.

Ironically , its much quicker than the petrol jetta (0-100 : 13.8 secs ! ) , a car which is 6 lacs costlier smiley2.gif and a segment above

Congrat's autofreako, and also great saving's of some 35k. About the CD player, nowaday's you don't need one with all the great mp3 player's around. My Elantra has a CD player and mind you it's a pain to change CD's when on long drive's, some's got to do it for you and you don't alway's get the right CD when your searching. Whereas with a mp3 player, put it shuffle mode and leave it on so it doesn't get too 'predictable'.

Nice review autofreako. The mileage you get is good. And also don't worry for no CD player, with pendrives, music phones and mp3 players there is no need for a CD player. I hardly use CD player in my car.

Didn't you pay for Engine oil during first service?

That's that. Now that you have the City you could start improving the interiors in the car, but at your expense,

On the FOG lamp front, I have not liked the oval fog lamps on the imports they just look too much out of place, to carry the beautiful design the FOG lamps should be similar to the Verna's. Longish and angular and should fill up the sooped up front bumpers next to the 'U' shaped grill, no? LED's will be superb.

When you look at the full side profile of the car from far off you find the wheels a bit too small for the car.

An upgrade to 15 inches would be ideal and Yes wider tires a dire need for this car.

I find the spare wheel well should not be visble at the rear,Further looks ugly with unfinished paint looks kinda too short a skirt showing off an ugly bottom, rear spoiler should do the trick.

The seamless headlamp, radiator and bonnet look very very cool.

Engine wise there is no competition!!

Thanks Tanmay , DD, CC and anijog for your thoughts.

yes i agree the tyres look weedy and contemplating to change to bigger ones.

am planning to upsize to 15"  michelin 195 (stock ones michelin 175) and he's offering me 2400 per tyre for exchange.suggest me if is it the right price under exchange coz i do not have much knowledge about them.

have decided on aura alloys ... look very voguish for 18ks.

@anijog : could not get your point  regarding the visibility of the spare tyre and the unfinished paint ?smiley24.gif

If you look from the rear under the rear bumper the wheel well for the spare tire shows this has a towing hook on it. It look very unattractive.

I don't know if there are any after market rear skirts for this, but the least that can be done is pobabaly give it a proper paint finish.

now this car is less on features and is the costliest in its segment but it has those ultra hot looks...i really like the back side of the car..the boot looks quiet small from outside but its quiet huge from inside...the boot is so well integrated that one doesnt comes to know that it has such a big boot.

space- i have sat in my friends anhc and the car is very spacious...i found it almost having the same space as my corolla.

interiors-very good design but those cheap looking plastics are big turn off but the design of the dash is so good that plastics can be overlooked...it has so many cubbyholes..cool.

people here have criticized it for having a usb player but its more convenient than a cd player...sound quality is quiet good and a normal person wont have to spend any money on i.c.e

engine- now this is the best part of this car...the sweet and creamy i-vtec...till 100 kmph no sound what so ever and frankly the engine of other cars is simply no match for the i-vtec...the car is so silent that it feels as if the car is running on water rather on petrol !!!!

well i know this car is costlier than others, doesnt have a.c.c,alloys,fogs but it has a gem of an engine which is more than enough...i will buy the anhc if i have to buy a car of that segment !!!!

@ anijog : did'nt have a look under the rear bumper about what you are talking about. will surely have a look first thing tomorrow in the morning. wonder how i missed it ?smiley9.gif

@mehul-bhp : you seem to read my mind for my choice of car prefectly man !

yup , the space is similar to the altis. i myself was surprised to see this. honda has utilized the space extremely well keeping in mind the dimensions of the car.

yeah the boot looks very small on the outside , but it is actually 508 L !

the customer service is really cool. It's been just over a month and i've received about 8-10 calls from HONDA inquiring about any issues/feedback/problems/service etc etc.

Guess this is where this car manufacturers reigns supreme over the contemporaries !
