Hyundai i20 1.4 CRDi set for July 2009 launch!

Recommended Posts

Hyundai added two exciting variants to its good-looking hatchback today: the 1.4 CRDi and the 1.4 petrol. The new diesel motor develops 88.7 bhp and 22.4 kgm of torque. And the Korean carmaker promises 20 km to the litre with the diesel i20. The other version is a new 1.4 petrol motor developing 100 bhp. Importantly, the 1.4 petrol comes with an automatic transmission.

Prices are as follows:

1.4 CRDI Magna - Rs 6.19 lakh

1.4 CRDI Asta - Rs 6.83 lakh

1.4 CRDI Asta with options - Rs 7.20 lakh

1.4 Petrol automatic - Rs 7.31 lakh

1.4 Petrol automatic with all options - Rs 7.72 lakh

(All prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi. Options package includes six airbags and a sunroof)

Diesel prices are introductory, while the petrol 1.4 will not be available with a manual option for now.

As expected, Hyundai was awaiting the launch of the Honda Jazz to introduce the two new i20s. With the introduction of these two i20s, Hyundai has covered all bases with its big hatchback which has done surprisingly well in the marketplace.

The diesel i20 will sway people not only from the 1.3 Multijet powered Suzuki Swift and Fiat Grande Punto with 75 bhp and nearly 19.1 kgm of torque, it will also take away some marketshare from cars like the Suzuki Swift Dzire.

The 1.4 petrol on the other hand will take on the Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 petrol and Honda Jazz and will be the most powerful out of the trio.

I feel Hyundai has again messed up as far as pricing goes, the diesel variants are costlier by 1.2-1.4 lacs. Hyundai should have realised after the failure of Getz that in India price is more important than a powerful engine.

Punto emotion pack is better vfm as compared to i20 magna at the same price.

I for see a price correction after a while when the initial hoopla is over & exports stabilize. Till then its not the best buy.

Just see the diff. between petrol base model & diesel base model, its ~2L, that's whopping! All the diesel advantage is completely lost due to such a big margin, not justified at all.

Hyundai should have emulated Maruti(Ritz) or Fiat(Punto) but it choose to follow Honda(Jazz) & Skoda(Fabia), poor strategy!

By now they should have realized, Hyundai cannot command premium for its vehicles!

One thing hyundai did right is putting ABS std on diesel and rear disc brakes all that torque needs good brakes to stop , this is the reason many verna CRdi had accident due to poor brakes (non rear discs option) and small tyres . Though the price is still not justified it is 30k more according to my expectations.

Also now there is a hype of 5star NCAP so they are charging a premium for it but here we don't get ESP nor 5 year warrenty .smiley19.giflike in europe.rssh2009-07-08 04:19:25

this is ridiculous...i called a sales executive at godawri hyundai in ludhiana and enquired about the 1.4 diesel..and he told me that it will take atleast 5-6 months to be delivered here as the supply is less..i mean cmon...

is this hyundai's fault or is it that the dealers dont want to give up the 1.2 bookings....

they are harassing us...

shame on hyundai dealers

Oh this is a revelation, Hyundai is going to suffer due to bad pricing, both auto & diesel variants are not going to find many buyers.

As already reflected, Hyundai launched this car in a jiffy due to competition demands but has to fulfill its exports commitments first. Till then price reduction would not serve their purpose, as it would bring in demand for which Hyundai would find diff.  to fulfill.

Af for now, the sales shall sustain on lower petrol models but as we all know the cars which come in diesel options hardly sell in petrol guise! So, Hyundai might find itself in a catch 22 situation!

The thing I like is Hyundai's gut's. They have launched two premium hatches at 'very' premium pricing, but fully kitted out. 6 airbags, all wheel discs, ABS/EBD, Double DIN audio with USB and AUX-IN, electric mirrors and retract, sunroof, alloys. I'm wanting to trade in my Elantra for the diesel i20 Asta (O). I must say Hyundai really has guts. MSIL in comparison is absolutely gutless and unimaginative in it's launches. It could have tweaked it's 1.3MJD to deliver almost the same figures as the 1.4 CRDI and kitted it out and sold it as a sports diesel, janta would have lapped it up. MSIL is content with plodding along doing numbers, probably the reason being they are unable to meet with existing demand to launch new variants or are they just living a "bluff" and want us all to believe their-"Oh, Iam very busy" attitude.

I have a vague feeling that this Hyundai is gonna end up as a 'thorn' in Honda's side. Surely it may swing some customer's in it's favor with the diesel and auto variant and the kit on offer. Lets see. I see as the timing of the new variants coming in just after the Jazz launch as an indication.

I am just disapointed as this was the car that had initially only one defect, the engine. Now I had thought that with the engine vows sorted out, we will have a complete car, with everything, space, features, power, safety, quality, fuel economy, but it was not to be. Hyundai was not happy with the negative column about the car being blank, so it gave us the price tag.

the car is awesome..i test drove it today...the engine is a killer...i took the car till 145...

All the gears are responsive..not much of a turbo-lag...

It will be a good highway car..i think that i went to 100 in about 12secs or so...

The car is smooth..doesnt feel like being in a diesel car....full marks and now i can say that 1.2 lakhs premium is justified...

Company claims mileage of should give around 17-18...

Kudos to hyundai
