Formula One is not a sport, says sports ministry

Alok Sinha, TNN 25 August 2009, 12:28am IST

NEW DELHI: It's a letter which is likely to create a huge debate in sports circles and rattle the motorsports fraternity.

According to sources, the ministry of sports in January 2009 wrote to JPSK Sports, the promoters of Formula One in the country, that their request for getting approval for remittance of $36.5 million (about Rs 177 crore) to be paid to Formula One Administration (UK) for holding an F1 race in India had been rejected on the grounds that "it (the race) would have no impact on the development of sports in the country".

JPSK had first gone to the Reserve Bank of India, which asked them to get the ministry's approval.

The basic premise of the ministry is that F1 is not needed in India and the money can be spent on development of disciplines which have a wider base in the country, ministry sources said.

"F1 is not purely sports. It is entertainment and this venture by JKSP is a commercial initiative," said a ministry source. In fact, the letter states that F1 will not have an impact on Indian sports "in terms of either participation, broad-basing or promotion of excellence".

"The proposed F1 race does not satisfy conditions which focus on human endeavour for excelling in competition with others, keeping in view the whole sports movement from Olympics downwards," said the source.

Sameer Gaur, MD, JPSK confirmed to TOI that their request had been rejected by the sports ministry.

Acutally speaking their is lesser market for F1 in India its a sport first then a buisness ,its the later which may not be as feasable . They should try for A1GP . I think they had decided to build a track which is due in2010.

Probably they have to use a 20% of the 177 crore to oil the mechanisms in the sports ministry' date=' then they may agree.[/quote']

Very well said, nothing moves without lubrication!

When will these people learn. This is extremely disappointing. F1 is the perfect combination of human ingenuity, supreme amount of skill and hard work, and a passion to compete. F1 is not only a sport but a major contributor towards us being provided with a lot of features in our cars, that we not consider standard. For e.g. the concept of aerodynamics, ABS etc.

The fact that the Indian govt. does not recognize the importance of F1 shows why our country has a history of inconsistant and dismal performances in all sports we have ever competed in. Dumbasses!!!

Really sad that our infrastructure is so poor.... Each of our M.P / M.L.A go so rich after each of their tenure.... 177 crore... isn't a big amount at all.

Formula 1 would only get us better market.... Bigger companies would get to know our market potential.... We would be having a better engg boon....

Indian r of course moto crazy..... The crowd would surely turn up.... Right now there is a huge fan following for F1... Circuit would do a world of good to us....

World recognisation being the most imp.....
