Toyota & Honda recalls

Recommended Posts

SG, your point does make sense. If you think of it, the throttle pedal is on the inner side on an LHD, so that is where the carpet has to cover the most. I had a very similar problem in my LHD fiat too. Got frustrated and cut a part of the mats.

After hearing/reading all the reports in the media, I checked in my Altis and did not find the mat to be obstructing the accelerator pedal.

Dr Gupta is right, the issue will be with the LHD vehicles.

Toyota are changing the gas pedals in the US. Honda says that it also gets some of its pedals from the same source.

Toyota South Africa are unaffected.

So by the looks of it, the rhd contingent can rest easy.

Automobile giant Honda on Friday said it was recalling 646,000 Fit/Jazz and City automobiles worldwide to fix a window switch defect that could cause fire. The announcement dealt a fresh blow to Japanese automakers' reputation for quality as rival Toyota expanded its own massive recall due to a faulty accelerator pedal to 1.8 million vehicles, covering eight different models, from European markets.

Even as Toyota faced a US Congressional probe, Honda said it would recall 619,000 Jazz cars

Its good to see the car manufacturers taking responsibilty for the defective products. This shows that they really care for their valued customers.

Manufacturing defects are bound to happen once in a while, but owning up for it is the true spirit of leadership.

Recently, even Fiat India has been calling up customers to inform them about replacing master slave cylinder of a particular batch even before they posed any problems in the car.

Atleast now they are realizing that their customers cannot be taken for granted !!

But it is really shocking indeed, to hear of these incidents. I did not expect to see a renowned brand like Toyota, which claims "Quality Revolution", commit such a huge blunder. Carmakers should sit up and take notice, this incident is not something to be taken lightly.

I feel this is an very important news for ACIan. I created a thread earlier on the same topic, but fount no reponse. My guess is, the topic title is not that good. So I am restarting a same thread. Even if this thread helps 1 ACIan, this thread cause is solved. I am sure there should be more ACIan who bought City during 2007, but found no one discussing whether he took it Honda or not.

As we are well aware of the recall stories by now, a big question comes to my mind " does this mark the beginning of the downfall for Toyota"?

The term "Quality revolution" has taken a beating & press Worldover, specially in Japan has taken a strong view of this.

This recall could well turn out to be a History defining move & Toyota's upward movement could potentially stall/slowdown.

This problem will definitely pull down Toyota from its throne. VW is so lucky to exploit the situation at the best.

This reminds me the fall of Videocon brand of colour televisions in early 90s due to faulty picture tubes sourced from Uptron.

BPL could exploit the situation and became the no.1 seller of CTVs after the fall of Videocon from its no.1 position. But Videocon survived it by diversifying its brand portfolio by doing  the manufacturing and marketing of various multinational brands in India. One of the best cases for  study for management students.

Toyota comes up with repair proposal for recalled

cars

DriveInside.com | Monday February 1, 2010

Japanese automaker, Toyota Motor Corporation,

which recently recalled 4.1 million of its vehicles globally and 5.4

million vehicles in the US due to defective accelerator pedals and floor

mats, has come up with a remedy for the problem. The company submitted a

repair proposal to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

in the US last week, an official from the Transportation Department

said. The safety agency has not rejected the proposal, implying that

Toyota can go ahead with its repair plan. A number of Toyota dealers

reconfirmed that the company was ready with a solution, which they said

would be announced shortly.

Toyota had earlier said that it

would stop the production of eight of its models for a week in the US

and in Canada, starting from Monday. It said that a similar step would

not be taken in Europe, however, as a remedy was already being

implemented there. Toyota Motor Chief Executive, Akio Toyoda, apologised

last week for the unprecedenced recall, but added that consumers should

continue to be confident about driving Toyota cars.

Toyota
recalled millions of vehicles for defective functioning and it sees a
grave danger in the sale in 2010. The hit will be severe for Toyota in
the US wherein the company has withdrew 8 most popular models last week
on the basis of accelerator pedal snag. But the company expects the
reversal of fortune, that the recall may impede sale increase in the
future. The VP of the company expressed fears over the fall in the sale
due to recall and the figures in January was alarming. The sale report
for the Q3 will be revealed on Thursday, he said. The slippery floormats
and accelerator snag costed the company to recall 8.1 million of its
vehicles, which overtook the net sale in the last year.

The snag is a freak one, according to the company, and the company is
on the verge of reviving the confidence from the customers. The VP said
this has been the first such instance from Toyota in the history of the
company. No official response to the accidents and casualties has been
made from the company sources. But the President of the company(grandson
of the founder) made an apology in Switzerland last week. In the US,

What goes up, must come down! Specially when you forget that from where you rose! It always pays to remain attached to ones humble beginnings.

In Indian Toyota has been charging a premium for its tag, poor people paid happily. Now, things should change but again the poor people of India hardly realize!

There has been a lot of talk about Fortuner having poor brakes but the company has done nothing so far.

See the foot in mouth of US Transport Secy. First advised people not to drive Toyotas involved in the recall, and then recanting. Sounded like our politicos.

As for brakes the worst I have seen were 1. good ol' Amby, and ii. Peugeot 205 (late 1980's).

Toyota earns $1.2B in Q1 amidst recall mess

by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on May 11th, 2010 at 1:28PM

gyi0059416391opt.jpg

Conventional wisdom might tell you that Toyota

should have lost loads of money last quarter in the wake of the

company's largest-ever global recall and safety scandal. Perhaps it

shouldn't surprise us too much to hear that conventional wisdom would

be all wrong. In reality, Toyota reported a profit between January and

March of this year of $1.2 billion.

This profit comes despite the fact that Toyota reports expenditures

related to the recall mess at a little over a billion dollars (or, 100

billion yen) and surely took a monetary hit compared to previous years

due to the unprecedented spate of incentives

to keep sales rolling. The gurus at Edmunds estimate that Toyota's

incentive spending is up by over half (an average of $2,498 per

vehicle) compared to the previous year.

According to company head Akio Toyoda, the automaker plans to continue

boosting profits by "[offering] high quality, reasonably priced

vehicles." That certainly sounds reasonable, no? Executing on that

promise, though, is the hard part. Click on past the break for a

complete rundown of Toyota's latest financial report.

BREAKING: Toyota admits 270,000 cars have faulty engines worldwide:

In 20 years, odds are few people will remember that 2010 was one of the worst years for  Toyota in terms of recalls, but for now, it seems like the company just can't win for losing. The company has announced that it is currently preparing to recall a total of 270,000 Toyota Crown and Lexus models worldwide. As it turns out, some of the company's 4.6-liter V8 and 3.5-liter V6 engines were built using faulty valve springs that may cause the car to stall while driving. Around 180,000 of the faulty powerplants were sold outside of Japan.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company says that some Toyota Crown, Lexus LS460, Lexus LS600h, Lexus LS600hL, Lexus GS350, Lexus GS450h, Lexus GS460 and Lexus IS350 models will be affected by the recall, and that it will initiate a procedure to fix the problem as soon as it can figure out a way to do so with the least amount of inconvenience to its customers.

The news comes as Toyota continues to try to put this year's bevy of recall issues behind it, including paying a $16.4 million fine to the U.S. government for delaying certain recalls.

Suzuki Kizashi Recalled Over Dashboard Issues

suzukikizashi-1024x680.jpg

The National Highway Transport Safety Administration issued a recall

of the Suzuki Kizashi due to potential injuries which may be caused by

the lower glove box door during an accident. It is said that the glove

box door is potentially harmful as it will pop open during an accident

and peirce into the body of the front seat occupant. It is noted here

that this model does not comply to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety

Standard number : 201, which deals with the safety of the passengers

inside the car and the interior safety.

According to the NHTSA, Suzuki will replace the glove box door free

of cost on all the 5,107 units of the Kizashi. There is still no update

on how long this will take to fix.

Toyota Recalls Avalon sedans in U.S:

toyota_avalon_motoroids.jpg

Toyota is about to recall a whopping 373,000 Avalon (2000-2004 model) sedans in U.S.A. The reason for this recall is said to be a faulty steering lock.

Toyota isn't out of hot water just yet, although many people have conveniently forgotten their accelerator issue after BP went all "Look at me! I'm dangerous, too!" For those who don't recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been dealing with another problem regarding some ToMoCo products: a stalling issue with up to 1.2 million 2005-2007 Corollas and Matrixes (Matrices?). That means possibly beating dead-horse Pontiac some more, since the Vibe was a brand-engineered Matrix.

As for the update: our Toyota Warning level has been elevated from "Preliminary Evaluation" to "Engineering Analysis" due to the cars still stalling at any speed and not being able to restart. To your battle stations!

Word from the safety agency is that over 160 complaints have come in about a situation where "the engine can stall without warning at any speed and not restart" due to a faulty ECU. Although Toyota doesn't seem to think it's a problem, I'd venture to say engine cut-off on a highway or intersection might be a major problem.

Toyota says the issue stems from either cracks in solder joints on, or defective coating of, the ECU circuit board. According to some commenters, the repair could cost owners up to $1,000. And the hits keep coming...
