The Queen of Indian roads

Recommended Posts

the ambassador has served the Indian people specially the gov people with a lot of commitment and now its time to retire. though you can not compare the amby with the newer cars  in terms of technologies like abs or airbags are concerned it could as hell give the cars a run for their money where reliability is concerned.

i think they should stop production and a little later produce a LE as said before sellng it only to people who genuinely love the car.

a car just like life

can a car become the symbol of a whole country? is it possible for a car to

even take on the characteristics of the people living in this country? for the

indian car make ambassador, this seems to be true. on the one hand, its

technical progress and mobility and on the other hand, a fundamental structure

which has basically remained unchanged since the 50s that perfectly reflect all

the elements and contradictions typical of life in india.

somehow nothing seems to change, but at the same time there are constant

efforts to open up new possibilities of use. a car just like indian life itself

Images from Kolkata-includes taxis -some with white wall tyres. I

visited Austin Distributors showroom (one of the oldest HM dealers) and

requested them for allowing me to take Amby pictures. Took many of

ones in the showroom and some ready for delivery. The Morris Cowley,

Oxford and Issis Owners Club, Oxford , UK has requested me to send them

some showroom Amby pictures for the quarterly journal and there can be

no better place as compared to Kolkata, to click brand new Ambys. The

1500DSL is still a hit with taxi drivers (costs Rs 382000 something

withouts RTO, insurance) while the 2000DSL ( at around Rs 5L depending

on the variant selected) sells well, though dwindling, for private

users.

I had a chat with the Sales Manager and apprehended that the car's

production may be stopped due to the mounting losses by HM.He said no

way, there's no such news from the HM Hqs. Thats a relief for Amby fans.

Wonder why the rear leaf spring suspensions for the Amby cannot be made

into coil springs. The Scorpio has been done up and the change is much

perceptible. Why can't HM do a Lotus Design UK, consultancy to switch

over to coil springs?

ultimately fade into oblivion in Mullick Bazar, Kolkata.

I was in Kolkata just a few days ago. Moved around by taxis and the Maruti Gypsy too.
Was chatting with many taxi drivers. They were all saying that the police is too strict to implement the HC order which says that any commercial vehicle older than 15 years shall not ply within the metro.
I asked one taxi driver WB 04 C series as to whether his taxi was 15 plus years old? He said its a 2002 model and still has 8 years to go.No doubt this taxi was in a ramshackle condition and appeared old and doddering but the reality was that it was just 7 years old.
The drivers said that Kolkata has two Amby dealers (1) Austin Distributors and (2) Shah Automobiles.
Austin gives a discount of Rs 50 K if any old taxi (any condition) is handed over for exchange for a new one. Shah gives a Rs 45 K discount in such cases. The rest of the cost is to be met through bank loans, if liquid cash is not available.
As a result the roads have more of brand new Amby taxis , many with yellow number plates. The 1500 DSL (old BMC diesel engine) is now BS III compliant.

Good to see this old friend back. I look at it with mixed feelings. There was a lot of hot discussion between some members on this and other threads. Unfortunately, one of our most articulate members Gurkha left the forum thereafter in a huff. His adversary (I will not name) him left after about six months for some other reason. Let me just repeat the name given to the Good Ol' Amby by Gurkha 'Inverted Bathtub'.

Thanks sgiitk. Those memories are still fresh on my mind as I was also an active  part of this thread.

Ambassadors still sell, not only as taxis but even as private cars. Found the 1500 DSL BS III Five speed, based on the

1489cc BMC engine quite popular even as private cars. The silver and

white cars in the second and third pictures are the 1500 DSL.

This is a taxi viewed from five floors above!

That silver looking amby looks quite good anjan. Amby is really very comfortable, i have seen many rich people having chauffeur driven amby only for its comfort.

In my city there is big businessman who owns white Amby(the new one) along with wagonR, Safari, Mitsubishi Montero and Black BMW X5. But still in his parking lot, the car which stands first is our old Amby.

True bluesapphire many even today prefer the Amby.Hindustan Motors may show very good sales during the current year, as new replacement taxis in Kolkata may run into a few thousands.

I got this mail from my friend, who owns a few Ambassadors and some

Morris Oxford Series II and III from the UK.The extract from this mail

pertaining to the Ambassador is put up here:

"Our Ambassador is going to be used for filming on

Saturday, 12th Dec 2009. The job takes place in London [ we are only 22 miles from

the centre of London] and we have to be there at 7 A.M. At this stage

I do not know if it is a film or a pop video but the scene is an

Indian family arriving in London to live and their possessions being

unloaded, the Ambassador emerges from the back of a large removal

lorry, decorated with garlands etc, that is all I know at the moment."

"Had an interesting experience today with a new customers Ambassador.

The owner brought this car with her from Delhi where she had worked at

the French embassy. The car is a 2006 petrol model with air con and

power steering. We had to take it for the 'Individual vehicle

approval' test which is a legal requirement here. It failed on a few

niggly points but more worryingly it failed on the glass not having

the appropriate markings on it. This could turn into a real headache."

The individual vehicle approval test is something like the homologation done here in India for imports to be certified as roadworthy.

(homologation means to officially recognize car model or component viz. to give official recognition

to a prototype car or car component)

Again Ambassadors here from Kolkata their heartland.

250820d1261663471-landmaster-ambassador-

This Amby Mark 4's headlight chrome rings are basically the ones that

go with the Mark 1 and II.Guess some older, classic Amby owner looking

for these may feel the pinch seeing these here in the wrong place.

This last one shows the newer taxis -the 1500DSL Grand,5 Speed

conforming to the BS III norms, taking over from the older Ambys. The 15

year or older taxis are off road now, going by the court ruling on

commercial vehicles. The new taxi costs Rs 3.80 L on road and the older

one gets Rs 50,000 in exchange.The taxi series WB 02 D 0001 till 9999

has ended within some three years (a record of sorts) due to the brisk

sales of Ambassador taxis recorded. Its WB 02 E 0001 onwards now for

the newer taxis.

The plastic bumpers and the newer fairings on the new taxis give an

unwritten message. The chrome bumpers of the older Mark 4 may be passe

soon and it will not be surprising to see these bumpers feature for

sale after a few years on the Vintage and Classic car Spares thread or

on eBay.

Another point that comes to the fore is that the last car in India to

be still manufactured with chrome bumpers will no more come with these

as OE.

This Ambassador's front headlight chrome rings and taillight covers are

from Mark 3/4.The horn cover too is missing. The car is otherwise quite

original.

The Mark II front grille with the parking lights was a very common

feature typical of Ambassadors- has become rare ever since! The older

grille has given way to newer Mark 3 and 4 ones, fitted to many older

Ambassadors.

Such a dashboard that lasted from March 1971 till June 1975 (advent of

the Mark 3) and has lately become very, very rare to find. There are

enough cars of that era, but the dash has been changed to the black

plasticky ones.

Also note the Mark II badge shifting conveniently to the rear boot once

for all, till the present day. After March 1971, this badge replaced the

two on the left and right front fenders- a regular Mark II feature!

The headlight sealbeam was originally badged Lucas "Made in England" (

my Landmaster has the two sealbeams with such badging) and after the

Smiths "Made in England" meters went away in 1965, the English headlights too were

gone. Yenkay meters came along and thereafter Autometer -these in the picture are branded Autometer .The headlight sealbeams  here in this car are badged Lucas "Foreign Glass".
