Mercedes launches New S500 and GL350Cdi

Recommended Posts

Mercedes Benz India has kickstarted their Auto Expo 2010 campaign
with a bang by launching the S500 saloon and the GL350 CDi SUV.  The
S500 is the most expensive car produced in India and the GL350 is
probably the biggest SUV on the market.

The S500 is equipped with a new SPLITVIEW technology for the COMAND
control and display system, centrally positioned in the console. Other
new features are the SD memory card slot and the Bluetooth interface.

The new leviathan GL350CDI on the other hand reaches a top speed of
210kph and races to 0-100 in 9.5sec. The unique 4MATIC permanent
four-wheel drive system provides the GL with greater handling
irrespective of the conditions. The two individual third-row seats can
be folded at the press of a button to create a flat loading surface.

With the E getting the S' engine's, and with the new 7 series and A8 looming large in the horizon, this was bound to happen. The present A 8 already encompasses the 12 cyl model in India. The S class engines, in India, have started to look kinda underpowered when seen in perspective of the present competition.

Mercedes Benz has a history of playing catch up in India and that is why they have fallen far behind BMW in India. Anyways, so they finally launch the S500 in India which I don't think will sell much and the kinda ugly GL50 at that price point will also face stiff competition.

@ DD

The new 7 series is not looming in the horizon. It is already here. But yes competition is increasing.

However sadly despite being locally assembled, Merc, BMW and Audi are all pricing their cars as if they were CBU imports and pockeing the duty benefits themselves. I would love to see the prices dropping to the European levels.

I agree. GL is not going to find that much favour in India, especially against the likes of Q7, X5 and the Land Rovers. S500 is an afterthought and Mercedes rather bring in powerful versions of the diesel S class rather than the petrol. GL350CDI diesel is a good engine but what about the GL?
