Durango Dude
I repeat <ad nauseum> first 3 free services for my Elantra was as said: free completely no charges whatsoever. Ist year the only thing I spent on the car were my emi's and fuel. Even after that its been so darn low, sometimes I can't believe my eyes when I see the bill. anjan_c2007
@DD: As it stands it has improved between the second and third service. It feels far more peppy and refined - running in as well as Mobil1.@BF: Yes' date=' I was expecting more. Even Maruti Esteem cost me more in the first three services. [/quote'] sgiitk Good news that the Civic's performance has improved. About the servicing costs being too low, I would like to say that it is a lull before the storm. Esteem days were more more plain and simple. But now some of the services of newer cars make us feel so financially secure. The spare replacements and any other manual labour by the ASC makes the bill reach higher four figure and even five figure amounts too easily. anjan_c20072010-11-26 17:22:
rahul1810
Our City has run for 9000 kms now and there has not been any service which we would have termed as exorbitant. Honda gets its money from accident parts which can be clearly seen in the ACI spare parts cost comparison. Any body part to be replaced and you are sure that you will be spending atleast 3500 rs plus labour charges.
sgiitk
@DD: The days of free (all inclusive, incl consumables) in Hyundai are over. See I did not mention the Hyundais' in my post! @anjan & rahul: The service booking form has the rate schedule. Do not look exorbitant. They are more than Hyundai/Maruti but not crazy. Incidentally I had a bit of an altercation with a gate getting into a drive. Involved denting on one and painting of two panels - cost Rs.4000+taxes. Accent would have cost more. Experience so far - far more relaxed. Going to Gwalior (270km) there was about 45km where there was effectively no-road. Decided to come back via Jhansi (320km) which is a combo of the NS corridor and EW corridor (both about 60-70% done). Took about 7-1/2 hours. Was still not tired at the end of it. One interesting observation - Collinite wax does seem to last. Waxing on the repainted part was distinctly harder than on the rest of the car. Also, the first wax had needed harder work. In other words the surface finish appears to last. sgiitk2010-11-28 05:56:
rssh
Great to see that you civic is getting smoother day by day sgiitk .Tell me more about the speedbreaker , has the harder rear suspension really helped , I wanted to know because yesterday I saw a new gen civic getting hit causing a big dent underbody. I have used the collinite wax and can vouch for it . It is way better than the formula1 wax I use currently.
sgiitk
@rssh: I see not much of a difference between the speed bump / pothole behaviour of my Civic and the earlier Accent. I must add that the even earlier Esteem would have been more forgiving. I may add that I have not driven 4/5 up so far, so maybe. Just a bit of caution is what you need. BonFre
Prof. share some more on Collinite, where to get it & cost. Also, how do you apply it with a machine or manually?
sgiitk
Collinite 845 is a hard wax from Bringing Best IMPEX (P) Ltd. New Delhi, India. Contact: Sanjay Phone No: 91-9971199457 E.mail: sanjay@bringingbest.com Web Site: www.bringingbest.com If I remember correctly then the price is about 1223 incl. courier, one microfine cloth, some perfume tables, etc. for a litre. They claim it will give 10 coats on a car like City. I did a NEFT and got it within four days. Just e-mail sanjay@... You apply it like any other wax, i.e manually. sgiitk2010-11-29 09:11:
Kinshuk
@sgiitk Looking at your expenses my Altis has been far cheaper to run and maintain. Just 1 service in 1 year. (except the first service done within 1month of sale) almost 5000kms done. very satisfied with the car. Approx money spent on it Rs14-1500 (will give an exact fig later)
sgiitk
@Kinshuk: The amount paid to Honda for service so far is under Rs.300. The next service will only be due after 12 months, i.e. mid 2011. No oil change here. They have switched to 5000/6 months for semi-synth and 10000/12 months for synth on the Civic some time back. As for the oil I bought Mobil1 (0W40) for Rs.4400. Honda are selling Idemitsu Synth (0W30) at about Rs.850 per litre. If I had gone semi-synth then the oil would have been only about Rs.250 per litre (x 3.85l). I would expect the Toyota to be somewhat cheaper to maintain. I do not think putting 4k for denting-painting to the Honda account will be fair. To give a better idea I will try and scan their charges schedule, and post it. sgiitk
Trip update: Did a trip from Kanpur-Palwal-Sohna-Dharuhera (Golden Hut Resorts) & back. Total 1032km. Overall Average: 12.54kpl. Indicated by the odometer 14.0kpl Other experience: 1. The SatNav maps were pretty accurate. Only there was a bit of NH2 (near Etawah) and SH71B (Haryana) missing. Local info/road signs covered these. 2. On the way out we got lost - ended up in Nuh instead of Bhiwadi. What happened was that the resort is supposedly in a village named Khijuri. I found a Khijuri and programmed the GPS for it. It turned out to be a 'half horse village' and we ended up going via Nuh. 2. Haryana is afflicted by two kinds of speed breakers. The official kind are very numerous but drivable. Then there are unofficial breakers (like on the Nuh-Bhiwari stretch). Again very numerous and really bad/high. Even a SUV will have problems negotiating these. Suggest Mr Jairam Ramesh visits some of these roads before ranting about SUVs.
asethi919
Some of the bad roads can be atributed to the work that is going on, on that highway. If I am correct they plan on make it 4 lanes. Aah! Goldern Huts Resort. The owners of that place are old family friends of ours. I have spent countless weekends there since I was 5 or so. (Sorry for going OT)
Durango Dude
@sgiitk: Hope you had a good trip and sojourn at the Golden Hut Resorts. Hope the speed 'humps' did not take too much of a toll on the Civic.
sgiitk
This is the Cigarette Lighter Y-socket adapter as received, which could not take the load of the Car Fridge, and the modified one with a lead from an old Pump which is working great. Apparently, all adapters on the market are rated at 2A only. Toyota / BMW are apparently selling adapters but must be at a price! @DD: hopefully not much. Everything is running/sounding fine. sgiitk2010-12-28 04:44:
sb-alto
Do the brake pads show any signs of wear ? and do you feel that the suspension is too soft ? A friend of mine with Civic A/T was complaining about these two. Wonder if it a common problem
sgiitk
@sb-alto: Brake pad wear - it too early. Going by the posts on the other forum I expect to get about 45-60k on the pads. Honda likes to change the discs at the same time. The pads on my Santro barely last 20k. My old Esteem was similar (25k, but it was pre ventilated discs). Suspension is fine. In fact my wife finds it transmitting more of the road information than (for example) my old Accent. She would have preferred a more softer suspension. The Civic does have a tendency to hit speed bumps if you are careless, but then so does the City. You probably need a SX4 or something like that to handle big speed bumps. The rear end changes in September 2009 have improved things a lot. sgiitk2010-12-31 05:52:
sb-alto
45-60K km is a lot for AT car brake pads. If I remember correctly I changed brake pads of my Alto after every 15-18K km. My brake rotors are not ventilated though and absence of alloys makes it more difficult to get rid of brake dust. Civic V has discs on all four right? creativebala
Isn't Civic's suspention a softer one too? Why most of us change only Brake pads of front disc where as not caring the rear drum?
sgiitk
@bala: Soft suspension is not necessarily the same as having a tendency to bottom. For example a soft suspension will roll excessively on turns. The bulk of the braking is in the front. FWD cars have 60%+ weight in front, and during braking this becomes even more. Rear pads/shoes do have to be changed but only about half as often. remember the glue tends to fail and the linings de-laminate in 5-7 years. Changing the rear anchors in about 5 years is not a bad idea. Also, ATs tend to wear out the brakes faster as there is no engine braking.
rssh
@BALA I think your friend has a pre facelift version of the Civic which had really very soft suspension . One can clearly see it lugging around when 3 people and the boot is occupied fully.
sgiitk
@rssh: I am trying to say that a soft or hard suspension is not exactly the same as the tendency to bottom. I will say that the Civic has a Firm but Low suspension. The way to find out whether a suspension is soft or firm is the amount of body roll going round a curve.
Durango Dude
With the traffic and the roads the way they are, we use the brakes a lot more often so 45-60k for brake pad change would be an optimistic figure for "Indian" conditions, for an AT.
sgiitk
Agreed. However this is the figure being quoted by most on ToonBHP. I will be happy to get 40k with the AT, which is what I got on my Accent (MT).

I bought collinite 845 from Auto Mall, www.auto-mall.in at the price of Rs 905, payed by NEFT transfer, and got Microfiber towel free after quoting team-bhp id and their shipping is free in bangalore. Same thing is listed in ebay but price is bit more there. And verified that they are listed as international distributor for collinite http://www.collinite.com/distributors_international.html Good to have competition, prices now comparable to US price.
