importin second hand cars

Recommended Posts

It has been made virtually impossible. It must be rhd and India homologated, otherwise you have to pay to get it done. In other words you cannot. Our motor lobby saw to it that second hand imports are effectively banned.

There's some good news though:

Instead of you importing the car yourself... why not leave that task to the manufacturer.  For example, BMW, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, all of them import cars for customers.  The only downswing is the price you end up paying.  But if one can afford this, then you can get any car like the BMW M3, Mercedes C63 AMG, Toyota Landcruiser, Lexus LS460H, Nissan 350Z etc.

1. The cost of the car needs to be over 20 lakhs rupees (or over 40k dollars) at its country of origin.
2. There would be a near 110% tax on that price.
3. And ofcourse, no LHDs.

To give a simple answer to your question: NO

Better thing to do would be to see if there is an old already imported car available in India from the 70's.  Back then, the rules of the games were much simpler.  But, now, importing a car in itself is a next to impossible task. But, importing a LHD, forget it.  There are very clear rules that states this cannot be done.

Legally, you cant export any car which is older than 1965. Neither can you import any car which is older than 1965. Unless it is under Transfer of residence (fo import only). There are many people who still ship out cars and especially bikes out illegally in ieces. I know of one such chap!! Deals in Lambretas, Vespas and the lot....
