Retro Amby coming

Recommended Posts

The new Amby will have a retro design and sport cutting-edge engineering to compete on comfort and value for money. Overseas experts have been roped in for the metamorphosis. The new version will be ready by January-February 2011 for test trials and is expected to undergo validation by May so that commercial production can begin next July

While the platform and overall dimensions will be retained, the exteriors will be comprehensively redesigned by auto styling experts from Europe. MD Manoj Jha said the new car will look very different from the current Ambassador. "The new car will be a sibling of the Ambassador but the change will be so holistic that it will be a completely different vehicle. Apart from the new-look retro exterior, the interiors will be revamped. It will be powered by BS IV-complaint and BS V-ready 1.5 litre and 2 litre di-esel as well as petrol engines that are powerful and fuel-efficient. Overseas technology firms are working on each aspect of the car to ensure the vehicle is on a par with cont-emporary vehicles on Indian roads in terms of built quality and reliability

I think its time to move on; not get bogged down trying to 'reinvent' the wheel. As such Amby is as retro as it gets. It's ok to keep old cars in mint condition as antiques. The process is evolutionary (as in Porsche, extremely sorry to compare Porsche to Amby) and there has been no evolution at all with the Amby. Its like someone gets a 'brainwave' and it can't be done overnight. All this has been tried in the past and hasn't exactly worked.

Bullet has it's real hardcore fans that fuel sales, I don't think Amby has such hardcore fans in sufficient numbers to warrant such a venture. HM would be better off getting newer models of the Lancer priced sensibly and sell of the Amby product line for 'junk' value, instead of trying to flog a dead horse to life.

I know a Royal Enfield executive who left the company out of sheer frustration of trying to sell various avatars of what is basically a relic.

So, Finally the Budget-n-Desi Icon is coming on the way.

Even I was having the Exactly same thought about the HM-Amby Retro roaming in my mind few days back, after seeing the Success what the Other Icons are getting here, but Slipped due to the Reason that HM's Quality & Reliability might play Mess with that Landmaster derived Icon, leading to further deterioration of its Image. dr_nishu2010-08-11 20:42:44

Anyone remember the Avigo? It had vanished as quickly as it appeared. Now wonder what they are upto with "overseas" experts, when the whole world is looking into India for R&D.

Strange as it may sound, I'm a great fan of the old Amby, just for the raw feel of driving. I feel that the new gen cars are too easy, too polished and I feel like playing a video game when driving them. In an Amby you can feel your muscles aching and it makes you think twice about braking distances! May be you have to say all your prayers before driving one, but that's the fun of it! smiley1.gif And no, I wouldn't take my family in one!

I am a fan of the Amby but was never a fan of HM. They were too busy enjoying themselves and never knew that Armageddon for them was real. Now they are surviving because of Mitsubishi, so why don't let the poor old Amby alone?

What aspects of Ambassador excites you and why?

[/quote']

Yesterday, I saw an accident on my way from Nellore to Tirupati.  An Innova (recent registration, may be less than 3 to 4 months) and an Ambassador (almost 10 years old) had a major crash at the Naidupeta NH junction (between Boodanam Toll gate and Tada) on the National Highway.

While the entire front half of Innova was extensively damaged, Ambi just got away with minor scratches.  Luckily, both drivers survived (they were the only ones in the two vehicles).  And, no other vehicles were involved in this major accident.

This is the only reason why I like an Ambassador.  It is literally a `battle tank' in the garb of a car.

@rameshbabu.n: Exactly what one will expect.

One question - In a crash you want to save the car or the occupants? Modern cars are designed to deform and absorb the energy while old cars do not so and transmit all the shock to its occupants.

I may add that I love the Amby - learnt to drive on it, and owned one till 1985! However, the are limitations of a 1950s design which one must accept.

Dear Sanjay ji - if the makers of Amby (new Amby) think about giving the new car, the new design and technology, do you think it will flow? What changes would you Like to see in the New Amby that would make you recommend it to a "retro look car" Lover?

I recommend the following for the `retro look amby' :

1.  Let the exterior remain the same, except for few changes.

2.  The position (gradient angle) of the windshied should be changed so as to

      make it more aerodynamic.

3.   The bulk of the changes should be done inside.

4    The streering wheel should be made more driver-friendly.

5.   The gear box should be smooth and the gear lever should be short.

6.   The door panels should be in sync with the current trends.

7.   The AirCondition is one of the sore areas of the Amby.  For some strange

reason, HM failed to give a good AC unit.  Almost all Ambys have their

ACs fitted outside.  Mostly of National make.  I know two experts (one in

Chennai - Anand and one in Hyderabad - Javed) who specialise only on

AC works in Amby.  This is an area where the HM needs to do a lot of

      work.

8.  The latest electronic accessories should be given (like MP3/DVD player

     with remotes/Bluetooth/Digital Displays/Climatizer/Charging points/ etc.,

9.  A recent series of Diesel engines should be made available, at least two.

Anyone who is going for such a retro style Amby shall be disappointed if the shape of the car is altered to a large extent.  However, he shall be welcoming the much needed changes in all the above areas.

That's what I think.

However, I may not be interested in buying an Amby now.

IMO everyone like the Amby , they really want to see an upgrade of it , But in the end if you have 8 lakhs in your hand and want to go buy a car and the new Amby is available would one go for it ?

I think HM should ask themselves this question and desgine the car.

Sadly HM has everything ,Mitsubishi by its side , acess to technology and engines at its disposal , Its the attitude that they lack to achieve something.

Lets hope that the old graceful British lady, now a native of Uttarpara, gets a more contemporary retro look with the usual gremlins removed.

-The ISZ 1800 petrol is'nt bought by many but needs to be gone and replaced with a good MPFI petrol engine of below 1500 cc to develop at least 110 bhp or so.The 1800 ISZ develops only 71 bhp (1817 cc) thats quite archaic today . Its a fuel guzzler thats best suited as government vehicles.

- The 1817 cc petrol engine has a CNG version that develops 50 bhp and may have its own clientiele viz. Delhi taxis. Can I believe that? 1817 cc and only 50 bhp.

-Most private buyers go for the 2000 DSL viz. 1995 cc diesel engine from Isuzu which is quite sluggish by today's standards. Its no doubt torquey but shockingly low on its 54 BHP output.(the old Mahindra Peugeot 540 DP diesel engine was 2112 cc developing a respectable 65 bhp.)

-The taxi trade relies on the BS III 1489 BMC diesel engine christened 1500DSL BS III. Perhaps this is the bread and butter version of the Amby these days at least in Kolkata.Any change over and upgradation will push up costs and backlash on the sales. So I am sure HM won't touch this variant and maintain status quo.

The rear suspension should be made independent rather than the leaf spring and axle suspension. When Mahindra can do a Lotus (Engg UK) on its rear suspension HM too very well can.

But the main crux of the problem lies in the very sad but real bitter truth that HM is on the BIFR radar. BIFR is the Union Govt. department that performs the "shhraddh ceremony" for sick and ailing companies.

So its really tough to visualise how far HM can go with its long list of Do's for the good ol' Amby.

The Amby should live on, however!

Its our uncrowned National Car!!

It will be great to see, if the youth can connect with it and get the Indian version of VW Beetel :)

Will I buy the new Retro Amby and take it to my office and make a statement? Yes I guess so, if I get less engine noise, and NO PROBLEM AC ...

IMO, Amby now needs a totally Next-Gen makeover now, rather than converting/designing into lookalikes of Mini Cooper with a boot or VW Beetle to appeal the Present Masses & Young Crowd now.

Infact it needs the;

1) Whole New Bodyshell/Chassis(as per Modern Safety standards as SG sir explained above) with Rust Free metal & design used, Proper Crumple Zones, Body Reinforcements, Collapsible Steering Column.

2) New Set of Engines; Common-Rail Diesel & Hi-Tech Petrol engines.

3) Up to date long list of Hi-Tech features inside(w/o their Stickers pasted outside like of Power Steering, etc as before) with their Long list Starting from Power Windows to Airbags, etc.

& This Never Ending list seems to be Non-Feasible considering HM's now, Instead 'Altered Chinese fit'(any China based car) seems to be the Easiest solution for HM, like as Premier have gone with Rio & Force India's upcoming Monster SUV.

For Taxi-Market & others its Classic & Avigo versions can do the job Comfortably with l'll bit Tweaks.

I came across this article today in Times Of India

It seems a lot of varients are coming out in the next year or so!!! I read somewhere else that they will be creating a car for a niche market also. I am wondering what would it be - Ambassador as a SUV? or a mini cooper?

They have just Rs 40 crores of liquid cash that has been got by selling surplus land in Uttarpara. I am not sure what model they will launch with this paltry amount.

The Indica took Rs 1800 crores to develop in 1998-99 and that was cheap by global standards.

With the hi tech competition that the new HM model may have to face the talk of a new model is quite tall by today's standards.

More than a decade back HM had launched the new mini bus Oka.The HM Oka saga is now history. It launched this mini bus importing

outdated, boxy body jigs, tools and dies from Austrailia and fitted the

Isuzu drive train and the 2000 DSL engine. Just a few thousand were

sold and the thing is now history.

HM should now use the Rs 40 crores very judiciously or else it may be the end of the road !

It is surprising to know that Amby is not a car people hated, but the company itself killed it- I was just wondering how cool it would be if Amby comes out as a Taxi- I've personally had enough with an Indica, congested, smelly, but would prefer an Amby Taxi that is nice and spacious.....

The whole issue revolves around `NICE'.

What is nice today to HM is, in fact, history for most of us.

Whether HM can really be nice to give what we think is `a nice car' today ?
