My first love: My Sierra: My beauty

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,
I got my sierra in april 1994, that day is still fresh in my mind. I got it from Autoriders Bombay goregoan. Now its shut down. Got it for 5.2 lacs
Mine was Non turbo as Turbo option was launched only in 1996. It came in German red colour with a pajero style Black Crash guard. Wow it looked awesomesmiley2.gif.

The minute i sat in the drivers seat i felt like I'M THE KING OF THE ROADsmiley2.gif.
It looked breath taking. I've had it now for 16 years. I've driven it frugally around just 85000kms single driven. Its lost its initial charm but definitely not its sex appealsmiley27.gif. Man it still gets u a second look at very signal.

Now i've shifted base to bangalore/ kerala but man not my sierra. It stil stays close to my heart. I don't drive it much as its a bit slow.

I drive around 100 km a day, a lot of highway driving, so usually drive very fast so usually use my other car but sierra is definitely good in the cities. Nobody will dare to cut you. Its awesome

I'm a very practical person. I don't believe in spending unnecessarily. My car just has a Cd/ Mp3 player,Normal Bridgestone tyres, no alloys,

Just spend to keep it alive.

NOW MOST IMPORTANT PART : WilL i honestly recommend anyone to buy it? NO

i'll tell you just why:
Tata after sales is one of the worst services center. Absolutely horrible. Local garages don't charge u much , but on the sad part, work isn't tat reliable.
Car is good for once in a week drive or two or jusfor short drives, but don't be shocked if u have a problem once too often

common problems:
1. low power. Not good for high terrain, or driving on ghats. Engine heats up even wit coolant
2. bad gear box. Not smooth. You've got to be strong to shift gears
3. electrics are worst part. Ive had so much prob wit my power window finally got them removed Use manual ones now.
4.Something or other leaks.
5.power steering is good but needs to be checked regularly.

I've had my car for 16 years somply love it. No matter what.

I know it like the back of my hand

But u need to spend, attleast 10 k a year to maintain it.

its not easy to part with, your heart wont let u. So it slowly drains ur pocket.

in these 16 years:
1. Got gear box work done once.
2.engine work once.
3.all tyres changed twice.
4.suspension done thrice

5. Power steering done once

But i still love it. I took it on my honeymoon also. My wife is still jealous of my beauty. If god willing will take it on my anniversary as well.

Now the Pros:
1. Its really strong. You will still live even if u have an accident. Trust me. I've hit a jersey cow. It bounced on my bonnet, kissed mywindshield. Mywindshiled survived,so did i. And thank god even the cow smiley1.gif

ANY OTHER CAR, I WOULD HAVE BEEN HISTORY.
2.killer looks. It still has its sex appeal intact.
3.great space inside

Why would i not recommend it even thou i love it so much:
1.Not reliable. You got to be prepared for anythg. I've had my car breakdown even on way back from the garage. I've done a lot of really long drives, but no its not recommended. If anything goes wrong. Trust me you'll get stuck for long
2.Be prepared to spend atleast 10 k a year no matter wat the sales man/ garage guy tells u.
3.You've to give time for it atleast once a week check. Itsnot practical if you are really busy
4.Not recommended if its your only vehicle or 1st buy

My review is totally unbiased.

I've driven my sierra for 16 yrs and will continue to do till god wishes. It has saved my life on number of occassion and i will never part with it. Its a part of me after all its my 1st love. Its my beauty

i hope my article helps anybody in making a decision.

Happy driving

Even I love this car.

I love the rear windows and the 2 door body style.

Looks insanely macho.

But would I buy it?

Hell, no.

I know the upkeep problems.

Though if I get one for dirt-cheap, I may well consider buying it.

The Sierra was Really a Hot Chic-like when it was launched, just loved its Styling & Imposing Stance.

Even my cousin have kept it for 2-3 years & I just love the Outside Landscape view from her Rear Seat through her Fixed Side Glasses.

Also I especially liked her Twin Wipers on Rear Tail-Glass in a Turbo-model.

Nice review of sierra

Memories in my mind refreshed, when TATA has launched 1948 CC idi engines. Anything to say further will be repetition of your words.

But when matter comes to TATA SIERRA, FORD ESCORT & MAHINDRA CL 550, I cannot stop myself to talk as these three are my dream cars.

@alok all sierras lack power, & were unsuitable for high terrain driving. That is why TURBO VERSION was launched. I got my car while i was in school. Learnt driving in it in bombay. i drive more than 100 kms daily so defi not reliable. For a small weekly drive to the market its great. You can stuff even an entire cow in itsmiley20.gif

hey, nice review there of your love aka Sierra.

it's great to see that you have not parted with it for such a long time, maintaining it, running it, and will keep it further.

TATA, as a company has moved on from the time of old Sumo/Sierra/safari days to old Indica to new Vista/manza/Safari. They are improving rapidly with each of their offering, which is also very warm and pleasant to see.

Welcome to the forum Doc, and impressive write up. As a baby, or shall I say, a 2-year old, the Sierra was very popular as I toy car, and everytime I would see one on the road, I would get real happy and excited. I had this little red Sierra that was my favourite toy.

Please post pictures. And do not miss the power windows switches as I have no idea about how they look in the sierra.

i tried downloading the pics but failed. i went to the icon of insert image but couldn't do it.

And @ arkboy. The power window was a real pain. My finger got Stuck in the window glass once at the Vile parle railway gate. imagine my condition. I was crying in pain and that too at the railway gate.I almost thought of breaking the glass. After 5 minutes, glass came down. My 3rd right finger is still flat due to that.

I had losts of problems with the Rt sided power window ultimately had it removed 2 years back. The switches were either side on the hand brake console. Some of the turbo models had them on the Drivers door.

The car is in bangalore now. When i visit bangalore again, I'll definitely get u some nice pics.

@alok. Reliablity issues have been there since the begining. We had a Tata Estate in the family with the similar engine in question.

Beleive me, handling and driving that huge vehicle was wonderful. Parking it was easy....because the view all around was stupenduos. I had already bought a Honda City 2004 model by then, but reversing that bigger vehicle was much fun because of the visibility.

It had everything factory fitted as any modern car, so as to say, power windows, brakes, steering. Company fitted AC and music system.

It had space that one could pack around eleven indivuals(over short distances) on the seats and the boot.

Built was solid so it always found the right of the way.

Problems were as already brought out in the forum. Overheating always irked me which was more so in the summers when one would switch on the AC.

i overhauled my engine at 78000kms mainly because on one of my trips the pipe from the power brake to the engine burst. The engine overheated by the time the sign appeared on the icon, it was too late. i had a terrible time. Some how got back, but then i had get it overhauled

Hi gegonbones-somehow I missed this thread. Its nice to know that you love your Sierra so much. No doubt it was a great machine of its times.Yours is a 1994 model but I have heard that the earliest ones of 1991 were still more problematic. This was introduced just after the Tatamobile and prior to the Estate by Tata.

About the electrics, I remember having read about Mr Balasaheb Thackerey having gone to Alibag dist. for a public meet on a Sierra when then electricals conked off.Nothing would work and the glasses had to be broken for his exit.

@bones - sierra was lovely vehicle - ahead of its time marred by immature market ,lack of build quality and sold by a company which was taking its formative steps into a  new market. It was a sort of first crossover in India ( it had ladder frame chassis - not true crossover)

Its heartening to see a sierra lover - please do good care of her.

regards.- spock

I was awestruck by the Sierra and the Estate, when they were introduced, at that time I was driving a Sipani D-1 diesel; no wonder. It was the nascent offerings of a 'truck' maker in the passenger car segment. Tata Motor's has come a long way since then; and has also some greater distance to go before it catches up with the mainstream.

@gegonbones - How about bringing your Tata Sierra to 21st century with some wheeler dealer treatment. It looks too bland at present but well maintained specimen

My suggestions include -

-The metallic Silver or dark green paint scheme for vehicle

-New clear  Headlamps, side mouldings and grille from Tata TL pick up truck( see image below)

tatapickup.jpg

- new bull bar with , clear headlamps for rear tail cluster with new rear bumper having Sierra turbo's integrated light section

- rear was wiper if not present

- leather interor tri forming with faux wood finish for door pads , central console

- a snorkel

- extra headlamps in the grlle

- A set alloy wheels

and lastly , if possible a new turobocharged Diesel engine from Tata Safari or even MSIL DDIS

VOLLA we have 21st century Tata Sierra.OOPs I have said too much

Before I end this post I will take liberty of Posting Photos you were not able to post in Your post - Hope You don't Mind!

Thanks a lot Sid for posting those pics, I tried a lot but in vain.

I think we got to have simple uploader for our pics out here. I find this imageshack thing a bit complicated.

Coming back to my Beauty, I want to retain it in its originality as far as possible.

I had enquired about the Tata Dicor engine, but its a tedious job, the gear box also needs to be changed.

DDIS, wow it will be great, but again lots of work.

I have a budget of 10k/ year maximum 15k for my beauty, that includes insurance as well. So just cant afford to go over board.

Got my Beauty serviced at Ram Cool Cars at banergatta, bangalore last time. They did a pretty good job, it seems there is little leak from the gear box, for which overhauling is required, plan to do it later this year, when I'm free. Also there is a lot of play in the steering. Nobody but only myself can engage the reverse gear, even the garage guys had a problem.

I want to get it painted, but nothing fancy. I'll stick with my german red. Searching for a proper place to get job done. I don't want paint bubbling up in a year or two.

Any good places in bangalore??

gego&bones can simply admire your commitment towards your old Sierra.I believe for painting why not check out your local Tata dealer? I believe the newer Tata Vista and Nano also use the same German Red shade that also came in older Estates. If  The dealer has a dust proof paint booth , the results will be excellent though a bit costlier.
