2011 Safari replacement - Tata Merlin

Recommended Posts

2011 Safari replacement is called the Tata Merlin the code name for the same is Safari18. It has something to do with the fact that it had to be developed in 18 months.

What is known as per source till now is that the AC is better than the safari and it has better interiors and plastic quality and has a more comfortable ride quality. It will feature the same Aria rims.

New safari seems to have a similar profile and dimensions as the old, at least on the exteriors.

The front looks clean, neat & non-pretentious, heavily inspired by the big brother, the Range Rover. Its got HID Xenon head lamps.

TATA Safari Merlin has a pretty squarish looks with a flattened bonnet. The head lights also are square but are projector type. If you increase brightness & reduce contrast you will note that the bumper is all new with a smaller air dam.

Also the side profile seems to have a different panel but there is no change in the A pillar.

But the picture shows a change in the dashboard. So expect a more upmarket and well put-together dash with Integrated with a integrated Music player and in-built Sat-Nav system.

Here're the pics of the Recently spied Tata Safari Merlin by Motoroids guys.

But this it's seen with very Minimal Coverings & mostly all of the External & few Internal details are also visible in the pics.

1) Old version derived Squarish & bit Taut body look with LR inspired Squarish Head-lamps & Grille.

Fog lamps are also All-New with Circular & Chrome Ring design.

3) Rear is also Mostly Re-designed with All-New Tail-Gate with Re-designed Tail-Gate glass(for better Rear visibility), Missing Spare wheel(which might've been moved under the body or in the Boot), New Bumper &

& Re-designed Squarish Tail-lamps in coherence with the Body design,

But seems to be well Integrated too.

On the Whole, Seems that Tata haven't adopted the New Platform for it yet(& is actually a good thing to Save costs) but they Might've worked seriously with the Ladder Chassis materials, configuration, Bodyshell characterstics, Suspension, Engine, Gearbox, etc.

Lets see...

@mods: Due to the thread topic demands I've posted these pics & posted them in Regular size because Imageshack site isn't working at that time, so posted directly. If you still think these pics Inappropriate in any ways then please act as needed. Thanks

why cant tata have better front facing third row instead of side facing, also with these spy shots, they are taking best looking decade old SUV to look worst today.

Hope quality is improved then what they offered till now.

Any more details regarding changes in its specs, i know its still the same 2.2Dicor engine but any more tuning in current power plant?

The vehicle has the same old body but there seems that the rugged old body has been retained as there is no change in the doors and pillars. What has changed is the front and rear ends and they give the vehicle a character. Front end is OK but the rear end has been drastically modified giving a green house effect. The rear step on the bumper is showing up. The front grill should have been the protruding type like in the Fortuner/ Land cruiser would have given it much better character.

What is disappointing is the Door handles. They have been retained from the old type. The should have been replaced with the ones on Manza/Aria. Also the wheel arches size has been reduced to give it a better fit where the old one seems fall off frequently. It fell of many times on our Safari.

The dash appears all new and the outline is really appealing than the old one. But the music system seems to be a single din, might be this is a basic version and so.

Third row doesn't seem to be front facing but the seats are widened, might be to fit 4 in the rear making it a 9 seater?

Over all well done package. Hope TATA prices it a bit lower than the current Safari to create a segment for the lower end 4X2 Aria. May be it'll not get all the features of the Aria as they'll be kept reserved for the higher end Safari above the Aria priced 18-20L new SUV based on the X2 platform.

This car still misses the Front facing 3rd row' date=' which is now a mandate.[/quote']

Obviously dude..

Due to limited Internal space It can't accomodate Front facing Rear Bench seat, If that can be done anyhow, then it'll lead to Zero Boot space.

& for it alot of other factors need to be taken care of like space for Jump seat in the 2nd Row & proper way for Ingress-Egress of 3rd Row passengers, Plumbing for 3rd Row of AC-Vents, etc.

I don't think so..

Proper sized 4-adults accomodation at the Safari's 3rd Row Jump Seats is an Impossible task.

& IMO, there's a different Tax structure for vehicles carriying 9 or more passengers.

Was expecting a 3.0VTT or better a V6 option. Is the power output the same or has it been increased ?

As reported by Motoroids,"Sources close to Tata are now confirming that a 3.0-litre diesel is indeed being tested on the Safari Merlin but the results aren

May be 3.0VTT will feature in the 20L SUV coming soon in 2011-12.

Now, talking about the power output, I too expect that TML will boost it up till atleast 160BHP. That will give the engine a punch as the ARIA, though lighter than Safari, and better than the INNOVA's pulling capabilities, has been mentioned to be still sluggush.

Excerpts from the Motoroids article:

The list of creature comforts will be similar to the Tata Aria, but we

are being told that a few more features are being considered to make

sure the Safari Merlin will have enough firepower to take on Mahindra

But one thing I am happy is they are testing a V6 petrol engine.

That is a must if TATA wants to get on to the international arena.

Reason...Take most of the markets, be it Middle East, Europe, Russian countries or the most competitive American markets, they require a petrol and a Automatic gearbox for their cars.

If TATA can sucessfully pull of this engine in 2.5 or 3 liter engine developing about 200-220 BHP then they can think of cracking these markets.

Can anyone get the daylight pics please!

Not possible still, as these shots are mere Spy shots only taken in Night.

Might be Tata tests her only in the Dark like ABs 'SHEHNSHAH'.

Wait for more spy shots taken in Daylight.
