The Supreme Court of India, on May 8, 2008 had passed a ruling, asking all the states to implement High Security registration Plates (HSRPs). However, as you would imagine, nothing ever happened. Now the Supreme court has slapped contempt of court notices to the transport secretaries of Delhi, UP and Punjab for non-compliance.

What this means is, that these states will now have to implement the HSRPs as soon as possible. The ruling doesn

I think there is a thread dealing with it somewhere.

HSRP started in the NDA days, Goa tried and then withdrew. This is VERY OLD news.

Do not use large fonts. You can get HSRP type plates (for legal reasons called Smart Plates) from Utsav (see my thread on Alabaster Civic for pics). About Rs.1150 for the pair.

I think we are getting it on ourselves. A very large number of plates in use do not meet the law. The only city with a modicum of law enfordcement is Delhi (I hope it still is).

I think it is something like 65mm numeral/letter size, min. thickness 10mm, Black on white.

IND is the international symbol for India, and hologram is a security feature. Take a look at the link I have given. I think if we specify some ISS which has to be met by all plates, and be strict about it then it should do.

Almost all Govt vehicles in UP have illegal plates, Devanagri letters and numbers, (incl Uttar Pradesh for UP) a big govt logo in the middle, etc. The law only allows for Roman Numerals and letters. Mah. govt tried four times with the high court and were rebuffed every time.

Standardized plates are the norm in Western countries and even in China.  TRE equipment (tag recognition equiment) allows for automobile tracking and recognition at toll booths, city stop lights, speed traps and generally anywhere the authorities wish it to be, such as a mobile unit in police cars.  Combined with FRE (facial recognition equipment) it provides for unparalled vehicle control.  But hey!  that's not all.  In China they are fastened on with special screws and caps.  When the police stop you, they check the fasteners and if they have been tampered with, you might be standing roadside while your ride is towed away.

I heard that a couple of ex-IITD chaps even managed to automatically detect over 95% of the current plates. The system is probably in use at IITD. I have HSRP type plates on by Civic.

Also, hopefully these, if and when they come will get rid of the local language pain. At the moment Meghalaya has them mandatory on new cars - they have found a goo way to avoid the RTO menace. You will not get your registration papers until you provide a receipt from Shimnit Utsch (the concessionaires). As per the current law all fixation has to be by the RTO!

Saw in the papers today, that even Ulta Pradesh is likely to finalise details of the contract in the first week of next month. Fingers (and toes) crossed. Now what happens to all the sarkari White Marias with numbers in Devanagri (illegal of course).
