How do I measure the mileage accurately

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a polo 1.2 petrol and I am a bit disappointed with the mileage that it is providing. Its not crossing 10Kms/Lt in the city no matter how i drive. I don't seem to find a way to measure the mileage accurately. Can anybody help me with this.

Don't worry what ever "accurate" mileage measurement you do, it's not going to increase much. Do a tankful to tankful reading and after running in the car it may increase by say 2 kms/lit max. If you want mileage go for a Maruti tin can, not a German tank.

I know that measuring the mileage will not increase the mileage. I just wanted to know that I am measuring it correctly.

Maruti cars have good fuel economy, but Polo cant be that bad. Infact, I received  almost 13Kms/ltr  in the beginning. But, later it decreased. So, I am wondering whats wrong.

[/quote'] As DD told you, it can accurately checked only with tankful to tankful method.

Here is the fuel efficiency of my polo tested by tankful method for 390 kms. with driving condition:

Total Kms. 390 Fuel consumed 26.75 ltr. FE- 14.57 kmpl with all the time AC ON

186 kms   Expressway 80-100 kmph
53 kms Ghat section going up 2nd, 3rd gear 20-30 kmph
33 kms Ghat section going down 5th gear 50-70 kmph
54 kms Extreme Ghat section 1,2,3rd gear 20-30 kmph
64 kms City driving in mumbai with medium trafic and B2B trafic and inside mahabaleshwar city at 30-40kmph speed.

Please check :  Frequent use of clutch , high RPM in lower gears, too much breaking.

Next week again going for a 450 kms trip. Will update about FE. This time i expect more as my car crossed 1000 km mark.

Thanks for the cool break-up.

I have been driving for almost 10 years and I doubt i use the clutch or the breaks too much. I don't drive very fast also. May be I have to check the mileage after filling up the tank as you guys are saying.

Polo 1.2 petrol is reported to deliver as VW promised i.e: In around 15-17kmpl for sedate Highway driving style.

If it's below 12kmpl then under any conditions then checkup you Calculation method first then Driving style & then atlast go to VW Service centre.
