P_One
cars like the 500, or for that matter the Mini, are for a discerning market, where style and individuality are important. in india, buyers are still more concerned with "mileage" and of course, price point. and trust me on this, if maruti were to improve the quality of the swift, give it a better (more powerful?) motor, and pass the cost on to the consumer, saled would dip. the reason it has sold so well is because maruti has cut corners to save costs. as a "premium hatch" the Getz is still a better-built proposition, i dare say, but what numbers has it done? however, what i am waiting to see is the way the market reacts to the fabia and punto, both "premium hatches" which will be more expensive that what indians are used to paying for a car with a boot. autowoman
Agree with P one general Indian automobile buyer has a long long way to go before he would value a 500......even if it came would be niche to car crazy people like us and how many of us could afford it:)

cavallino
This is a response to P_one, This sounds like a crazy idea, but I think I know a way premium hatches like the FIAT 500 could find some customers in India. I think the tourism industry is the market for the manufacturers to target. Rather than have a fleet of Mercs or Bentleys that would have limited range (and which the hotels would find hard to buy and maintain too) why not keep a fleet of Minis or 500s in which to zip their customers around town? Crazy idea, but I think that would be a good way for: 1) Hatches like these to get to India in the first place 2) The manufacturers to get sufficient feedback on how to modify the cars for Indian conditions and ultimately prepare a range for the well-heeled youngsters who will ultimately drive them. motorjedi
Excellent point, cavallino, but Im guessing that for every 500 a hotel buys, theyll have to buy an Omni to follow behind with the concerned guests luggage. But awesome for sightseeing and what not (without their luggage).
anjan_c2007
Fiat 500 is extremely good for the Europeans. But here its a small car costing Rs 12 lakhs plus with duties. The same goes for the Merc A Class, Rover Mini, Smart and the New Beetle. All these cars are very popular in Europe-these are small but great cars. You can sight them on the streets in Germany, Switzerland, U K, Netherlands and in many more countries .The Fiat 500 will also fall in this category- its damn cute.
