discontinued cars....

Recommended Posts

opel astra, ford escort and daewoo cielo... once considered as fierce competiors and kings of entry level luxury cars. cielo was the first one to phase out after the demise of daewoo. astra hold on for quite long and outsold the escort, but had to be taken off shelves due to the poor reputation of the opel brand and stiff competition from honda city.

which is your choice of the three?

i used to own a opel astra and i loved it just because of its terrific ride quality and good interiors with amazing features (in that period), but it was a pain to drive.... whereas the escort was great to drive... dint get a chance to drive the cielo though...

All these fetch something below a lakh rupees in the second hand market. The Opel Corsa fetches something between 1.5 to 2 lakhs.TV serial wallahs use these to show rich men on the move. Film makers prefer to get 'car crash' and 'car on flame' scenes with these cars. the Contessas, 118NE's, Standard 2000's also suffered a similar deposed image after their downfall.

I had a 99 cielo (cielo executive)...It was a great car and it gave me around 10-11km/l avg.

Opel.....no idea.........

Have a 97 ford escort diesel, bought for 74,000 1 year back and it is doing well........but very sluggish......but fine for the price.....great mileage too.....

the astra used to give 8-9 kmpl in mumbai city with a/c... i still have the 2003 model astra club in my native and its running fine and infact giving higher mileage..!! astra used to offers features like trip computer, sunroof, standard leather seats, alloys, spoiler, 2 tone paint, cooled glove box, etc unheard in this segment, of course in that period.

no car in that segment still has the build quality and ride comfort of a corsa. i remember reading somewhere that in any car the balance between handling and ride must be perfect. only few companies like opel and benz manage to do so. hondas, BMWs, audi gives preference to handling over ride which is not a priority in india.

I remember when opel had packed baggage a month ago the Corsa was offered with free 3 years insurance ,music sustem and additional cash discount of 60k. My uncle bought it and sold it after 2 years and guess what he got a lot out of this deal .He didnot wanted to sell it but did because the car depretiated rapidly.

I have a Cielo Executive 99' and drive it daily, the ride quality is good and also the handling and gives a decent fuel economy of 11-12 kmpl, am not sure about escort, but drove an astra and found it to be pretty powerful and fun to drive but ride was a bit rough.

but whats the use, maintainence costs were sky high
