2013-Skoda-Rapid-digital-image.jpgpost-7682-0-72788500-1351747869_thumb.jppost-7682-0-09876700-1351747897_thumb.jpSkoda has flown a bunch of journalists to Portugal and handed them camouflaged test vehicles of the next generation Skoda Octavia for a preview drive.

Members Auto.cz were in that group and they’ve returned with a rich purchase of photographs and specifications. Auto.cz were shown the car without masking but were not allowed to click photographs. But when the journalists were flipping through the infotainment system of the smartly cloaked test mules which they drove up to a top speed of 170kph, they came across this digital image of the car, that gives away its side profile.

The new Octavia is based on the MQB Platform. When Skoda introduces this model in India, hopefully next year, it’ll also launch the MQB Platform in India which will underpin 40 models from the VW Group till about 2018.

The new Octavia is just weeks away from its public unveil.

Features and thrills in the 2013 Skoda Octavia

  • It has a 590L boot, just 5L short of the Superb’s, and is a massive 4.65m long.
  • The wheelbase is stretched by a significant 10.8 cm compared to the outgoing model, improving space at the rear.
  • Turbocharged petrol engines displace 1.2-, 1.4- and 1.8 liters, while the two diesel motors displace 1.6L and 2.0L. Their outputs extend from 84hp to 177hp and each engine has lower fuel consumption.
  • There’s a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DSG based on the variant you choose.
  • Some of the features summarized in this preview drive report are 17-inch wheels, driver fatigue detection system, steering mounted controls and 3D color graphics on the LCD infotainment system.
  • A lot of inspiration and soft components have come from the European Rapid. Check the steering wheel, central console and the doors to find traces of the Rapid’s parts inventory.
  • The new Octavia will reach the Czech market (home market) by February 2013 and Skoda hopes to make it one of the top 10 best sellers in the world one day soon.

Can the new Laura pull a fast one on the Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra by playing the value card?

Fantastic !!! This surely will set the benchmark yet again (especially if the " octavia " badge is reborn)

PS - The Gear knob just looks so tempting to operate

^ IMO Skoda's gearshifts are the most precise, slick in the business ( Had owned a Laura L&K M/T for 1.13Lakh Kms - 4yrz )

I have to admit its an awesome car. The car looks amazing and judging by the engine/gearbox options, we can expect a lot variants from Skoda ranging from Active to Ambiente or even an L&K edition. The interiors has an air of BMW to it, especially the aircon vents and dashboard lines. This will surely be a benchmark and will sell well even it costs a few bucks extra. Am watching this space keenly.

All new third generation Skoda Octavia sedan is finally revealed. The 2013 Skoda Octavia is scheduled for an official unveiling during the first week of December this year, but thanks to journalists at WhatCar?, who were invited to test drive the new Octavia in Portugal, details on the new Skoda sedan, are no longer a mystery. Production of the new Octavia has commenced and Skoda will launch their new Octavia by end of January 2013.

According to the journalists, 2013 Skoda Octavia is a great car with moderate reforms. It is built on the new MQB platform from Volkswagen. MQB stands for Modularer Querbaukasten in German, which in English translates to Modular Transverse Matrix. Audi A3 and the new VW Golf are also built on the MQB platform. Thanks to this new platform, the car with already big inside space, has even more space to offer.

Front look of the new new Skoda Octavia resembles the new European Rapid sedan, which is placed in a segment below the Octavia. But with modern technologies like adaptive cruise control, active bonnet to protect pedestrians, etc on offer, new Octavia will easily compete with models which are placed in a segment above itself. New front LED lights give the 2013 Octavia a sportier look. Rear visibility is poor, as it is with Octavia models.

Compared to the second gen Skoda Octavia, 2013 model is 10.8 cms longer, 100 kgs lighter and offers a bootspace of 590 liters (about 5 liters more). The wheelbase of this five door liftback is 9 cms longer. It has a total length of 4659 mm, Skoda Superb length is at 4838 mm. Drivability has been improved, not much significant change is made to one of the largest sedan in its class.

2013 Skoda Octavia will be offered in both petrol and diesel engines. In petrol, you will have the 1.4L TSI with cylinder deactivation for better fuel efficiency. A 1.8L supercharged generating 180 hp with seven speed DSG dual-clutch will also be offered along with a RS model. In the diesel, 2013 Skoda Octavia will get a 2.0L turbo generating 148 hp with six speed DSG. 2013 Skoda Octavia RS will be revealed next year. The journalists who test drove the new Octavia, say that the engines are powerful and smooth.

Materials inside the Octavia 2013 are best in class. They are easy to use and understand. Steering stiffness and acceleration response differs with class. Gear shifting lever is similar to the one in European Rapid. The journalists added that the steering gets a slight numbness when driving in the sport mode. All Octavia 2013 variants will offer color touchscreens, while park assist is something which will not be offered on all variants. You also have enough legroom and headroom in the new Skoda sedan, which is believed to redefine the segment.

Skoda Boss, Winfried Vahland, is very hopeful with their new Octavia. He expects the 2013 Octavia to feature in the top ten best selling cars list. As far as price of the new Skoda Octavia is concerned, nothing has been revealed. But looking at the features and improvements, it will be expensive than the outgoing variant.

The VAG is concerned that the high price and premium positioning of budget brand Skoda in India is eating away VW's sales, so we can expect Skoda prices to be brought down to Hyundai/Renault/Nissan level in some time. That would make more sense.

It's like sibling rivalry, both VW & Skoda are fighting against each other, as globally VW is main-stream brand & skoda is their VFM sub brand! But in India Skoda was introduced earlier & with it's german bits, it conqured luxury badge & our hearts; Now VW management wants to grab all that goodwill & skoda doesn't want to loose what they have earned with huge efforts & that's why they are comming in each-others way!
