With skyrocketing petrol prices and still on the low side diesel prices combined with the high performance of diesel powered cars the Indian car industry is seeing a shift from petrol to diesel. This is quite recent and no one knows how long it will take to become a paradigm shift. Yet Diesel cars are a hot topic to ponder upon.

A flurry of diesel sedans has been brought into the market by almost all the major car makers of India. Talk of Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Chevy or Hyundai, everyone is eyeing the segment. Today we would discuss the segment of sedans below the 7 lacs price range.

1. Honda Amaze : Within first few weeks of the launch, Honda Amaze has set achieved sparkling results for the company, first the pre-launch booking showed the promotion of Honda worked for it, this time. The bookings of the car in the first 3 weeks, are overwhelming for the company and left the market leader and its closest rival Swift Dzire. The best-in-class power output and best-in-industry mileage figures, the Amaze is a well priced product and it costs even lesser to many premium hatches. The company has also delivered 4852 units in April, which helped the company record a growth of 20%.Honda Amaze was rolled out at an attractive price of Rs 4.99 lakh and 5.99 lakh in petrol and diesel versions respectively.

2. Maruti Swift Dzire : Maruti Swift Dzire has been the actual car that opened this segment in India and made the compact sedan, the buzz word. The engine is the new Maruti K_series engine, which has been one of the best engine innovations in the recent times. The brand image of Maruti, the marketing efforts and a decent product, have produced the desired result, making Swift Dzire the leader of the class.

3. Chevrolet Sail : Chevy has not made its grounds as far as India is concerned. Launched in February, 2013, the Sail was priced at Rs. 5,00,000 which has made the market look upto Sail and resulted in good number of advance bookings.Chevrolet Sail comes in both petrol and diesel engine options. A 1.2-litre, 84.8bhp mill powers the petrol version and a 1.3-litre, 76.9bhp diesel engine.

4. Toyota Etios : Toyota launched the Etios series in their new looks at a starting price of Rs. 4.45 lacs for the Liva series and 5.45 lacs fore the Etios respectively. The company has introduced quite a few changes. Changes to the exterior include a redesigned front grille with chrome finish, rear combination lamps with distinct fin pattern that gives it a sleek look, new indicators on side view mirrors and a newly introduced Classic Grey colour shade to add to the style quotient of the vehicles. The interiors are dual tone which gives a premium finish and comfortable seats with enough leg room and head space making the Etios a worthy opponent in the class.

5. Tata Indigo CS: The Indigo CS is a car that falls between a hatchback and a sedan. The mirrors have chrome strips that liven up their look. The profile is identical to the Indigo's, but differs from it when you reach the rear end. The tail-lamp of the car is redesigned and Tata was able to squeeze in a boot just under the regulation size of four metres to qualify for an excise cut and pass on the attractive price to the consumer. The diesel variant gives a fuel economy of 14 kmpl in the city and 19 kmpl on the highway. The car is a breeze to ride and it does justice to the price it is offered at. The price of the Indigo Cs begins at 4.4 lakh. The car is good value for money and the name of Tata adds trust to it.

The sedans in the compact sedan market are giving each other a tough competition and the customer has a plethora of available options. We just hope, that the best car ‘wins’.

Both Amaze and Dzire are right at the top.

Indians generally fall for a newer car first and herein lies an added advantage for Amaze.

Etios, though very capable is let down by its looks.

I dont like the other two.

Except Etios & SAIL sedan all these cars are hatchbacks in the terms of country tax regulations.

Hatchbacks are equally expensive to manufacture as sedan, but the extra boot section added in CS cars let companies to price these cars at a Premium & earn more profits. Customers also feel good by owing those vehicles as due to better image associated with them.

Amongst these all are good cars, depending upon their price all offers well in return be it a Indigo CS or Dzire or SAIL or Amaze.

I'd only rate ETIOS as an poorly designed, under performing & not-so-well deserving car with Un-car like feel.

If you would like to have CS sub 4m (Dzire/Amaze) then Amaze it is.

Otherwise in diesel sedans above 4m in C1 segment (Manza, Verito, Sail, Etios), Etios it is. Though you may not like the design but it's a hugely practical car with very low maintenance.

Very true. In fact thes days, why manufacturers are flooding market with CS version is because of profit margins better than hatch...also, if we take a look at Dzire and Swift sales figures than it would be more clear why Dzire is selling more than Swift.

Overall, I think Toyota would also be thinking to cut-short the Etios and make it CS.
